Sunday 1th May 2005

From to SnarestonTunnel arriving at 12:10 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 8 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.46 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 55 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 71 locks, averaging 3.1 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a water vole soon after we set off from Shenton. Moored before the tunnel and went to the Globe for lunch (2 courses 6.95 each) as good as always.

From SnarestonTunnel to Head of navigation arriving at 2:50 pm. The time taken was 20 minutes. 0.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.25 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 55 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 71 locks, averaging 3.08 lock/miles per hour.

Came up to the winding point and Beryl dumped the rubbish while I tried to wind the boat. Succeeded after two attempts - not helped by thr wind and the manoeuvres of another boat.

From Head of navigation to SnarestonTunnel arriving at 3:20 pm. The time taken was 30 minutes. 0.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 56 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 71 locks, averaging 3.05 lock/miles per hour.

Came back through the tunnel and moored on the first open stretch past the cutting. A dry day with cloud and some sunny intervals.

Stopped 35 minutes for water at Market Bosworth where we filled our tank and that of a new boat out for its first run - without a BW key. Saw a water vole.Moored past Sutton Wharf Bridge. A mostly sunny morning but heavy showers this afternoon.

A wet trip down to the Lime Kilns Inn where we moored and had lunch.

A drier trip down the rest of the Ashby and along the Coventry Canal with some sunny intervals. Moored past the bridge in front of Caraway - a narrowboat we have moored next to on several occasions since we left Braunston.

Stopped at Atherstone and went shopping, including our weekly shop at Somerfield. In the afternoon Beryl went to the Hairdresser's.

From Atherstone Top Lock No 1 to Atherstone Lock No 11 arriving at 5:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 0 minutes. 2 miles and 11 locks, averaging 6.5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 69 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 82 locks, averaging 2.64 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the locks, I went ahead on the bike while Beryl took the boat. Moored just beyond the bottom lock mooring. A cooler start to the day but warmer with some sun in the afternoon.

Thursday 5th May 2005

From Atherstone Lock No 11 to Amington (Bridge 66) arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 5.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 70 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 82 locks, averaging 2.57 lock/miles per hour.

Set off from the bottom of the Atherstone flight and stopped 20 minutes for water at Bradley Green Bridge. Came on to Alvecote where we got a pumpout (12). This took 55 minutes as we had to wait for a couple of Canaltime boats to finish before we could start. Moored by the pipe bridge before Bridge 63. A cool start to the daybut warmer with some sunshine in the afternoon.

Friday 6th May 2005

From Amington (Bridge 66) to Hopwas arriving at 11:10 am. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 5.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.32 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 73 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 84 locks, averaging 2.51 lock/miles per hour.

Glascote locks were in our favour and one boat arrived to come up as we were going down. Had our first sighting of this years young Canada Geese just past Fazeley Junction. Moored outside the Tame Otter, where we had lunch. After lunch we walked up the towpath and took some photos. A mostly cool and cloudy day with some sunny periods.

Sunday 8th May 2005

From Hopwas to Fradley Junction arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 8.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 76 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 84 locks, averaging 2.42 lock/miles per hour.

After spending two days at Hopwas while the oil leak was sorted out we had Suday Lunch at the Red Lion (8.50 each for two courses) and left for Fradley. Stopped on the last visitor mooring before the junction and filled with water. A cool day of sunshine, cloud and showers.

Monday 9th May 2005

From Fradley Junction to Rugeley Bridge No 66 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 7.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.08 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 79 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 87 locks, averaging 2.35 lock/miles per hour.

Followed a Canaltime boat up the Fradley Locks. Stopped for shopping at Rugeley. Had lunch in Morrison's.

From Rugeley Bridge No 66 to Great Haywood Junction arriving at 3:55 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 81 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 89 locks, averaging 2.32 lock/miles per hour.

Came up to Great Haywood and moored between the lock and the junction. Went to the farm shop and bought a couple of items. Another day of sunshine and showers.

Tuesday 10th May 2005

From Great Haywood Junction to Acton Bridge No 93 arriving at 12:00 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 7 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 84 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 91 locks, averaging 2.26 lock/miles per hour.

Came down to moor opposite the hotel at Acton Moat Bridge for lunch. After lunch I replaced the "Rediline" alternator belt which broke this morning.

From Acton Bridge No 93 to Penkridge Lock No 38 arriving at 2:35 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 3 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 86 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 94 locks, averaging 2.25 lock/miles per hour.

Pass the hotel boats Oak and Ash on the way to Penkridge. Moored just before the lock - the pound was a bit low - and went to collect the post. A dry day with sunshine and cloud.

