Friday 1th August 2003

From to Bath Old Bridge arriving at 10:30 am. The time taken was 1 hour 0 minutes. 2.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 469 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 483 locks, averaging 1.24 lock/miles per hour.

Bought two pumpout cards (12) at Bath Marina. Saw two kingfishers above Weston Lock. Moored on the spot nearest Sainsbury's and went shopping. In the afternoon we moved to moor at Pultney Weir (4.90). A cloudy day with a few light showers.

Sunday 3th August 2003

From Bath Old Bridge to Murhill Quarry arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 7.5 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.38 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 473 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 489 locks, averaging 1.24 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher as I waited for Bath bottom lock to be ready. Came up the Bath locks by ourselves but were helped by the "Towpath Ranger". Stopped for 25 minutes at Dundas Aqueduct for water and pumpout, using one of the cards I bought at Bath Marina. Stopped for lunch just after Murhill Wharf.

From Murhill Quarry to Hilperton Bridge (B3105) arriving at 4:15 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 5 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 475 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 490 locks, averaging 1.24 lock/miles per hour.

Shared Bradford on Avon Lock with a cruiser. Moored just after Ladydown Bridge No 169. A hot sunny day.

Monday 4th August 2003

From Hilperton Bridge (B3105) to Semington Top Lock No 16 arriving at 1:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 2.62 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.22 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 477 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 492 locks, averaging 1.24 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 2 hour 20 minutes at Hillperton Wharf while I took pictures and gathered information for an article. Also bought 50 litres of diesel at 35p a litre. moved on throughthe Semington locks and moored just after Newton Swing Bridge No 158.

From Semington Top Lock No 16 to Devizes Bottom Lock No 22 arriving at 4:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 4.87 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.74 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 480 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 497 locks, averaging 1.24 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the locks with the narrowboat Rallentando from the river Lee. Moored on the Sumerham Aqueduct just before the locks. A hot sunny day.

Tuesday 5th August 2003

From Devizes Bottom Lock No 22 to Devizes Top Lock No 50 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 5 hours 25 minutes. 2 miles and 29 locks, averaging 5.72 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 485 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 526 locks, averaging 1.29 lock/miles per hour.

Came up all the locks by ourselves. Met several boats going down. Went to lunch at the Bear (Roast Lanb 4.95, Penne Pasta 4.75) then shopping at Sainsbury's. Some cloud and a breeze in the morning but full sun in the afternoon and hot all day.

Thursday 7th August 2003

From Devizes Top Lock No 50 to Pewsey Wharf arriving at 1:20 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 30 minutes. 12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 489 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 526 locks, averaging 1.28 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 25 minutes for water at Pewsey Wharf then moved down to the moorings. Had lunch at the French Horn.

From Pewsey Wharf to Savernake Tunnel (East End) arriving at 6:05 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 5.37 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.41 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 492 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 530 locks, averaging 1.28 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher before Wootton Rivers. Came up the locks and through the tunnel. Met three boats in the tunnel. Moored just past the tunnel. Another hot day.

Friday 8th August 2003

From Savernake Tunnel (East End) to Great Bedwyn Church Lock No 64 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 3.25 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.77 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 495 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 539 locks, averaging 1.29 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the locks with Rallentando and moored at Great Bedwyn. Walked round the village before we had lunch on the boat.

From Great Bedwyn Church Lock No 64 to Hungerford Lock No 74 arriving at 6:35 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 5.25 miles and 10 locks, averaging 3.81 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 499 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 549 locks, averaging 1.3 lock/miles per hour.

Shared several of the locks with Thames Crusader, a hire narrowboat from Bridge Boats in Reading. Moored just before Hungerford Bridge. A Hot sunny day.

Saturday 9th August 2003

From Hungerford Lock No 74 to Kintbury Lock No 78 arriving at 11:10 am. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 3 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.79 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 501 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 552 locks, averaging 1.3 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 30 minutes for water at Hungerford. Moored at Kintbury, look aroud the village and had lunch at the Dundas Arms.

From Kintbury Lock No 78 to Greenham Lock No 86 arriving at 5:10 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 6.5 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 505 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 560 locks, averaging 1.31 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 10 minutes for a pumpout above Kintbury Lock (used the second card I bought at Bath Marina). Shared some of the locks with Swordfish from Keynsham. Came through Newbury Lock with Lady River Mouse. Another very hot day.

