Monday 4th August 1997

From to Follyfoot Swing Bridge arriving at 6:30 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 1.5 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.46 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 327 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 547 locks, averaging 1.98 lock/miles per hour.

The rain stopped just before we met Eileen, Pat and Eve at the bus station. Set off up through the locks stopping 20 minutes at John Rennie for a pumpout (10). Moored before the bridge. A misty sun this evening.

Tuesday 5th August 1997

From Follyfoot Swing Bridge to Avoncliffe Aqueduct arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 7 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.91 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 331 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 547 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

Cruised to Avoncliffe, most of the way in the rain, and turned before the aqueduct but found the mooring that side very rocky and shallow, so we went backwards across the aqueduct and moored the other side. In this process we picked up a lot of rubbish on the prop. Had a very good lunch at the Cross Guns (22.90 for four adults plus Eve). Cleared the prop aftter lunch.

From Avoncliffe Aqueduct to Bathampton Bridge arriving at 5:35 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 6 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.76 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 334 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 547 locks, averaging 1.93 lock/miles per hour.

The weather was cloudy but dry for our trip back. We stopped 15 minutes at Dundas for water then went on to moorings just before the bridge. After dinner we went for a drink at the George.

Wednesday 6th August 1997

From Bathampton Bridge to Bath Old Bridge arriving at 11:20 am. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 2.5 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 337 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 553 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Came down through the locks and moored by the weir. After lunch we spent the afternoon in Bath. Had dinner on the boat. A cloudy, mostly dry day but a few showers in the middle of the day.

Thursday 7th August 1997

From Bath Old Bridge to Bath Old Bridge arriving at 82:0 pm. The time taken was 20 minutes. 0 miles and 0 locks, averaging 0 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 337 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 553 locks, averaging 1.93 lock/miles per hour.

After seeing Pat, Eileen and Eve off at the bus station we moved down to the moorings nearer Sainsbury's and did our weeks shopping. Rain in the morning soon cleared to give a dry day wit sunny intervals.

Friday 8th August 1997

From Bath Old Bridge to Murhill Quarry arriving at 1:55 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 25 minutes. 7.5 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.06 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 341 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 559 locks, averaging 1.93 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the Bath locks, stopping 30 minutes for water on the way and 10 minutes at John Rennie for diesel (136 litres 34). No moorings at Dudas so moored just before Murhill Wharf for lunch.

From Murhill Quarry to Bradford-on-Avon Lock No 14 arriving at 4:55 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 2.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.43 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 343 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 559 locks, averaging 1.92 lock/miles per hour.

Went through the lock with Louisa and went on to the moorings near the Beehive. Had dinner at the Gongoozoler (Mussels 5.95, cod 4.95). A hot sunny day.

Saturday 9th August 1997

From Bradford-on-Avon Lock No 14 to Seend Bottom Lock No 17 arriving at 12:10 am. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 7 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.53 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 346 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 562 locks, averaging 1.91 lock/miles per hour.

Came up Semmington locks followed by Fear Naught and another boat. The Wilts & Berks Amenity Group were having a rally at the locks. Stopped for lunch after Seend Park swing bridge.

From Seend Bottom Lock No 17 to Devizes Bottom Lock No 22 arriving at 3:15 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 3 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.17 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 348 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 567 locks, averaging 1.91 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the Seend flight by ourselves. Stopped for water (very slow tap - took about 45 minutes) at the bottom lock then moved cross to moor next to Ena May. A hazy morning but a very hot and sunny afternoon.

Sunday 10th August 1997

From Devizes Bottom Lock No 22 to Devizes Top Lock No 50 arriving at 1:30 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 40 minutes. 2 miles and 28 locks, averaging 6.43 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 353 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 595 locks, averaging 1.97 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the locks with Albion, breasted up for nearly all of the locks. At the top moored at the wharf and went to lunch at the Bear Hotel (3 courses and coffee 10.95 each). After lunch went shopping at Somerfield. A hot sunny day.

Monday 11th August 1997

From Devizes Top Lock No 50 to Honey Street Wharf arriving at 12:00 am. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 8 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.84 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 356 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 596 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

Moored for lunch at the Barge (Ham & Cheese and Sausage & Onion Baguettes 3.95 each).

