Sunday 1th June 1997

From to Aldersley Junction arriving at 1:55 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 25 minutes. 8.37 miles and 21 locks, averaging 5.42 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 72 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 160 locks, averaging 3.58 lock/miles per hour.

Came back onto the BNC Main Line then down the Wolverhampton Flight. Moored just past the junction for lunch.

Came through the stop lock and up the canal to the Brewood visitor mooings. Saw Crates Castle moored. Had dinner at the Bridge Inn (Salmon and Prawn Bake 5.45 and Thai Corriander Chicken 5.75). A sunny day with a strong cool breeze.

Monday 2th June 1997

From Brewood Bridge No 14 to Cowley Tunnel No 33 arriving at 1:05 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 7.5 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 77 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 161 locks, averaging 3.37 lock/miles per hour.

Did some shopping in Brewood before setting off at 9.35am. Stopped for water and diesel (57.1 litres 9) at Wheaton Aston. Moored for lunch on the Gnosall visitor moorings.

From Cowley Tunnel No 33 to Goldstone Bridge No 55 arriving at 5:40 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 10.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.23 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 80 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 161 locks, averaging 3.24 lock/miles per hour.

Saw the third Jay I have seen this year, also a couple of broods of moorhen chicks. Saw Calm, a different boat butthe same name and owners. Moored opposite the Wharf Inn. A sunny and windy day with very light cloud.

Tuesday 3th June 1997

From Goldstone Bridge No 55 to Adderley Bottom Lock No 12 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 4 hours 5 minutes. 7.12 miles and 10 locks, averaging 4.19 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 84 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 171 locks, averaging 3.2 lock/miles per hour.

Met a lot boats coming up, as we went down, the Tyrley Locks then went on to follow Foxy Lady down the Aldderley flight. The man on Foxy Lady annoyed Beryl by leaving paddles up.

From Adderley Bottom Lock No 12 to Audlem Bottom Lock No 27 arriving at 5:05 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 3 miles and 15 locks, averaging 6.55 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 87 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 186 locks, averaging 3.27 lock/miles per hour.

Set off after lunch at 13.40 and came down the flight to the Shroppie Fly where we stopped for water. A Countrywide Cruisers narrowboat was filling up so we waited 20 minutes for them to finish, we didn't know there was anotherr tap below the lock, then another 20 minutes to fill up.Moored below the bottom lock andd had dinner. After dinner we had drinks at the pub.A mostly sunny day.

Wednesday 4th June 1997

From Audlem Bottom Lock No 27 to Nantwich Basin arriving at 11:50 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 5.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.44 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 89 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 188 locks, averaging 3.21 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just across the aquaduct and had lunch before going shopping at Safeway's. Rang Angela in the evening and she confirmed that she would join us on Friday. A misty start to the day gave way to sunshine.

Thursday 5th June 1997

From Nantwich Basin to Hurleston Junction arriving at 2:35 pm. The time taken was 55 minutes. 1.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.04 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 90 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 188 locks, averaging 3.18 lock/miles per hour.

Went to do more shopping at Safeway's before lunch. Afterwards we went down to the junction and turned to moor just beyond the bridge. Overnight rain gave a cloudy start to the day but we had some sunshine in the afternoon.

Friday 6th June 1997

From Hurleston Junction to Nantwich Basin arriving at 11:05 am. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 1.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 92 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 188 locks, averaging 3.13 lock/miles per hour.

Came back to Nantwich and filled with water then went on to turn the boat just past Marsh Lane Bridge. Washed the boat and polished the starboard side. Met Angela from the 16.55 train. A mostly warm and cloudy day with rain in the early evening.

Saturday 7th June 1997

From Nantwich Basin to Swanley Lock No 6 arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 4.37 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.29 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 94 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 194 locks, averaging 3.11 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping in Nantwich before setting off. Stopped above the lock for lunch.

From Swanley Lock No 6 to Willey Moor Lock No 12 arriving at 5:35 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 8.37 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.01 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 98 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 200 locks, averaging 3.06 lock/miles per hour.