Sunday 10th August 2003

From Greenham Lock No 86 to Midgham Lock No 92 arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 4.25 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.32 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 508 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 566 locks, averaging 1.31 lock/miles per hour.

Wet shopping with Beryl at Sainsbury's then went round the town with Dad and Beryl and had lunch at the Queen's Hotel. Didn't have to open either of the swing bridges as they had been commandeered by groups of youths who opened them. At Widemead Lock a group of girls were swimming and at Monkey Marsh Lock there were boys and girls swimming. Moored just above the lock. A hot sunny day with a breeze later in the day.

Monday 11th August 2003

From Midgham Lock No 92 to Woolhampton Mill Lock No 94 arriving at 10:50 am. The time taken was 1 hour 25 minutes. 1.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.35 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 510 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 569 locks, averaging 1.31 lock/miles per hour.

Eliza Wilham and Harry followed us through the locks and we shared Heals and Woolhampton locks with Hare from Kegworth. Moored just past the swing bridge and had lunch at the Row Barge.

From Woolhampton Mill Lock No 94 to Aldermaston Lock No 95 arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 0 minutes. 1.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 511 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 570 locks, averaging 1.31 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the lock with Hazel, a 70 foot boat from Norbury Junction. Stopped 25 mnutes for water between the lock and the lift bridge. Beryl found that when she closed the lift bridge the barriers would not rise. This was eventually sorted out by a man from Reading Marine and the engineer was called out. We moored just before Reading Marine then moved down to their moorings when one of the hire boats left. Another hot day.

Tuesday 12th August 2003

From Aldermaston Lock No 95 to Burghfield Village Road Bridge arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 6.75 miles and 8 locks, averaging 4.54 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 514 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 578 locks, averaging 1.32 lock/miles per hour.

Went through the locks with Watersnail from Stourbridge. Stopped outside the Cunning Man for lunch. The pub has been rebuilt and is due to reopen soon.

From Burghfield Village Road Bridge to High Bridge, Reading arriving at 3:20 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 3.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 516 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 581 locks, averaging 1.32 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the locks by ourselves and moored next to the Prison. Fragil and several other boats were moored there. Did some shopping then had dinner at Dino's. Another hot day.

Wednesday 13th August 2003

From High Bridge, Reading to River Kennet Junction arriving at 1:35 pm. The time taken was 35 minutes. 0.5 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 516 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 582 locks, averaging 1.32 lock/miles per hour.

Aftr spending the morning in Reading we went down through Blakes Lock and moored at Tesco's to do our shopping.

From River Kennet Junction to Sonning Bridge arriving at 3:30 pm. The time taken was 50 minutes. 2.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.9 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 517 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 583 locks, averaging 1.32 lock/miles per hour.

Shared Sonning Lock with two cruisers. Moored below the bridge. Had dinner at the Bull, very good but quite pricey for an order at the bar meal. A hot sunny day.

Thursday 14th August 2003

From Sonning Bridge to Henley Bridge arriving at 10:55 am. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 6.12 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.24 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 519 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 585 locks, averaging 1.32 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a knigfisher below Sonning and another at Henley. Found that the municipal mooring charges at Henley had been changed to 7 per 9 metres so we moored below the bridge. Walked round the town then had lunch on the boat.

From Henley Bridge to Cookham Lock arriving at 5:55 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 30 minutes. 12.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 523 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 590 locks, averaging 1.32 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 20 minutes for water above Hurley Lock. No moorings available at Marlow (as usual) so we came on to Cookham. Went up and down but could not find a place to moor so came on through the lock and moored on one of the islands in Cliveden Reach. A sunny day but a cooling breeze at times.

Friday 15th August 2003

From Cookham Lock to Monkey Island arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 4.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.19 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 526 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 592 locks, averaging 1.31 lock/miles per hour.

Queues at all the locks today. Moored for lunch just before the racecourse marina moorings. Saw Florian at Maidenhead.

From Monkey Island to Windsor Railway Viaduct arriving at 2:40 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 15 minutes. 4.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.1 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 528 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 593 locks, averaging 1.31 lock/miles per hour.