From Penkridge Lock No 38 to Gailey Lock No 32 arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 2.75 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.18 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 88 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 101 locks, averaging 2.27 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping at the Penkridge Co-op and had lunch on the boat. Stopped 25 minutes for water (and ice-cream) at Gaily then moored on the visitor moorings. A sunny day.

Thursday 12th May 2005

From Gailey Lock No 32 to Autherley Junction arriving at 12:05 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 7.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.82 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 91 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 101 locks, averaging 2.2 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at Haterton Junction for 20 minutes for a pumpout (12). Had to wait at the Autherley while one boat came out of the stop lock and turned round to go back in and another boat came back through.

Stopped on a short run of piling opposite the farm past Bridge number 6 for lunch.

Moored below the lock and before the bridge. A sunny day, cool in the morning and with some clouds in the afternoon.

From Wheaton Aston Lock No 2 to Gnosall Bridge No 35 arriving at 11:05 am. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 5.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.86 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 95 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 103 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 15 minutes ar Wheaton Aston to fill up with diesel (97.8 litres @ 32.5p = 31.79) andthen went on to Gnosall where we stopped for 25 minutes to fill with water. Utopian passed us while we were moored.

From Gnosall Bridge No 35 to Market Drayton Bridge No 62 arriving at 4:20 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 50 minutes. 13.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.85 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 100 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 108 locks, averaging 2.07 lock/miles per hour.

Had lunch on the move and came down to Market Drayton where we went shopping at Morrison's (was Safeway last year). A mainly sunny day with a chill wind in exposed places, e.g. when crossing embankments.

Saturday 14th May 2005

From Market Drayton Bridge No 62 to Audlem Lock No 14 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 5 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 103 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 115 locks, averaging 2.07 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the Adderley locks behind two Anglo Welsh boats crewed by pople in fancy dress - they included Batman, Scooby Doo, Elvis, a nun and the Pope. Stopped after Audlem second lock and walked down to the Shroppie Fly for lunch.

From Audlem Lock No 14 to Audlem Lock No 24 arriving at 3:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 1.12 miles and 10 locks, averaging 7.41 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 105 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 125 locks, averaging 2.14 lock/miles per hour.

Came down to moor outside the Shroppie Fly as we need to have road access for Foxton Boats wo should be coming tomorrow as I discovered this morning that we still have an oil leak. A dry sunny day.

Sunday 15th May 2005

From Audlem Lock No 24 to Nantwich Basin arriving at 5:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 6.12 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.81 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 108 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 130 locks, averaging 2.13 lock/miles per hour.

Foxton boats rang to say they would come tomorrow but we stayed at Audlem for the morning and had lunch at the Bridge (8.75 each for two courses). Stopped 15 minutes outside the Shroppie Fly to fill with water. Moored just past Marsh Lane Bridge. A sunny day.

Monday 16th May 2005

From Nantwich Basin to Swanley Lock No 6 arriving at 4:05 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 4.37 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 110 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 136 locks, averaging 2.13 lock/miles per hour.

Paul from Foxton Boats came to fix the oil leak, which turned out to be a fuel leak. After lunch we went on to Nantwich where we dumped the rubbish. Turned on to the Llangollen and mored above Swanley Top Lock. A dull cool day with some light showers.

Tuesday 17th May 2005

From Swanley Lock No 6 to Quoisley Lock No 11 arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 7.37 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.53 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 114 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 141 locks, averaging 2.11 lock/miles per hour.

Cleared all the leaked fuel out of the engine compartment before setting off this morning. Moored a little way before Willymoor Lock and went to the pub for lunch.

From Quoisley Lock No 11 to New Mills Lift Bridge No 31 arriving at 5:35 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 3.5 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.73 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 117 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 149 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

Arrived at the bottom of the Grindley Brook staircase locks just after the third boat had gone up so we had to wait for them to clear the flight and for three boats to come down before we could go through. Filled in the time by eating icecream and helping with the locks. Stopped 20 minutes for water above the locks. Moored at the end of the Whitchurch Arm. A mostly sunny day.

Wednesday 18th May 2005

From New Mills Lift Bridge No 31 to Prees Branch Junction arriving at 4:05 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 5.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.59 lock/miles per hour. Went shopping at Tesco in Whitchurch this morning and got the bus back to the mooring. After lunch we came up past the Prees Branch Junction to moor. A sunny morning but cloudy and cool in the afternoon.

Thursday 19th May 2005

From Prees Branch Junction to Frankton Junction arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 10 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.61 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 123 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 149 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 25 minutes for water at Ellesmere Junction. Stopped for lunch just past Frankton Junction.

From Frankton Junction to Glenrid Bridge No 19 arriving at 5:05 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 6.25 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.91 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 126 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 151 locks, averaging 1.99 lock/miles per hour.

