Thursday 1th May 2008

From to York Street Lock No 3 arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 3.38 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 24 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 52.38 miles and 46 locks, averaging 3.96 lock/miles per hour.

Had a good run down to Stourport and through into the basin. Went to the Angel for lunch and afterwards filled with water and had a pumpout (10). Was able to to stay overnight in the basin. The river was closed due to the recent heavy rain. York Street Lock No 3: Stourport Basins - 1st May 2008.

Friday 2th May 2008

From York Street Lock No 3 to Caldwall Hall Bridge No 15 arriving at 3:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 3.38 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 26 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 55.75 miles and 52 locks, averaging 4 lock/miles per hour.

I got my hair cut in the "Cutting Rooms" at Stourport and got a new switch for the shower pump in the morning. We then had lunch at the Angel again before setting off. Moored near Tesco's in Kidderminster.

Saturday 3th May 2008

From Caldwall Hall Bridge No 15 to Wolverley Lock No 8 arriving at 3:55 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 10 minutes. 3.38 miles and 6 locks, averaging 8.04 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 28 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 59.13 miles and 58 locks, averaging 4.17 lock/miles per hour.

Had lunch at Pizza Hut before setting off from Kidderminster. Moored for the night below Wolverley Lock. Another showery day.

Monday 5th May 2008

From Wolverley Lock No 8 to Kinver Lock No 11 arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 3.38 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.33 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 30 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 62.5 miles and 64 locks, averaging 4.18 lock/miles per hour.

Yesterday was wet so we stayed put at Wolverley and had lunch at the Lock pub. We ran the engine and used the washing machine. Today we came up to moor below Kinver Lock and went to the Vine for lunch. A rather wet morning but drier in the afternoon.

Tuesday 6th May 2008

From Kinver Lock No 11 to Hinksford Lock No 17 arriving at 5:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 5.88 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.96 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 33 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 68.38 miles and 70 locks, averaging 4.16 lock/miles per hour.

In the morning I went into Wilson's to place an order for our boat cover then walked down to Whittington Lock and back taking photos. We had lunch at the Vine and set off at 13.40. Stopped 30 minutes for water above Kinver Lock then went on to moor for the night on Hinksford Aqueduct. Today was the first warm sunny day of the trip.

Wednesday 7th May 2008

From Hinksford Lock No 17 to Wombourn Bridge No 43 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 5.88 miles and 6 locks, averaging 6.79 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 35 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 74.25 miles and 76 locks, averaging 4.29 lock/miles per hour.

Followed another boat down to Wombourn Bridge and were followed by a Viking hire boat from Worcester with a very helpful and experienced crew. Moored before the bridge and went to the Round Oak pub for lunch.

From Wombourn Bridge No 43 to Compton Lock No 31 arriving at 5:20 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 5 minutes. 5.88 miles and 6 locks, averaging 2.91 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 39 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 80.13 miles and 82 locks, averaging 4.15 lock/miles per hour.

We had quite a wait to enter Bratch Locks while the Viking boat went up and two other boats came down. Then we let a community boat go before us as they had a schedule to meet. After Bratch most of the locks were in our favour. Stopped on the moorings before Compton Bridge, where I spotted a group of Long Tailed Tits in the trees opposite. Another warm sunny day.

Friday 9th May 2008

From Compton Lock No 31 to Brewood Bridge No 14 arriving at 5:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 2.38 miles and 0 locks, averaging 0.81 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 42 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 82.5 miles and 82 locks, averaging 3.92 lock/miles per hour.

Spent the Thursday at Compton Bridge. Went shopping at the Spar in the morning. Collected my filters from Limekiln Chandlery and did the 9711 hours service in the afternoon changing the oil filter. Had lunch at the Oddfellows Arms.