From Honey Street Wharf to Wootton Bottom Lock No 51 arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 7 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.21 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 359 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 596 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for 15 minutes for water and ice cream at Pewsey Wharf the carried on to the bottom of the locks. A warm day, mostly cloudy but with some sunny intervals.

Wednesday 13th August 1997

From Wootton Bottom Lock No 51 to Great Bedwyn Church Lock No 64 arriving at 8:20 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 30 minutes. 5.62 miles and 13 locks, averaging 3.39 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 364 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 609 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

After spending almost two days waiting for Tranquil Rose, the wide hotel boat stuck on the summit, we were allowed through the locks with Touslehead. The water levels were better than on the waay down. Moored above the lock and went to the Three Tuns for dinner (Gammon steak 6.95 each). A fine day of sunshine and cloud.

Thursday 14th August 1997

From Great Bedwyn Church Lock No 64 to Hungerford Lock No 74 arriving at 3:35 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 15 minutes. 5.25 miles and 10 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 369 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 619 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

Went through the locks with Mary, we couldn'tt find the water point at Great Bedwyn. Stopped in tthe lock queue at Hungerford at 12.50 but didn't get into the lock until almost 14.30, having had lunch in the meantime. Stopped for water (slow tap and low tank - 40 minutes). Moorred opposite the water point and went shopping at Somerfield. Had dinner at the Downgate (Lamb burger 5.50, Chicken Maregano 5.95). A wam sunny day.Hungerford Lock No 74:  - 15th August 1997.

Friday 15th August 1997

From Hungerford Lock No 74 to Kintbury Lock No 78 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 3 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 371 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 623 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

Took photos of Florian and Zavala coming through the lock, had a chat with the man on Kelper, then set off. Moored for lunch a little way before Vicarage bridge. Went round the village and took more pictures. A hot and sunny day.

Saturday 16th August 1997

From Kintbury Lock No 78 to Newbury Lock No 85 arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 6 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.55 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 374 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 630 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the locks with Elysian Fields and went down to the boat yard for water and a pump-out (10) then went back to the town moorings for the afternoon.

From Newbury Lock No 85 to Widmead Lock No 89 arriving at 6:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 25 minutes. 2.5 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.59 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 376 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 634 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

Thought better of stopping in Newbury town centre on a Saturday night so moved down to just below the lock to moor. Had to hack down the tall undergrowth to make a decent mooring. A hot and sunny day.

Sunday 17th August 1997

From Widmead Lock No 89 to Aldermaston Lock No 95 arriving at 2:10 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 15 minutes. 5.75 miles and 6 locks, averaging 2.76 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 380 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 640 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

Moored by Reading Marine for lunch etc. Did an oil and oil filter change. We had to move on as the boatyard were expecting some hire boats back.

From Aldermaston Lock No 95 to Padworth Lock No 96 arriving at 7:10 pm. The time taken was 35 minutes. 0.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.14 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 381 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 641 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just below Padworth Swing bridge, convienent for Aldermaston Station so I can get into Reading tomorrow to try to get my notebook PC fixed. A cloudy and warm day with some rain in the afternoon.

Monday 18th August 1997

From Padworth Lock No 96 to Tyle Mill Lock No 99 arriving at 3:15 pm. The time taken was 55 minutes. 2 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 381 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 643 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

An unsuccessful morning in Reading as far as getting the PC fixed is concerned, but saw the copy of the Bayeux tapestry in the museum. Set off after lunch but had to stop above the lock as the swing bridge below was jammmed. Two boats were in front of us and BW were in attendence. The bridge was fixed by 1605 and we got through and stopped at the water point below by 1625.

From Tyle Mill Lock No 99 to Burghfield Village Road Bridge arriving at 7:05 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 4.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.56 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 384 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 648 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Moored near Zavala and went to the Cunning Man for dinner, a Harvester resturant, not very good.

Tuesday 19th August 1997

From Burghfield Village Road Bridge to High Bridge, Reading arriving at 10:55 am. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 3.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.39 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 386 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 651 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Came through two locks with Frieslan, a 9 foot beam dutch barge from Newbury. Moored by the prison and went shopping at Sainsbury's.

Wednesday 20th August 1997

From High Bridge, Reading to Sonning Lock arriving at 11:40 am. The time taken was 1 hour 10 minutes. 2.37 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 387 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 653 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Blakes Lock and on to the Thames. Moored above the lock and had lunch at the Bull (Duck Cassoulet and Chicken Dijone 10.95 each). The river busy all afternoon with long queues waiting for the lock.

