From to Claydon Top Lock No 17 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 11 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 261 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 362 locks, averaging 1.77 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a hare near Griffins Bridge, No. 131. Stopped 25 minutes at Fenny Compton Marina for a pumpout (12 for a DIY pumpout plus blue). Moored for lunch just after Hay Bridge, No. 143.

Came down the locks and moored a little way before the lock. Went to the Red Lion for dinner. A sunny morning but more cloudy this afternoon with a few spots of rain.

From Cropredy Lock No 25 to Banbury Lock No 29 arriving at 11:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 4.5 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.29 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 266 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 374 locks, averaging 1.78 lock/miles per hour.

Spent 20 minutes filling with water at Cropredy before coming down the next three locks. Moored outside the shopping centre and went to Somerfield to do some shopping. A mostly cloudy day.

From Banbury Lock No 29 to Aynho Bridge No 190 arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 6.87 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.1 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 269 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 379 locks, averaging 1.78 lock/miles per hour.

Met queues at King's Sutton and Nell Bridge locks. Moored a little way before the marked moorings as they were all full. Had a very good lunch at the Great Western. A cloudy start to the day but sunny later.

Monday 4th July 2005

From Aynho Bridge No 190 to Dashwood's Lock No 37 arriving at 2:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 7.5 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.21 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 273 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 383 locks, averaging 1.77 lock/miles per hour.

Met a few boats coming up and down the locks but we did not encounter any queues today. Stopped 25 minutes at Lower Heyford for water. Moored below Dashwoods Lock. A mostly cloudy day with some showers and sunny periods.

From Dashwood's Lock No 37 to Langford Lane Bridge No 224 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 6.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.58 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 276 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 387 locks, averaging 1.76 lock/miles per hour.

Quite a few boats were coming up the canal as we went down. Passed the new Kingsground basin at Enslow. Had lunch at the Jolly Boatman.

From Langford Lane Bridge No 224 to Aristotle Bridge No 240 arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 5.25 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.58 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 279 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 391 locks, averaging 1.76 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped on the visitor moorings just past the bridge. A cloudy day with incrasing showers in the afternoon.

Came down the canal to moor before Isis Lock. Did our shopping at Sainsburys and after lunch more shopping.

From Isis Lock No 46 to Folly Bridge arriving at 4:55 pm. The time taken was 50 minutes. 1.25 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.9 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 280 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 393 locks, averaging 1.76 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Isis Lock an onto the Thames. There were no moorings at Osney so we went through the lock and on th below Folly Bridge where we moored just beyond the official moorings. A mostly dry day with some sunshine in the afternoon.

Thursday 7th July 2005

From Folly Bridge to Abingdon Bridge arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 8.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.66 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 282 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 396 locks, averaging 1.75 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Sandford Lock with a Salter's trip boat and narrowboat "Oxford". Saw a kingfisher afer the lock and several families of Great Crested Grebes. Spent 50 minutes above Abingdon Lock waiting to get onto the water and filling up. We moored alongside the dutch barge "Becky", from Canary Wharf, and were told about the bombings in London this morning. Moored before the bridge. A mostly cloudy day with some light showers.

Friday 8th July 2005

From Abingdon Bridge to Wallingford Bridge arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 45 minutes. 13 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.53 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 286 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 400 locks, averaging 1.75 lock/miles per hour.

Shared the locks with the cruiser Columbus and the narrowboat Gralyn. Saw a kingfisher before Shillingford and another at Wallingford. Moored in the willows before the bridge. More shopping after lunch. A day of sunshine and cloud.

From Wallingford Bridge to Goring Lock arriving at 10:30 am. The time taken was 1 hour 40 minutes. 5.87 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.72 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 288 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 402 locks, averaging 1.74 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher at Molesworth. Filled with water at Cleve Lock (5 minutes) and moored below the lock at Goring. Had lunch at the Miller of Mansfield.