Set off today at 10.00 and went to Limekiln Chandlers for a pumpout (8) and then on to the lock at 10.30. BW were clearing the ground paddle culvert of rubbish and then found they had no suitable manhole cover to replace the one that had been destroyed during the work. The lock repopened at 14.10 and we cruised on to Autherley Junction where we stopped 20 minutes to fill with water. Moored just past Bridge 13 at Brewood and went to the Admiral Rodney for dinner. A Bright, warm day with a shower in the afternoon.

Sunday 11th May 2008

From Brewood Bridge No 14 to Wheaton Aston Lock No 2 arriving at 4:20 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 25 minutes. 2.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.65 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 43 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 85.25 miles and 83 locks, averaging 3.88 lock/miles per hour.

Spent Saturday and most of today in Brewood. Did some shopping and had two more lunches at the Admiral Rodney. This morning I touched up one side of the boat with primer. This afternoon we set off for Wheaton Aston and stopped 20 minutes for water before mooring below the lock. We have had two warm, sunny days.

Monday 12th May 2008

From Wheaton Aston Lock No 2 to Cowley Tunnel No 33 arriving at 4:30 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 4.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.56 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 44 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 90 miles and 83 locks, averaging 3.87 lock/miles per hour.

Painted the side of the boat with blue paint in the morning at Wheaton Aston and went to the Hartley Arms for a disappointing lunch. Set off at 14.15 and had to stop at Bridge 24 because of an oil pressure alarm. Spent 25 minutes establishing that it was probably a bad connection on the oil pressure gauge and alarm circuit rather than a real problem with the oil pressure. Moored at at Gnosall just after the tunnel. A warm sunny day.

Tuesday 13th May 2008

From Cowley Tunnel No 33 to Norbury Junction arriving at 3:30 pm. The time taken was 55 minutes. 4.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 5.18 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 45 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 94.75 miles and 83 locks, averaging 3.89 lock/miles per hour.

Polished one side of the boat in the morning and went to the Navigation pub for lunch. Came on to Norbury Junction ready for our hull blacking tomorrow. A sunny day with a cooling breeze.

Sunday 18th May 2008

From Norbury Junction to Shebdon Aqueduct arriving at 11:40 am. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 3.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.23 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 46 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 98.25 miles and 83 locks, averaging 3.88 lock/miles per hour.

After spending four days in the dry dock at Norbury having the boat blacked, the automatic bilge repaired and the oil pressure gauge and alarm fixed we were back afloat. We filled with water and had a pumpout (14.50) before setting off up the canal. Although the oil pressure gauge seemed OK when we set off I later found it was back to its old low reading and that the alarm sounded at tick over speed. I rang Norbury Wharf and Mick came out and look at the problem but concluded we would have to return to Norbury to get it fixed.

From Shebdon Aqueduct to Norbury Junction arriving at 2:20 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 3.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.21 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 48 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 83 locks, averaging 3.79 lock/miles per hour.

Turned at Shebdon Aqueduct and returned to Norbury where we turned again and moored next to a hire boat. A cool but sunny day.

Tuesday 20th May 2008

From Norbury Junction to Market Drayton Bridge No 62 arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 11.13 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.03 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 52 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 88 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour.

After waiting most of Monday for the oil pressure problem to be sorted out it was concluded that what was needed was a new engine, so we left with the problem still unresolved. We had another good dinner at the Junction Inn.

Today we came on to Market Drayton and had lunch at a pub in the town centre. A cool but sunny day.

Wednesday 21st May 2008

From Market Drayton Bridge No 62 to Adderley Bottom Lock No 12 arriving at 2:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 3.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 6.38 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 53 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 93 locks, averaging 3.6 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for 35 minutes at Market Drayton to fill with water before going on to the Adderley Flight. Stopped at the bottom for lunch.

From Adderley Bottom Lock No 12 to Audlem Lock No 15 arriving at 4:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 0 minutes. 3.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 8.5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 54 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 98 locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the top two locks of the Audlem flight and moored on the visitor moorings. A sunny day.

