From to Hanbury Junction arriving at 11:10 am. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 2.75 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.2 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 168 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 275 locks, averaging 2.22 lock/miles per hour.

A slow progress down the locks with boats in font and behind. Moored opposite Hanbury Wharf to do an interview for a More Than a Mooring article. Had lunch at the Eagle & Sun (Lasagne 5.75 each).

Moored a little way past Blackpole Lock. A day of cloud, sunshine and a couple of showers.

From Blackpole Lock No 9 to Sidbury Lock No 3 arriving at 11:00 am. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 2.75 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 173 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 289 locks, averaging 2.24 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just below the lock and went shopping at Sainsbury's before lunch. After lunch Beryl and I went off on our separate shopping trips. Another showery day with some sunny intervals.

Sunday 4th July 2004

From Sidbury Lock No 3 to Worcester Quay arriving at 10:40 am. The time taken was 1 hour 10 minutes. 1.12 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 175 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 291 locks, averaging 2.23 lock/miles per hour.

Moved a little way down the canal to fill with water (30 minutes) then went through the locks. Shared the second lock with Fosse, who had waited for us. Moored near the race course against the overgrown bank. A day of sunshine and cloud with one shower.

Monday 5th July 2004

From Worcester Quay to Stourport Junction arriving at 12:00 am. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 12.37 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.85 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 178 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 294 locks, averaging 2.21 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher above Holt Lock. Met a few narrowboats coming downsteam and shared Lincombe Lock with a Viking boat. Moored on the river just before the narrowlocks. Had lunch and took some photgraphs in the afternoon. A day of sunshine and cloud.

Tuesday 6th July 2004

From Stourport Junction to Bullock Lane Bridge No 9 arriving at 11:40 am. The time taken was 1 hour 40 minutes. 1.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.9 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 179 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 299 locks, averaging 2.22 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the locks and moored on the water aon pumpout below York Street Lock. Spent 30 minutes on filling with water and getting a pumpout (5) and got some more Elsan Blue in the chandlery. Moored for lunch a little way past the bridge. In the afternoon I walked into Kidderminster to pickup the post. A warm and sunny day.

Wednesday 7th July 2004

From Bullock Lane Bridge No 9 to Caldwall Hall Bridge No 15 arriving at 10:45 am. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 2.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 181 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 301 locks, averaging 2.21 lock/miles per hour.

Had to wait behind two boats at Falling Sands Lock and had trouble getting one of the bottom gates at Caldwall Lock to open properly. We also picked up some think plastic sheeting round the prop here. We moored outside Tescos. As we came into moor we hit an underwater obstruction so moored a little further on. Someone from Tescos came out looking for submerged trollys but had no means of finding them. I pulled out five Tesco trollies with the boat hook that Tesco staff took away. Did our shopping before lunch. A sunny morning but a cloudy and windy afternoon.

Thursday 8th July 2004

From Caldwall Hall Bridge No 15 to Wolverley Court Lock No 7 arriving at 4:35 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 1.62 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.72 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 183 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 303 locks, averaging 2.2 lock/miles per hour.

Met Dad at the station at 14.30 and got a taxi back to the boat. Moored beforeWolverley Lock. A cool cloudy day with rain in the morning.

Friday 9th July 2004

From Wolverley Court Lock No 7 to Hyde Lock No 12 arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 5.37 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.11 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 186 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 308 locks, averaging 2.19 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 25 minutes for water at Kinver. Moored just past the lock for lunch.

From Hyde Lock No 12 to Hinksford Lock No 17 arriving at 4:15 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 5.25 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 189 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 313 locks, averaging 2.18 lock/miles per hour.

Moored above the lock. A mainly sunny day but with some cloud and cool breezes.

Saturday 10th July 2004

From Hinksford Lock No 17 to Bratch Locks Nos 23, 24 and 25 arriving at 11:20 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 2.62 miles and 8 locks, averaging 4.11 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 191 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 321 locks, averaging 2.2 lock/miles per hour.

Met a boat coming down Botterham double lock as we were waiting to go up and had to wait for two boat to come down Bratch before we could enter. A sudden shower as we left Bratch caused us to stop for an eary lunch.

From Bratch Locks Nos 23, 24 and 25 to Brewood Bridge No 14 arriving at 5:35 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 5 minutes. 11.75 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.49 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 196 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 327 locks, averaging 2.17 lock/miles per hour.

Had a good run of the locks but found all the visitor moorings before Brewood Bridge were occupied. Found a mooring the other side of the bridge (almost as far as Country Wide Cruisers). Had dinner at the Admiral Rodney - very good - Dad paid. A sunny start to the day but increasing cloud and some showers in the afternoon.

Sunday 11th July 2004

From Brewood Bridge No 14 to Gnosall Bridge No 35 arriving at 11:15 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 8 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.27 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 199 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 328 locks, averaging 2.14 lock/miles per hour.

Wheaton Aston Lock was ready for us and we went straight in. Saw a kingfisher at High Onn. Mooored just past the water point and then filled with water. The Navigation was fully booked for food so we went to the Boat for lunch.

