Saw a kingfisher just after Wightwick Lock. Had lunch on the move and stopped on the visitor mooriings here. A cloudy morning with some light showers becoming increasingly sunny as the day progressed.

Friday 2th August 1996

Did some shopping at several placces in Brewood. Called for a pumpout at Countrywide Cruisers in Brewood but they were turning hire boats around so it would have meant a long wait if we had not decided to go on to Norbury.Stopped for lunch on the visitors' moorings just past Tavern Bridge, No 19.

From Wheaton Aston Lock No 2 to Norbury Junction arriving at 3:55 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 7.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.21 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 542 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 768 locks, averaging 1.6 lock/miles per hour.

Stppoed at Dartline/Shropshire Union Cruises for a pumpout (10). Neither they nor Countrywide had Calor Gas, they both stocked other brands. Moved past the junction to the viisitor moorings. A cooler day of cloud and sunny periods with the occaisional very light shower.

Saturday 3th August 1996

From Norbury Junction to Goldstone Bridge No 55 arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 7.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.9 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 544 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 768 locks, averaging 1.59 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a rabbit swiming in the canal. Stopped for lunch at the Wharf Tavern (Rainbow Trout 6.95 each). Saw Mallard again, they moored opposite.

From Goldstone Bridge No 55 to Tyrley Top Lock No 3 arriving at 2:35 pm. The time taken was 50 minutes. 2.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.9 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 545 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 769 locks, averaging 1.59 lock/miles per hour.

Moored above the locks. A cool day with cloud and some sunny periods.

Sunday 4th August 1996

From Tyrley Top Lock No 3 to Market Drayton Bridge No 62 arriving at 11:15 am. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 1.37 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.03 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 547 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 773 locks, averaging 1.6 lock/miles per hour.

Came down through the locks and turned at the boatyard. Went back under bridge 62 and moored on the first mooring space. Did our shopping in Safeway and went back to the baoat for lunch. After lunch I went up to the locks and took some pictures and fishedd with the magnet - retrieved a windlass. A fine day with sunshine and cloud.

Monday 5th August 1996

From Market Drayton Bridge No 62 to Shebdon Aqueduct arriving at 1:50 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 7.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 550 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 778 locks, averaging 1.59 lock/miles per hour.

Went into Market Drayton to pick up the post. Saw Dulwich again as we went up Tyrley Locks. Followed by a boat called Nosnidoog (Goodinson?) and we both stopped to remoor a boat that had come adrift. Moored just before the aqueduct for a late lunch and decided tto call it a day. Warrm weather with a cooling breeze, cloudy bright with sunny periods.

Tuesday 6th August 1996

From Shebdon Aqueduct to Norbury Junction arriving at 11:35 am. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 3.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.33 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 552 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 778 locks, averaging 1.59 lock/miles per hour.

It started to rain soon after we set off and continued heavilyy until after we reached the junction. Had lunch and waited for the weather to improve.

From Norbury Junction to Wheaton Aston Lock No 2 arriving at 5:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 7.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.1 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 554 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 778 locks, averaging 1.58 lock/miles per hour.

Started off in sunshine and saw the hotel boats Rose and Castle and a boat called Purely Medicinal. The last two miles of the trip were in heavy rain and hail. Stopped on the visitor's moorings.

Wednesday 7th August 1996

From Wheaton Aston Lock No 2 to Coven Heath Bridge No 69 arriving at 1:55 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 15 minutes. 9.62 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.5 lock/miles per hour. Filled with diesel (65.37 litres @ 16.2p = 10.59) at Wheaton Aston before setting off. Saw Forever Cut going the opposite way. Were followed to Autherley by Gemini aand at the lock the woman from Gemini asked about how to prononce Shead and said she was reading my articles. Also passed Lincoln Imp, the woman on which mentioned my articles.

From Coven Heath Bridge No 69 to Gailey Lock No 32 arriving at 5:45 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 5.87 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.84 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 561 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 780 locks, averaging 1.57 lock/miles per hour.