From Goring Lock to Whitchurch Lock arriving at 3:25 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 4.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.84 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 289 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 403 locks, averaging 1.74 lock/miles per hour.

The moorings were busy at Beale Park and completely full below Whitchurch Lock so we went on and moored before Hardwick House. A cloudy morning and a more sunny afternoon.

Sunday 10th July 2005

From Whitchurch Lock to River Kennet Junction arriving at 10:45 am. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 7.37 miles and 2 locks, averaging 5.11 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 291 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 405 locks, averaging 1.73 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher near Hardwick House and another below Caversham Lock. Moored beside another boat outside Tescos and went shopping. Had lunch on the boat.

River Thames to Kennet and Avon Canal

From River Kennet Junction to High Bridge, Reading arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 55 minutes. 0.5 miles and 1 locks, averaging 1.64 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 292 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 406 locks, averaging 1.73 lock/miles per hour.

Went up to Better Boating for a pumpout (10), water (1) and diesel (132.74 litres @ 42p = 55.75). We turned and came back to the Kennet Junction and up the Kennet to the Reading Gaol moorings. A hot sunny day.

Monday 11th July 2005

From High Bridge, Reading to Henley Bridge arriving at 6:30 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 8.87 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.68 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 295 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 410 locks, averaging 1.72 lock/miles per hour.

Rosemary and Ben arrived after lunch and we set off down river. We stopped 15 minutes or more below Shiplake Lock because the boat would not start. We got it going again by taking a jumplead from the domestic battaries but I am not sure about the cause of the problem. Moored by the River and Rowing Museum at Henley and had dinner at a fish restaurant in the town. A hot sunny day.

Tuesday 12th July 2005

From Henley Bridge to Cookham Bridge arriving at 1:35 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 12.12 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 299 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 414 locks, averaging 1.72 lock/miles per hour.

Still having trouble with startig the engine but was able to leave it running at all the locks except Hambleden. Stopped at Bourne End Marina for about 45 minutes to get the trouble sorted out but it could not be resolved so we agreed to go back tomorrow to complete the investigations. Came down to the public moorings (6) and looked round the village, church and Spencer Museum. Went to the Bel and the Dragon for dinner. A hot sunny day.

Wednesday 13th July 2005

From Cookham Bridge to Bourne End Railway Bridge arriving at 71:5 pm. The time taken was 25 minutes. 1.12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.69 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 299 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 414 locks, averaging 1.71 lock/miles per hour.

Turned round and headed back to Bourne End Marina. Saw a kingfisher just before the railway bridge. Matt finally traced the fault (a bad connection to the neutral cable of the battery) and replaced both battery connectors. Paid 60 for the work over the two days.

From Bourne End Railway Bridge to Windsor Railway Viaduct arriving at 2:05 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 10.37 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 303 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 418 locks, averaging 1.71 lock/miles per hour.

We had waits at all the locks today due to lack of wate rin the river. The Lock Keepers were trying to get as many boats as possible into each of the locks. Moored just before the railway bridge. I walked round the town with Rosemary and Ben. Another hot day.

From Windsor Railway Viaduct to Staines Bridge arriving at 11:05 am. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 7.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.96 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 305 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 421 locks, averaging 1.7 lock/miles per hour.

Saw two kingfishers below Bell Weir Lock moored just past the Swan and went shopping at Sainsbury's. Had lunch on the boat.

From Staines Bridge to Coxes Lock No 14 arriving at 5:25 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 55 minutes. 7.5 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.45 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 309 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 427 locks, averaging 1.7 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 35 minutes for water at Chertsey Lock (we had to wait for a cruiser to fill before we could start). Turned onto the Wey and paid for our 7 day visitor licence (48 minus 10% for National Trust Members = 43.20). Moored a little way beyond the lock in the shade and had dinner on the boat. A hot and sunny day.