Thursday 21st August 1997

From Sonning Lock to Henley Bridge arriving at 11:05 am. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 6.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.52 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 390 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 655 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Started off at 7.50 and worked the lock manually, we were joined by three other narrowboats. Stopped above Shiplake Lock for water and pump-out (5), more queues so it took 50 minutes. When we got to Marsh Lock we were greeted by Simon, from September Dawn. Stopped for lunch and shopping (Waitrose) on the town moorings (no fee collected).

From Henley Bridge to Temple Island arriving at 3:10 pm. The time taken was 40 minutes. 1.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.06 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 390 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 655 locks, averaging 1.93 lock/miles per hour.

Moved down to our showground moorings and tied alongside King's Ransom. Angela due to arrive 22.03 tomorrow (Fri) and Rosemary 13.40 Saturday at Henley railway station.

Monday 25th August 1997

From Temple Island to Henley Bridge arriving at 12:05 am. The time taken was 30 minutes. 1.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.74 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 391 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 655 locks, averaging 1.93 lock/miles per hour.

A wet last day for the festival so we moved back to the town moorings and had a nice lunch at the Little White Hart (55 for the four of us, including wine, desserts and coffee).

Tuesday 26th August 1997

From Henley Bridge to Bourne End Railway Bridge arriving at 7:20 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 50 minutes. 11 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.1 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 396 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 659 locks, averaging 1.92 lock/miles per hour.

Saw Angela off at the station and then did more shopping at Waitrose with Rosemary. Set off after lunch (we were booked to go through Hambleton Lock at 15.30). There were queues at all the locks and no moorings available at Marlow. Moored at the wharf by the level crossing. Cloudy in the morning but sunny in the afternoon and evening.

Wednesday 27th August 1997

From Bourne End Railway Bridge to Windsor Railway Viaduct arriving at 1:05 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 15 minutes. 10.37 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.38 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 400 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 663 locks, averaging 1.91 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water above Cookham Lock (15 minutes) then went down to Windsor, the locks busy but not much queuing. Went round the castle in the afternoon (8.80 each) and in the evening had a good dinner at the Olde Hart Hotel. Cloudy with showers.

Thursday 28th August 1997

From Windsor Railway Viaduct to Penton Hook Lock arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 9.62 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 403 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 667 locks, averaging 1.9 lock/miles per hour.

Moored below the lock on Laleham visitor moorings for lunch.

From Penton Hook Lock to Hampton Court Bridge arriving at 6:30 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 40 minutes. 10.12 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.03 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 408 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 671 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at Shepperton Marina for fifty minutes for pump-out (5), diesel (26.40 for 110 litres) and Aquakem (an outrageous 7.26 for one litre). Moored on a difficult spot just below the trip boat moorings. Went out to a couple of pubs after dinner. A mixed day of cloud, sunshine and showers.

Friday 29th August 1997

From Hampton Court Bridge to Teddington Lock arriving at 10:00 am. The time taken was 55 minutes. 4.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 5.04 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 409 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 671 locks, averaging 1.88 lock/miles per hour.

Moored above the lock and spoke to the lock keeper who tells us its 12 o'clock for the run down to Limehouse. Did some shopping and set off for the lock at 11.50.

From Teddington Lock to Limehouse Basin arriving at 3:50 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 21.12 miles and 2 locks, averaging 5.78 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 413 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 673 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Had a good trip down the Thames for Rosemary's last full day with us. Moored in the basin and had dinner at the Barley Mow. A bright day of sunshine and cloud.Limehouse Basin: Entering the lock - 29th August 1997.

Sunday 31st August 1997

From Limehouse Basin to Tottenham Lock No 17 arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 6.87 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.35 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 415 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 677 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

After a day spent at Limehouse we went on up the lee and stopped for water and lunch below the lock. At 13.05 we set off into the lock but once the bottom gates were closed the lock stopped working (electical fault). We called BW and help arrived at 14.05.

From Tottenham Lock No 17 to Pickett's Lock No 15 arriving at 3:30 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 25 minutes. 3 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.53 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 417 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 679 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Moored above the lock, opposite the golf course. A cloudy day with sunny periods.