Set off after lunch at 14.35 and reached Gailey at 16.40 and started to fill with water. The tank was nearly empty and the tap was slow so we did not finish until 17.25. Went through the lock and moored below. A dull start to the day but a warm and sunny afternoon.

Thursday 8th August 1996

From Gailey Lock No 32 to Penkridge Lock No 38 arriving at 11:55 am. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 2.75 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 563 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 786 locks, averaging 1.57 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just before the lock. Had a walk round the town, did a bit of shopping a the Co-op and had lunch at the Star (Gammon Steak 3.75 each) very good.

From Penkridge Lock No 38 to Haywood Lock No 22 arriving at 6:00 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 45 minutes. 10.12 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.18 lock/miles per hour. Went through most of the locks behind Fortune (Wheatly & Daughters), who had a dutch rabbit on board. A very pleasant run. A warm day of sunshinne and cloud.

Friday 9th August 1996

Moored just past the bridge and went into town to collect the post and to do some shopping after Safeways we took the shopping back to the boat and then went off to lunch at the Pig and Bells (Jumbo sausage baggette 1.20, Chips and bread & butter 90p). Then more shopping at Safeway.

From Rugeley Bridge No 66 to Wood End Lock No 20 arriving at 5:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 6.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.79 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 572 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 793 locks, averaging 1.56 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just before the lock, which was quite busy this evening with people queuing. Fished with the magnet but found nothing. A warm day with long sunny periods after a damp and cloudy start.

Saturday 10th August 1996

From Wood End Lock No 20 to Hopwas arriving at 1:45 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 35 minutes. 9 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.62 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 576 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 796 locks, averaging 1.55 lock/miles per hour.

Met a lot of boats coming down the 3 locks to Fradley. Wanted to moor at Hopwas for lunch but no moorings free. Moored near Dunstall Farm Bridge. A warm and mostly sunny day with a breeze. Some heavy showers in the early morning and evening.

Sunday 11th August 1996

Came up the Glascote locks aand stopped for gas (1.60) at Steve Hudson's. Met quite a lot of boats on the move. Moored by bridge 52 aand had roast pork for lunch.

Monday 12th August 1996

From Polesworth (Mill Bridge No 53) to Atherstone Top Lock No 1 arriving at 11:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 5 miles and 10 locks, averaging 4.62 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 583 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 808 locks, averaging 1.56 lock/miles per hour.

It took us 2 hours 20 minutes to do the Atherstone flight. Met several boats coming down. Moored at the top and went into town. Did some shopping at Gateway and had lunch in the White Lion (Ham & Tomato Sandwich 1.95, Chips 75p).

From Atherstone Top Lock No 1 to Hartshill Wharf arriving at 2:30 pm. The time taken was 35 minutes. 2.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 5.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 583 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 809 locks, averaging 1.56 lock/miles per hour.

Filled with water at the wharf then moved across and just through the bridge to moor for the night. A warm day of sunshine and cloud.Went for a drink at the Stag & Pheasant in the village.

Tuesday 13th August 1996

Before we left Hartshill Fred and Joyce came along on Wigram's Turn and stopped for a chat, they had moored at Anchor Bridge. We stopped on the visitor moorings just before the bridge and went to the Lime Kiln Inn for lunch (Ham rolls 1.50 each). Came back to the boat for drinks etc. A mostly sunny day with some cloudy intervals.

Wednesday 14th August 1996

We couldn't moor at Nutts bridge to go into Hinckley as the visitor moorings were full so we went on. Dumped our rubbish at Sutton Cheyney. Saw Saturn and Gort moored. Stopped for lunch on the battlefield moorings.

From Shenton Station to Bosworth Wharf Bridge No 42 arriving at 2:30 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 1.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.73 lock/miles per hour. Moored at the visitor's moorings through the bridge. Went into town and did some shopping and the Co-op and the greengrocer's. A dull morning with a cool breeze giving way to hazy sun and warmer tempratures in the afternoon.

