Caistor Canal photos from Chris Padley

Christopher Padley has kindly provided the following information and photos of the canal.

The locks on the canal all have names on the O.S, except the top one at Moortown which had already been demolished when the OS was made.

A photo of Moor Lock on the Caistor canal, the fifth one from the Ancholme. It was taken in April 2006 on the occassion of a visit by the industrial acrhaelogy group of the Society for Linconshire History and Archaeology.

Left: An old photograph of Mill Lock (fourth from Ancholme). You can see the watermill that was built over it after the canal was closed. The mill was built sometime in the 1870s and disused by the first world war. Mill Lock might be named after this mill, but there was an older windmill not far away overlooking the lock, and it is possible the name dates back to this earlier mill.

Above: This is Mill Lock again, taken on same visit as the one of Moor Lock. The old photo is looking east, but this is looking north from the east end. In other words from where the mill stood. As you can see, the mill has totally disappeared, but the original lock stonework is more or less intact, albeit it in rough condition.

Another photograph of MIll Lock on same day in April 2006.

An older photograph of MIll Lock taken from the west end in 1965.

A pretty spot just above Willow Lock, taken May 2006, with the may on the hawthorn, and a willow tree, appropriately.

Beck End Lock taken in 1965 from the towpath bridge.