Boats were coming down the New Marton locks as we went up and we passed many other boats today, as is to be expected on the Llangollen Canal. Moored just before the bridge and went to the Poacher's Pocket for dinner (Sirlion Steak 8.25, Gammon Steak 5.50). A mostly cloudy day but only a few spots of rain.

Friday 20th May 2005

From Glenrid Bridge No 19 to Siambr Bridge No 45 arriving at 1:20 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 25 minutes. 9 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.04 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 130 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 151 locks, averaging 1.92 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for 25 minutes at Chirk Marina for a pump out (15). Had to push hard against the flow in the narrows and especially through the tunnels. Moored in the new basin at Llangollen (10 for two nights). Went round the town in the afternoon. A showery morning but dry in the afternoon.Siambr Bridge No 45:  - 21st May 2005.

From Siambr Bridge No 45 to Glenrid Bridge No 19 arriving at 1:30 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 10 minutes. 9 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.16 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 134 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 151 locks, averaging 1.86 lock/miles per hour.

Having spent two nights in Llangollen we set off back down the canal. Met a lot of boats coming up through the narrows and had to wait a little while at each of the tunnels. Moored at the Poacher's Pocket again, which we went to for Sunday lunch.. A day of sunshine and showers.

From Glenrid Bridge No 19 to Frankton Junction arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 6.25 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 137 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 153 locks, averaging 1.84 lock/miles per hour.

New Marton Locks were busy with boats waiting to come up and down. Moored just before the junction. Another day of sunshine and showers.

Stopped for water at the BW Ellesmere depot but had to wait 10 minutes before there was space for us to moor and another 35 minutes for the tank to fill. We went to the end of the Ellesmere arm to turn then moored further up the arm. Had lunch on the boat. A wet morning but drier and sunnier in the afternoon.

From Ellesmere Branch Junction to Frankton Junction arriving at 12:05 am. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 3.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.53 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 140 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 153 locks, averaging 1.8 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping in Ellesmere before setting off back to Frankton to go down the Montgomery Canal. Moored just before the lock ready to go down when the locks were opened at 14.30.

From Frankton Junction to Redwith arriving at 5:35 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 7.37 miles and 8 locks, averaging 4.98 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 143 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 161 locks, averaging 1.82 lock/miles per hour.

We were the first of four boats coming down the locks and had a smooth journey, meeting several boats coming the opposite way. Came right to the end through the lift bridge to turn at the winding hole.

Came back through the lift bridge to moor opposite the Navigation Inn. Walked up to look at the village then had dinner at the Navigation Bistro. A cloudy morning and a sunny afternoon.

A cloudy morning but it was sunny when we set off after lunch to make our trip back from Maesbury. Stopped 25 minutes for water on the Weston Arm and then went on to moor below the lock to await its openning at 9.30 a.m. tomorrow.

Came up the locks passing two boats coming down and went on to Ellesmere to post a letter and to do some shopping. Had lunch on the boat.

Met another boat as we were coming out of the tunnel and a couple more at bridges. Saw a knigfisher a little way before Colemere. Moored a few hundred yards from the junction. A warm dry day with sunny periods.

From Prees Branch Junction to Grindley Brook Lock No 19 (Top of staircase) arriving at 11:30 am. The time taken was 2 hours 0 minutes. 6.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.25 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 152 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 169 locks, averaging 1.76 lock/miles per hour.

A windy and mostly cloudy day for our trip down to Whitchurch. We moored a little way before the locks and went down to the lock shop to buy a pumpout card 6.30.

Sunday 29th May 2005

From Grindley Brook Lock No 19 (Top of staircase) to Wrenbury Lift Bridge No 20 arriving at 11:30 am. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 6.25 miles and 10 locks, averaging 4.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 156 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 179 locks, averaging 1.79 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped to fill with water (25 minutes) and the have a pumpout (15 minutes) above Grindley Brook locks. We were able to go straight down the locks and met a lot of boats coming up the canal this morning. Stopped just before the lift bridge and went to the village shop. Had lunch at the Dusty Miller (13.45 each for two courses). A calmer day, mostly sunny.

Had to stop for 10 minutes soon after setting off due to engine overheating - the water needed topping up but I don't know why. Stopped for lunch just past the bridge.

The locks were busy and we had to wait for other boat at every one. Did not stop at the junction.

From Nantwich Basin to Audlem Bottom Lock No 27 arriving at 5:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 5.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.32 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 164 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 190 locks, averaging 1.77 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping in Nantwich in the morning. Safeway was closed - being converted to a Morrison's so we went to Somerfield. Collected the post and had lunch on the boat. After lunch I checked the engine water level and found we still had a leak. Spent 55 minutes banking the boat up to the marina, getting it fixed (just a loose bolt) and coming back to our original postion. Continued on to moor below the bottom lock. A mostly sunny day.