Thursday 15th August 1996

From Bosworth Wharf Bridge No 42 to Head of navigation arriving at 11:50 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 6.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.5 lock/miles per hour. Stopped for water and rubbish disposal. Saw Dipper and Yorkshire Rose, both from Sheffield, moored att Shackerstone.

From Head of navigation to SnarestonTunnel arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 25 minutes. 0.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.8 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 595 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 809 locks, averaging 1.53 lock/miles per hour.

Turned the boat and came back through the tunnel to moor on the visitor moorings. Went to the Globe for lunch (Turkeyand stuffing rolls 1.25 each). When we got back to the boat a couple from Crowland had just moored their Ashby Hire boat next to us. Had a chat with them about Peterborough and canals.

From SnarestonTunnel to Shackerstone arriving at 4:15 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 25 minutes. 2.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 596 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 809 locks, averaging 1.52 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at the visitor moorings. A warm day of sun and hazy sun, after a cool start.

Friday 16th August 1996

Had lunch on the move and stopped on the moorings by bridge 16. Imladris moored behind us. We went into Hinkley to do some shopping at various shops, including Kwik Save. A warm and mostly sunny day.

Stopped at Limekiln bridge for 20 minutes to fill up with water. Stopped at the moorings by bridge 5 and went to the Corner House Hotel for lunch (Ham sandwiches 2.20 each).

Sunday 18th August 1996

Stopped at the top the locks for shopping but Gateway was closed for refurbishment so we went to the little Post Office and off-licence in the opposite direction.

From Atherstone Top Lock No 1 to Glascote Top Lock No 12 arriving at 3:35 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 5 minutes. 9 miles and 11 locks, averaging 3.93 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 612 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 821 locks, averaging 1.5 lock/miles per hour.

Followed a cruiser down the Atherstone flight, which took 2 hours 45 minutes, then stopped to get rid of the rubbish at Grendon Wharf. Had lunch on the move and moored at Glascote. No meals at the pub so we got a Chinese take away (13.50). Walked down to Fazley Junction. A hot sunny day but with a breeze.

Monday 19th August 1996

From Glascote Top Lock No 12 to Fazeley Junction arriving at 10:00 am. The time taken was 50 minutes. 1.5 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 612 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 822 locks, averaging 1.5 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water and Beryl went shopping. Met some people on Lissa, who moor at Ringstead.

Moored by Wigginshill Bridge. Had a drink in the Kingsley Arms and got talking to a very nice couple from Maudelayne, a 62 foot narrowboat. A hot and sunny day.

Tuesday 20th August 1996

From Curdworth Tunnel to Perry Barr Top Lock No 1 arriving at 2:55 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 55 minutes. 8.75 miles and 16 locks, averaging 4.18 lock/miles per hour. Came up the Tyburn locks then on to the Tame Valley. Some of the pounds low and many of the paddles not working. Got a plastic bag, then a tyre, minus tread, wrapped round the prop. Rescued a dog from the second lock up. Stopped for water (tap very slow) and mooring at the top lock. Jack Graham came past on Don't Panic, on his way to the festival. Wednesday 21st August 1996

Had to clear the prop before turning on to the Rushall Canal and again later. Went up the locks and stopped at the Manor Arms for lunch (Gammon and egg 3.90 each). Just as lunch was being served a fisherman came in to say some boys had cast off one of our mooring ropes.

Thursday 22nd August 1996

From Junction with Anglesey Branch to Wolverhampton Top Lock No 4 arriving at 2:45 pm. The time taken was 7 hours 15 minutes. 17 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.48 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 637 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 860 locks, averaging 1.5 lock/miles per hour.

Set off at 7.30 and did seven and a half hours without stopping, except to open the weed hatch a couple of times. Rubbish and weed in the Wyrley & Essington slowed us down. Saw maany coots and a lot of waterlilies of various colours. Went shopping in town, bought a new pair of trainers, got 3 films processed in an hour in Boots and got groceries at Tesco's. A mainly sunny day but rain in the late afternoon and evening.