Thursday 22nd May 2008

From Audlem Lock No 15 to Audlem Lock No 24 arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 1 hour 15 minutes. 3.5 miles and 9 locks, averaging 10 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 55 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 107 locks, averaging 3.7 lock/miles per hour.

Took some photos of boats coming up the flight in the morning then had to refix the belts and struts on the engine as two bolts had dropped out following the work at Norbury. We then came down the flight to stop on the visitor moorings above lock 24. We went to the Bridge Inn for a very good lunch in this newly refurbished pub.

From Audlem Lock No 24 to Hack Green Locks Nos 28 and 29 arriving at 3:45 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 10 minutes. 3.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 7.29 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 57 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 112 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour.

After lunch we looked round the Audlum Mill shop before completing the flight and going on to moor just beyond Bridge 83 - a mile before Hack Green Locks. A sunny day.

Friday 23rd May 2008

From Hack Green Locks Nos 28 and 29 to Nantwich Basin arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 2.25 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.32 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 58 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 114 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Hack Green locks and backed into Nantwich Basin. Filled with diesel (125.44 litres @ 80p = 100.35) and arraged to have the side hatch re-lined and the oil pressure investigated on 2nd June. We went a mile on to Henhull Bridge No. 95 to turn and come back to moor on Nantwich Aqueduct at 13.40. Had lunch at the Crown in town and went shopping at Morrisons. The day started with presistent light rain but was dry and sunny in the afternoon.

Sunday 25th May 2008

From Nantwich Basin to Barbridge Junction arriving at 11:55 am. The time taken was 1 hour 15 minutes. 3.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.6 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 60 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 114 locks, averaging 3.56 lock/miles per hour.

We spent Saturday in Nantwich and had lunch at the Oddfellows Arms in Welsh Row. Today we stopped 30 minutes for water by Nanwich Basin before coming on to moor at Bremilows Bridge No 100. We went across the bridge to the Old Barbridge Inn for Sunday Lunch. A dry morning but we had rain in the afternoon.

From Barbridge Junction to Minshull Mill Bridge No 14 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 4.88 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.66 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 62 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 116 locks, averaging 3.44 lock/miles per hour.

The Shropshire Union Canal Society were operating Cholmondeston Lock and selling a wide range of items to raise money. Stopped 10 minutes at Venetian Marina for a pumpout (15). Moored just before Bridge 14 at Church Minshall. Had lunch on the boat. A dry but windy day.

From Minshull Mill Bridge No 14 to Wardle Lock No 4 arriving at 11:20 am. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 5.13 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.34 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 64 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 117 locks, averaging 3.36 lock/miles per hour.

Met a lot of boats coming the opposite way today. Moored just before bridge 30 and went to collect the post. Had lunch at the Narrow Boat and then went round the shops for a few things. We had a wet night but it kept dry for today.

Thursday 29th May 2008

From Wardle Lock No 4 to Barbridge Junction arriving at 3:05 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 40 minutes. 10 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.21 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 69 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 122 locks, averaging 3.21 lock/miles per hour.

Yesterday we spent a wet day in Middlewich and did our shopping. We had lunch at the Narrow Boat again.

Today we went through Wardle Lock, spent 35 minutes filling with water and returned at Barbridge Junction, having lunch on the move. We moored just past the junction near the facilities and had dinner on the boat. A sunny day witha shower in the evening.

Came down to Nantwich and moored on the Aqueduct. Went to the Oddfellows Arms for lunch and then on to town for shopping and a coffee before going on to Morrisons. A sunny day.

From Nantwich Basin to Audlem Bottom Lock No 27 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 3.25 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.25 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 72 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 124 locks, averaging 3.08 lock/miles per hour.

Set off from Nantwich Aqueduct but had to stop just after Marsh Lane Bridge No 91 as the Seapower belt was slipping when the washing machine cut in. In took half an hour to take off the belts, replace the faulty one and get going again. We moored just before Audlum Bottom Lock and went to the Bridge Inn for lunch Another sunny day.