Angela helped with the locks and Beryl took the boat throuh Wrenbury Lift Bridge and a couple of locks. Moored just below the lock. Had dinner in the pub (Gammon steak, Ratatouille, Vegetarian Lasangue 15.90). A cloudy day with sunny periods and a brisk wind.

Sunday 8th June 1997

From Willey Moor Lock No 12 to Prees Branch Junction arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 8.12 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.94 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 101 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 207 locks, averaging 3.01 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water, for 30 minutes, at the top of the Grindley Brook flight. Stopped for lunch between bridges 44 and 45. Angelaa helped with all the locks and we made good progress. Beryl aand Angela went to the shop at Grindley Brook.

From Prees Branch Junction to Frankton Junction arriving at 5:45 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 10 minutes. 10 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 106 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 207 locks, averaging 2.9 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just after the junction. Very good scenery all the way, the Welsh mountains sometimes visible in the distance. This side of Ellesmere some stretches of the towpath have been completely washed away but bank piling operations are in progress. A cooler day of cloud, sunshine and a few short showers.

Monday 9th June 1997

From Frankton Junction to Chirk Tunnel (North end) arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 7.37 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.09 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 110 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 208 locks, averaging 2.8 lock/miles per hour.

Crossed Chirk aaqueduct and struggled through the tunnel. Moored ffor lunch opposite the marina.

From Chirk Tunnel (North end) to Siambr Bridge No 45 arriving at 5:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 7.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 113 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 208 locks, averaging 2.72 lock/miles per hour.

Crossed Pontcysylte aqueduct and made slow progress up to Llangollen where we squeezed on the end of the row of moored boats. Had dinner at a pizza and pasta place in the town, a very nice meal (27.75 for the three of us, including drinks). Tuesday 10th June 1997

From Siambr Bridge No 45 to Chirk Aqueduct arriving at 7:05 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 5 minutes. 8.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 117 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 208 locks, averaging 2.62 lock/miles per hour.

Walked down to Sun Trevor to take pictures before breakfast. We all walked down to the Horseshoe Falls and then went into town for shopping and lunch at the Westyrn Arms(?) (Lamb chops for Beryl and me and Cheese Ploughman's 15.85). Set off at 2.30 to turn round but it took us 40 minutes to get back to the water point then 30 more to fill up. Cruised late and stopped at Monks bridge Chirk. The hotel boats Rose and Castle moored behind us. A cloudy but humid day.

Wednesday 11th June 1997

From Chirk Aqueduct to Ellesmere Branch Junction arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 5 minutes. 10.37 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.78 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 121 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 209 locks, averaging 2.54 lock/miles per hour.

A wet night and early morning but only the lightest of drizzel when we set off and the day soon became dry. Saw the hotel boats Hart and Hind. Stopped at the junction for lunch.

From Ellesmere Branch Junction to Platt Lane Bridge No 43 arriving at 5:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 8.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 124 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 209 locks, averaging 2.48 lock/miles per hour.

Saw the Lucidan Boat Co - the people we met at Doddington on the Nene. Moored at the bridge so we could have dinner at the Waggoners Inn (Ostirch steak 10.95,Gammon steak 5.50 and Cheese Omlette 3.95).

Thursday 12th June 1997

From Platt Lane Bridge No 43 to New Mills Lift Bridge No 31 arriving at 10:35 am. The time taken was 1 hour 40 minutes. 4 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 126 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 209 locks, averaging 2.45 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped a Viking Afloat for a pumpout (10) then went on to moor in the Whitchurch Arm. Went to the station with Angela and saw her on to the 12.16 train. Had lunch at thr Black Bear (Minty Lamb & Leek Pie 4.50 each) then did the shopping in Tesco's. I walked down to the locks in the Afternoon and saw Ena May again. Another wet night followed by a cloudy morning and a sunny afternoon.