Friday 23rd August 1996

Backed up from Wolverhampton Top Lock to turn just through the bridge. Had a good trip down the main line and stopped for water just before the tunnel.

Winded just before Bishtons Bridge and came back to or mooring before Griffin Bridge. Went shopping and collected the post at Netherton. Saw Pam and Andy from Pamandy, Forever Cut and Zigeuner. A showery day.

Tuesday 27th August 1996

From Southern Junction with Bumble Hole Branch Canal to Waring's Green Bridge No 19 arriving at 5:20 pm. The time taken was 9 hours 0 minutes. 23.37 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 651 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 865 locks, averaging 1.48 lock/miles per hour.

A slow start to get to the tunnel due to the number of boats moored and on the move. Was nearly through the tunnel when the oil pressure alarm came on aand the temprature gauge showed overheating. I switched off the engine and bow hauled the boat out of the tunnel and up to the water point. Filled with water and filled the engine water again although no sign of any leakage point. went on OK after that, having lunch on the move and stopping for diesel (148 litres for 35.52), gas and pumpout (9) at Lyons Boatyard.

Wednesday 28th August 1996

From Waring's Green Bridge No 19 to Lapworth Lock No 6 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 3.75 miles and 5 locks, averaging 2.28 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 655 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 870 locks, averaging 1.48 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the Lapworth locks followed by the 61 foot Pelican, on theirway back to Napton. Moored below lock 14 and went to the Boot for lunch (Salmon and Haddock fishcakes 8.45, Duck breast 9.25), nice pub, good food but rather pretentious and pricey.

Stratford upon Avon Canal to Grand Union Main Line

From Lapworth Lock No 6 to Hatton Station Bridge No 56 arriving at 5:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 5.25 miles and 14 locks, averaging 6.42 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 658 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 884 locks, averaging 1.49 lock/miles per hour.

The Lapworth flight continued to be busy, boats in front, behind and coming up the locks. Moored in the countryside following the bridge. A day of sunshine and showers, as the weather has been for these last 6 days.

Thursday 29th August 1996

From Hatton Station Bridge No 56 to Cape Bottom Lock No 24 arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 4 hours 10 minutes. 3.87 miles and 23 locks, averaging 6.45 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 662 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 907 locks, averaging 1.52 lock/miles per hour.

Set off at 8.25 for Hatton Top Lock. At 9am, when the locks opened, we had 6 boats ahead of us and two behind. We went down the locks with Dunlin from Napton. Angela phoned on the way down. We stopped below Cape Bottom lock for water and lunch.

From Cape Bottom Lock No 24 to Coventry Road Bridge No 49 arriving at 1:35 pm. The time taken was 20 minutes. 0.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.86 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 662 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 907 locks, averaging 1.52 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped on the visitor's moorings opposite Kate Boats, Walked into town, posted note to Angela, got some dosh from the Midland and went round St Marys Church. A cool cloudy morning with some warm sun in the afternoon.

Friday 30th August 1996

From Coventry Road Bridge No 49 to Leam Bridge No 44 arriving at 82:0 pm. The time taken was 40 minutes. 1.12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.68 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 663 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 907 locks, averaging 1.52 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped outside the Moorings and went to Sainsbury's for shopping. Went into the pub for a drink then back to the boat for lunch, etc.

From Leam Bridge No 44 to Welsh Road Lock No 18 arriving at 5:35 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 5.37 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.87 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 665 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 913 locks, averaging 1.52 lock/miles per hour.

Went through the locks with Sarah Grace from Braunston. Moored just before the lock. A dull wet day but a fine evening.

Went through the Grand Union locks with Jeremy Fisher then Saarah Grace. Saw a kingfisher above Stockton locks. Moored at the bottom of Napton locks. I walked upthe flight and took pictures. Met the waterway photographer Bryan Hicks. A warm day of sunshine and cloud.