Friday 15th July 2005

From Coxes Lock No 14 to High Bridge arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 6.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.54 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 313 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 432 locks, averaging 1.7 lock/miles per hour.

Saw two kingfishers between New Haw and Pyrford. Stopped 15 minutes at Pyrford Marina for a pumpout (14). Stopped for lunch just before the bridge.

From High Bridge to Onslow Bridge arriving at 3:35 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 7 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 315 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 436 locks, averaging 1.7 lock/miles per hour.

Came up to Guildford and moored on the 24 hour moorings before the bridge. Went round the town and booked for dinner at the Cafe de Paris (Castle Street). A cloudy start soon gave way to a warm sunny day.

Saturday 16th July 2005

From Onslow Bridge to Godalming Town Bridge arriving at 10:55 am. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 4.62 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.14 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 317 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 440 locks, averaging 1.7 lock/miles per hour.

Came up to Godalming Wharf, turned and moored. Had lunch at Bel and the Dragon then got a taxi to the station to see Rosemary and Ben off on their train. Went shopping at Sainsbury's.

From Godalming Town Bridge to Stoke Lock No 5 arriving at 6:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 6.75 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.03 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 320 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 445 locks, averaging 1.7 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the river, sharing two of the locks with two different groups of canoests. A lot of canoes and rowing boats about this afternoon. Moored just below the lock. Heard rumours of clousures on the Oxford and Kennet & Avon canals due to water shortages. A hot sunny day.

Sunday 17th July 2005

From Stoke Lock No 5 to Cart Bridge arriving at 11:35 am. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 4.37 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.02 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 322 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 448 locks, averaging 1.7 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher before Bowers Lock. Moored at Cartbridge and had lunch in the New Inn. A lot of boats about this morning.

Went shopping for a few items in Teddington before setting off after an early lunch. Had to pay 5.50 for mooring at Teddington. Came down the tidal stretch with the narrowboat Salpender. They had not done the journey before and followed our lead. We only made a brief stop at Thames Lock as the tide was almost level and locking through was very quick.

From Thames Locks No 101 to Bulls Bridge Junction arriving at 5:30 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 5.87 miles and 12 locks, averaging 4.87 lock/miles per hour. Came up the locks with Salpender. One of the Hanwell pounds was very low and Lorna Ann could not get into the lock until we had let some water down. Moored at Tesco's. A day of sunshine and cloud.

From Bulls Bridge Junction to Dolphin Bridge No 186 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 5.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 337 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 473 locks, averaging 1.7 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping at Tesco and filled with water before setting off. A tug and sand barge went through Cowley Lock before us. Moored before Dolphin Bridge for lunch then I went into town to get some photos transfered to CD.

From Dolphin Bridge No 186 to Widewater Lock No 86 arriving at 4:10 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 3.12 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.84 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 338 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 475 locks, averaging 1.7 lock/miles per hour.

Saw two sand barges on the move this afternoon. Called into Harefield Marina while we had a pumpout (13.50) and I bought a new mooring spike. Moved across to the visitor moorings below the lock. A mostly sunny day.

Thursday 21st July 2005

From Widewater Lock No 86 to Cassiobridge, Watford, No 169 arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 6.5 miles and 8 locks, averaging 4.05 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 342 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 483 locks, averaging 1.7 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher below Black Jacks Lock and a Great Crested Grebe before Lot Mead Lock. Moored before the bridge and walked into Watford where we had pizza for lunch at Zinco. Walked round the town and came back by taxi. A sunny day.

Friday 22nd July 2005

From Cassiobridge, Watford, No 169 to Home Park Mill Lock No 70 arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 4.25 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.97 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 345 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 491 locks, averaging 1.71 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 15 minutes for water above Cassiobridge Lock No 78. Moored a little way before Kings Langley lock and went into the village and had luch at La Ccsetta (11.95 each for two courses).