Friday 13th June 1997

From New Mills Lift Bridge No 31 to Steer Bridge No 24 arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 4.5 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.91 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 128 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 218 locks, averaging 2.47 lock/miles per hour.

The lady from Guppy closed the lift bridge by the Whitchurch Arm for us. We have just enough room to get round the turn there. Stopped for water at the top of Grindey Brook Locks and spoke to the people on Albert (from the Gloucester & Sharpness), a new 50 foot boat. They are going up to the Leeds & Liverpool. It rained hard as we left Quoisley lock so we moored for lunch before we got to the bridge.

From Steer Bridge No 24 to Wrenbury Lift Bridge No 20 arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 25 minutes. 2.62 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.56 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 130 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 219 locks, averaging 2.45 lock/miles per hour.

Had a fairly wet trip down to Wrenbury and moored the other side of the lift bridge. A cloudy day with heavy showers in the afternoon.

Saturday 14th June 1997

From Wrenbury Lift Bridge No 20 to Nantwich Basin arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 8.12 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.78 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 133 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 228 locks, averaging 2.45 lock/miles per hour.

Met several other boats coming down the Llangollen Canal so made fast progress through the locks. Saw a knigfisher just above Hurlston Locks. Stopped just before the aqueduct at Nantwich for lunch.

From Nantwich Basin to Audlem Bottom Lock No 27 arriving at 4:15 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 5.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.1 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 136 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 230 locks, averaging 2.42 lock/miles per hour.

Saw Greyhound (from Kingsground Narrowboats) and Woodbury as we came through Nantwich. Came up the bottom two locks then moored on the visitor moorings. A cloudy and cool day.

Monday 16th June 1997

From Audlem Bottom Lock No 27 to Market Drayton Bridge No 62 arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 20 minutes. 6.5 miles and 20 locks, averaging 6.12 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 140 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 250 locks, averaging 2.49 lock/miles per hour.

Came up through the lock to the Shroppie Fly where we filled with water (25 minutes) then on through the rest of the flight and the Adderley Locks. Stopped for lunch just before the bridge.

From Market Drayton Bridge No 62 to Shebdon Aqueduct arriving at 6:30 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 7.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.99 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 143 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 255 locks, averaging 2.47 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping in Market Drayton town and at Safeway then set off up the locks. Met Sadie Dean coming down on Straw Bear. Could not find a good mooring at Glodstone bridge so we went on, having dinner on the move in shifts. Moored atthe aqueduct. A dry day, sunny in the morning and more cloudy after lunch.

Tuesday 17th June 1997

From Shebdon Aqueduct to Wheaton Aston Lock No 2 arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 3 hours 45 minutes. 11.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 147 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 255 locks, averaging 2.4 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for diesel (17.94 @ 15.9p per litre) and some grease for the stern tube (2.25) then moved through the bridge to stop at the Hartley Arms for lunch (Cheese omlettes 3.60 each).

From Wheaton Aston Lock No 2 to Brewood Bridge No 14 arriving at 4:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 25 minutes. 2.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.65 lock/miles per hour. Came through Wheaton Aston lock and up to the visitor moorings here. Went out to take some pictures. A fine sunny day.

Wednesday 18th June 1997

Stopped to fill with water at Autherley Junction but Kiwi Viking arrived just before us and we had to wait for him to fill first. We did not get moving again for a hour and a quarter. Stopped for lunch just before the lock.

From Compton Lock No 31 to Bratch Locks Nos 23, 24 and 25 arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 4.37 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.89 lock/miles per hour. Moored at the bottom of the locks. A sunny start to the day soon clouded over with a few spots of rain.

Thursday 19th June 1997

From Bratch Locks Nos 23, 24 and 25 to Kinver Lock No 11 arriving at 2:45 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 30 minutes. 8.5 miles and 14 locks, averaging 4.09 lock/miles per hour. Kept on cruising down the locks. Had lunch on the move. Saw a kingfisher. Saw Dennis on Absolute just before the lock. Moored just below the lock and went into the village for shopping at the Spar. Went for a drink after dinner at the Vine. A day of cloud and showers, some heavy.