From Gnosall Bridge No 35 to Goldstone Bridge No 55 arriving at 5:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 10 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 202 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 328 locks, averaging 2.11 lock/miles per hour.

All the moorings by the bridge were taken so we came on to moor on some piling a little further on. A dry cloudy day with some patches of sun.

Monday 12th July 2004

From Goldstone Bridge No 55 to Market Drayton Bridge No 62 arriving at 10:30 am. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 3.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.7 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 204 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 333 locks, averaging 2.11 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Woodeaves Cutting and down Tyrley Locks. Moored and went into town for shopping at Safeways.

From Market Drayton Bridge No 62 to Adderley Top Lock No 8 arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 55 minutes. 3.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.55 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 205 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 333 locks, averaging 2.11 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 15 minutes for diesel at Ted's Boatyard (144.62 litres @ 24.9p = 36). Moored for lunch after Betton Wood Bridge No 66.

From Adderley Top Lock No 8 to Audlem Lock No 24 arriving at 4:35 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 2.87 miles and 16 locks, averaging 6.86 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 208 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 349 locks, averaging 2.15 lock/miles per hour.

Made good progress through the locks and moored above lock 24 (12 according to the number on the gate). Not a very good mooring as we get trapped on a ledge. Had dinner at the Shroppie Fly (Steak and Mushroom Pie and Broccoli and Chicken Bake 6.95 each). A mostly clody day with a few spots of rain but sunny this evening.

Tuesday 13th July 2004

From Audlem Lock No 24 to Nantwich Basin arriving at 1:50 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 6.12 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.18 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 211 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 354 locks, averaging 2.14 lock/miles per hour.

Stopperd 25 minutes for water by the Shroppie Fly.Stoped for an hour and 25 minutes on the emabankment just past the Natwich aqueduct for lunch. Moved down to the basin for a pumpout (10) and to get the toilet base renewed. A sunny day with some cloud.

Thursday 15th July 2004

From Nantwich Basin to Minshull Mill Bridge No 14 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 8.12 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.37 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 214 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 356 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

After spending Wednesday moored in Nantwich Basin I changed the front alternator belt before setting off. Stopped for lunch on the embankment with the view before the bridge.

From Minshull Mill Bridge No 14 to Wardle Lock No 4 arriving at 4:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 5.12 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 217 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 358 locks, averaging 2.1 lock/miles per hour.

After a very wet trip down the rest of the branch we stopped 25 minutes for water at the junction. Had to wait for three boats in front of us to get through Wardle Lock.

Shropshire Union - Middlewich Branch to Trent and Mersey Canal

Went shopping at Somerfield before setting off. Moored before bridge 182A for lunch. Saw Sadie and Fred on Straw Bear and Lynx just before we stopped.

From Bridge No 181 to Acton Bridge No 209 arriving at 4:45 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 8.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.87 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 223 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 362 locks, averaging 2.07 lock/miles per hour.

Followed a boat calle Duke through Barnton and Salterford tunnels. Stopped before the bridge and went to the Horns for dinner - not as good as the last time we were there. A cloudy and damp start to the day but drier and sunny later.

From Acton Bridge No 209 to Lumb Brook Underbridge arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 9.37 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.96 lock/miles per hour. Came through Dutton Stop Lock and followed another boat straight into the tunnel. Moored for lunch just past the Aqueduct.

From Lumb Brook Underbridge to Lymm Bridge No 23 arriving at 2:40 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 4.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.28 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 228 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 363 locks, averaging 2.03 lock/miles per hour.

Moored some way before the bridge, near the start of the moorings. A wet morning and early afternoon but the rain stopped after we moored and there was some sun later. Walked round Lymm with Dad to find a place for dinner and bought some wine. Went to a nice Italian place and we all had Duck and a sweet. Dad paid.

Sunday 18th July 2004

From Lymm Bridge No 23 to Castlefield Junction arriving at 11:55 am. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 13.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 231 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 363 locks, averaging 2 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 40 minutes for water past Agden Bridge. Moored at the junction and tried to contact Egerton Narrowboats about a pumpout but no luck.

From Castlefield Junction to Ducie Street Junction arriving at 4:35 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 1.25 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.32 lock/miles per hour. Came up the locks with Merlin, behind Midnight and Barefoot (something?) and a single handed boat in front of them. Moored with Merlin at the top. A dry day with some sunshine.

Monday 19th July 2004

From Ducie Street Junction to Failsworth Lock No 65 arriving at 2:10 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 55 minutes. 3.87 miles and 18 locks, averaging 3.7 lock/miles per hour. Set off up the locks with Merlin. Picked up a lot of rubbish on the prop which we both had to clear twice. Stopped for lunch above the lock.

From Failsworth Lock No 65 to Kay Lane Lock No 64 arriving at 4:30 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 2.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.34 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 242 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 391 locks, averaging 2.03 lock/miles per hour.

Peter and Judy on Merlin were waiting for us at Grimshaw Lane Lift Bridge. We came up to moor near the Rose of Lancaster pub.

Tuesday 20th July 2004

From Kay Lane Lock No 64 to Littleborugh Lower Lock No 48 arriving at 2:30 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 35 minutes. 9.37 miles and 16 locks, averaging 4.54 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 247 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 407 locks, averaging 2.05 lock/miles per hour.