From Home Park Mill Lock No 70 to Nash Mill Top Lock No 68 arriving at 4:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 15 minutes. 1.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.8 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 346 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 494 locks, averaging 1.72 lock/miles per hour.

Many of these Grand Union locks have no gate paddles and are slow to fill. We moored on the rings just above the lock. A mostly cloudy day with some sunny intervals.

Saturday 23rd July 2005

From Nash Mill Top Lock No 68 to Bottom Side Lock No 57 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 4.25 miles and 11 locks, averaging 4.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 349 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 505 locks, averaging 1.73 lock/miles per hour.

Came up most of the locks solo but went through four or five with a boat called Typhoon. Moored above the lock for lunch.

From Bottom Side Lock No 57 to Northchurch Bottom Lock No 52 arriving at 3:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 1.75 miles and 5 locks, averaging 5.06 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 351 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 510 locks, averaging 1.74 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the rest of the locks alone and moored between locks 53 and 52. Went to the Post Office to send off an article. A mostly cloudy day with a little light shower or two.

Sunday 24th July 2005

From Northchurch Bottom Lock No 52 to Cowroast Lock No 46 (Summit Lock) arriving at 6:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 2.25 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.44 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 353 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 517 locks, averaging 1.75 lock/miles per hour.

Spent a wet day in Berkhamstead and had lunch at the Boat (Roast Beef 7.95 each) we then had a walk round the town and stopped at the Cafe Rouge for a dessert and coffee. The rain cleared in the afternoon so we came up to Cowroast, filled with water for 25 minutes, then moored just past the marina.

Monday 25th July 2005

From Cowroast Lock No 46 (Summit Lock) to Marsworth Junction arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 3.87 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.35 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 355 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 524 locks, averaging 1.75 lock/miles per hour.

Waited for the rain to stop before we set off. Saw a kingfisher in Tring Cutting. Several boats were coming up the locks as we went down. Moored just past the Red Lion Bridge for lunch.

From Marsworth Junction to Seabrook Top Lock No 36 arriving at 3:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 0 minutes. 1.87 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.87 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 356 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 527 locks, averaging 1.76 lock/miles per hour.

Shared the two Marsworth locks with a Grebe Cruises day boat. Moored below Seabrook Top Lock. A cloudy day.

From Seabrook Top Lock No 36 to Leighton Buzzard Bridge No 114 arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 6.25 miles and 8 locks, averaging 4.62 lock/miles per hour. Came through the locks with a man on Countess Rose who was returning single-handed to Ramsey. Moored before the bridge and walked into Leighton Buzzard for lunch at Babbington's(?) a cafe/restaurant hidded up an ally. We found the town had a poor selection of good places to eat. A mostly cloudy day with some hazy sunshine.

From Leighton Buzzard Bridge No 114 to Willen Bridge No 81 arriving at 6:10 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 40 minutes. 12.37 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.94 lock/miles per hour. Went shopping at Tesco and had lunch there before setting off. Stopped 25 minutes for water at Leighton Buzzard. Came through Soulbury and Stoke Hammond locks with the Challenger boat "Charlton". Moored just before bridge 82. A cloudy day with some light rain.

From Linford Bridge No 77 to Solomon's (or Cosgrove Ornamental) Bridge No 65 arriving at 12:00 am. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 5.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.26 lock/miles per hour. Met two Wyvern hire boats coming down through Cosgove Lock as we waited to go up. Stopped 15 minutes for water above the lock then went on to moor just before the bridge.

Arrived at Kingfisher Marina had a pumpout (15) and moored opposite. A cool and cloudy day.

Set off after lunch and stopped on the new moorings below the lock. A cloudy day with a light shower in the afternoon.

Stopped 20 minutes for water at the bottom of the locks. Quite a few boats coming down the flight including Rodney and Wendy Evans on Scythia. Moored above the top lock and went to the Boat Inn for lunch (Roast Beef 6.95) each. A day of cloud and hazy sun.