Friday 20th June 1997

From Kinver Lock No 11 to Kidderminster Lock No 6 arriving at 12:05 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 6 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 163 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 281 locks, averaging 2.34 lock/miles per hour.

Set off in the dry but soon met the rain. Saw a kingfisher. Said hello to Priscilla's friends on Pendlewych as we went past them above Wolverley lock. Moored above the lock and went into town for lunch at The Red Man (Turkey, ham & leek pie 3.95 each) and some shopping. Came back to the boat the went to Sainsbury's.

From Kidderminster Lock No 6 to Bullock Lane Bridge No 9 arriving at 5:45 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 2.87 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.06 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 164 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 284 locks, averaging 2.33 lock/miles per hour.

Went on in more rain. Moored after the bridge. The porthole in our bedroom has been leaking. A mostly wet day with some sunny intervals this evening.

Sunday 22nd June 1997

From Bullock Lane Bridge No 9 to Stourport Junction arriving at 11:55 am. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 1.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.45 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 166 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 287 locks, averaging 2.32 lock/miles per hour.

Having spent the whole of Saturday watching the rain on our previous mooring we set off at at 9.45am and went down to the basin to fill with water. Saw Yeoman moored just before the the lock and chatted to the owner while we filled with water. Went through the narrow locks and moored on the river outside the Angel where we had lunch (Roast Lamb 4.20 each).

From Stourport Junction to Worcester Quay arriving at 3:45 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 12.37 miles and 3 locks, averaging 5.59 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 169 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 290 locks, averaging 2.3 lock/miles per hour.

Had to wait about 15 minutes at Lincombe Lock as the keeper was at lunch until 1.30pm. Saw a kingfisher just below the lock. Met a lot of narowboats coming up the river. Moored onthe City moorings near the racecourse. Went into the city and looked round the cathedral, including the tombs of King John and Prince Arthur (Henry VIII's brother). A dull start with a few spots of rain graadually improved as the day went on ending with sunshine.

Monday 23rd June 1997

From Worcester Quay to Tewksbury Lower Lode and fomer ferry site arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 17.87 miles and 2 locks, averaging 5.55 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 173 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 292 locks, averaging 2.26 lock/miles per hour.

The water level came up during the night on our Worcester moorings. There should have been a fee here but they didn't collect it. Set off swiftly with a good flow of water in the river. At the lock at Tewkesbury the keeper said we should moor at the Lower Lode pub as a tide was coming up over the Gloucester weir. Moored alongside two other narrowboats for lunch at the pub (Sausage and chips 2.75 each).

From Tewksbury Lower Lode and fomer ferry site to Gloucester Docks arriving at 4:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 11.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 4.55 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 175 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 292 locks, averaging 2.23 lock/miles per hour.

It took just 2 hours to do the 13 miles from Lower Lode into the lock. We the had to wait for another 10 minutes, while 3 other narrowboats joined us in the lock, before locking through and mooring in the dock. Posted the renewal premium for the boat insurance and took some pictures. Saw a kingfisher just outside Gloucester. Moored just after the bridge and went for lunch at the Bell (Sausage 4.90, Pork, apple & rosemary pie 5.90) and did some shopping at the shop.

From Fretherne Bridge to Patch bridge arriving at 5:30 pm. The time taken was 55 minutes. 3 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.27 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 179 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 292 locks, averaging 2.19 lock/miles per hour.

Filled with water just past the bridge then moved a little further on to the visitor moorings. A sunny start soon gave way to increasing cloud.

Stayed on Wednesday 25th and went to the Wetlands and Wld Fowl Trust at Slimbridge. The next day we decided not ttto move because of the constant wind and rain.

Saw Rutilus as we came back and they moored in the docks after us. We stopped for a pumpout at Lanthony Bridge bt the machine was out of order. Moored in the dock, picked up Beryl's film and went shopping at Sainsbury's. Had dinner at the Deep Pan Pizza (15.55). A cloudy and windy day.