A good trip up the locks with Peter and Judy on Merlin. Stopped below the lock for lunch and shopping.

From Littleborugh Lower Lock No 48 to Bent House Lock No 46 arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 35 minutes. 0.37 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.06 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 248 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 409 locks, averaging 2.05 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the two locks to the sanitary station and was lent a hand operated pumpout set by a boat owner there. Filled with water. Had drinks on the boat with Peter and Judy. A sunny start to the day but more cloudy in the afternoon.

Wednesday 21st July 2004

From Bent House Lock No 46 to Warland Upper Lock No 35 arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 2.12 miles and 11 locks, averaging 3.28 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 252 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 420 locks, averaging 2.06 lock/miles per hour.

Made a good start up the locks but soon got held up by single locks (i.e. locks where two narrowboats would not fit side by side due to distortions of the lock wall) and low pounds. The lock keeper tied the boat out side one of the locks and the pound went down so much that the rope could not be untied and we had to cut it. very low pounds near the summit. Moored below Lock 36 and went to the pub with Peter and Judy for lunch and afterwards had coffee on their boat. A day of sunshine and cloud.

From Warland Upper Lock No 35 to Travis Mill Lock No 28 arriving at 1:05 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 1.37 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 254 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 427 locks, averaging 2.07 lock/miles per hour.

After seeing Dad off at Walsden station we walked back to the boat along the canal. Set off down the canal passing three narrowboats (including Chesterton) and a cruiser who were coming up. Stopped before the lock and went to the Cross Keys for lunch (lasagne 5.25 each - very good).

From Travis Mill Lock No 28 to Lob Mill Lock No 16 arriving at 5:50 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 2.87 miles and 12 locks, averaging 4.15 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 257 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 439 locks, averaging 2.09 lock/miles per hour.

Passed one narrowboat coming up the canal this afternoon. Moored before the lock. A sunny morning and a more cloudy afternoon.

Friday 23rd July 2004

From Lob Mill Lock No 16 to Mayroyd Mill Lock No 8 arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 3.37 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.69 lock/miles per hour. Stopped 15 minutes for Pumpout (15) and gas (14.99) at Pickwell & Arnold. Saw Housemartin from Peterborough coming up from Callis Lock. Moored by the nursery and went to the White Lion for lunch (Cumberland Sausage 4.95, Haddock 6.25). Went shopping at the Co-op. A warm day of sunshine and cloud.

From Mayroyd Mill Lock No 8 to Brearley Upper Lock No 6 arriving at 5:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 2.12 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.8 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 262 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 449 locks, averaging 2.1 lock/miles per hour.

Angela and Graeme came to see us after lunch and we walked up to the Stubbing Wharf pub. When they left we came up to Mytholmroyd and went to the Shoulder of Mutton for dinner (Haddock and Filled Yorkshire Pudding 3.99 each, Cheesecake 2.50 each). A mostly cloudy day.

Did not set off until 11.30 as it was raining. Went through the two Brearley locks with Crewe, a small Northwich. Saw a kingfisher at Luddenden Foot. Came down through Tuel Lane and the other two locks by ourselves. Stopped 30 minutes for water before mooring on the oposite side of the basin. Did the 8342 hour service in the morning and changed all the filters and the gearbox oil. Ordered some more belts from Beta Marine. Came up the Huddersfield canal to moor above Lock 5. A dry but cloudy day.

From Reading Lock No 6 to Aspley Basin and Junction arriving at 10:50 am. The time taken was 1 hour 40 minutes. 1.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.45 lock/miles per hour. Met the Aspley Marina Day boat coming down to the top lock as we went up. Locomotive bridge is now electrically operated. Moored outside Sainsbury's and did our shopping then went back in for lunch. In the afternoon I picked up my belts fromBeta Marine at the Post Office. A warm but mostly cloudy day.

Strated off at 8.15 and stopped 30 minutes for water and pumpout (6.50) at Aspley Basin. When we got to the first lock we found Glad All Over in the lock and Butterfly waiting, both unable to move due to low water in the next pound. We eventually got into the lock at 11.30 but were delayed for some time above the lock by getting stuck in the narrows before the first tunnel. There were several more delays before we got to our night mooring above lock 17E. We walked into Slaithwaite and had dinner at the Monsoon Tandoori Restaurant. A mostly sunny day.

From Can Lock No 18 E to Slaithwaite arriving at 10:40 am. The time taken was 1 hour 25 minutes. 1 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.24 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 286 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 499 locks, averaging 2.09 lock/miles per hour.

Came up to moor above Lock 22E. Went out to lunch with Angela and Graeme by car.

From Slaithwaite to Pig Tail Lock No 32 E arriving at 7:50 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 1.25 miles and 9 locks, averaging 2.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 290 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 508 locks, averaging 2.09 lock/miles per hour.

A fairly slow journey up the locks due to having to wait for some boats coming down to bring water to a low pound and some more low pounds farther up. Moored below the lock to wait for BW to let us upto the summit tomorrow. A cloudy morning with a light shower but hot and sunny in the afternoon.