Another big queue at Boveney Lock. Stopped for a pumpout (5) beow the lock. Backed up the backwater at Windsor to moor. Timeless and Firecrest, both from Peterboough, were moored nearby. Went round Windsor Castle and had dinner at Ye Harte & ... Hotel. A warm sunny day.

Saturday 16th August 2003

From Windsor Railway Viaduct to The Bells of Ouseley arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 4.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.24 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 530 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 595 locks, averaging 1.31 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping in Windsor before setting off. Stopped for lunch on the EA moorings before Bell Weir Lock.

From The Bells of Ouseley to Chertsey Bridge arriving at 4:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 7 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 532 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 598 locks, averaging 1.31 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for 15 minutes at the Harris Boatyard for diesel (182.67litres at 29p = 53) then a further 15 minutes below Chertsey Lock for water. Moored on the EA moorings half a mile below the bridge. A warm day with sunshine and cloud.

Sunday 17th August 2003

From Chertsey Bridge to Staines Bridge arriving at 11:00 am. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 4 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.79 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 534 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 600 locks, averaging 1.31 lock/miles per hour.

No queuing for locks today. Moored before the bridge and did some shopping in Sainsbury's. Had lunch at the Swan.

From Staines Bridge to Monkey Island arriving at 5:20 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 11.87 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 537 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 604 locks, averaging 1.31 lock/miles per hour.

Saw some Ring-necked Parakeets near Victoria Bridge. Rosemary rang while we were in Boveney Lock and I asked her to send the post to Reading. Moored just past the EA moorings and round the bend - the same place as when we came down. A mostly sunny day with some clouds.

Monday 18th August 2003

From Monkey Island to Cookham Bridge arriving at 11:20 am. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 5.12 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 540 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 607 locks, averaging 1.31 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher shortly after setting off and another just before Bray Lock. Moored on the visitor moorings (5) and went round the church, Stanley Spencer Gallery and village before lunch. Had dinner at Bel Dragon. A warm day with some sunshine in the morning and a cloudy afternoon.

Tuesday 19th August 2003

From Cookham Bridge to Temple Island arriving at 1:30 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 10.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.85 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 543 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 611 locks, averaging 1.31 lock/miles per hour.

Saw two kingfishers juus past Bourne End and another sitting on the piling opposite Hambleden Lock moorings. Stopped for 25 minutes for water above Hurley Lock.Moored for lunch at Remenham.

Stopped on the EA moorings about a mile before the bridge. A warm day with sunshine and cloud.

Stopped 20 minutes for water above Shiplake Lock. Moored by Reading Goal and went to the Station to see Dad off on the train. Had Lunch at Bella Pasta. Have a Dutch Barge called Pubcrawler moored alongside us tonight. A day of sunshine and cloud.

Thursday 21st August 2003

From High Bridge, Reading to Gatehampton Railway Bridge arriving at 2:35 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 50 minutes. 10.62 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.02 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 552 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 619 locks, averaging 1.3 lock/miles per hour.

Set off at 8.30 and worked Blakes Lock ourselves. Waited 1 hour 15 minutes at Better Boating for a pumpout (9) and water (1). Long queues at all three locks. Moored at the Festival next to Penny Blue, a kingsground boat. A cloudy day with some sunny periods.

Tuesday 26th August 2003

From Gatehampton Railway Bridge to River Kennet Junction arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 10.12 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.04 lock/miles per hour. Set off after four days at the IWA National Festival. Queues at Mapledurham and Caversham Locks. Saw a kingfisher before Reading Marine Services. Went shopping in Reading this morning and got Beryl some trainers and socks. Came back on the Thames through Blakes Lock. Saw kingfishers before Sonning and Shiplake locks. Spent 50 minutes waiting, having a pumpout (35) then filling with water. Had to queue at Shiplake Lock. Had lunch on the move. Moored before Medmenham Abbey (4). A day of sunshine and cloud.

Thursday 28th August 2003

Saw kingfishers at Bourne End Railway Bridge, Cookham Bridge, just past the Islands in Cliveden Reach and two before Boulter's Lock cut. Had to queue at Boulter's and Bray Locks. Had lunch on the move and moored close to the church before Boveney Lock. A mostly cloudy day with some light rain.

Friday 29th August 2003

From Monkey Island to Staines Bridge arriving at 12:00 am. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 11.87 miles and 4 locks, averaging 5.6 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 568 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 638 locks, averaging 1.3 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 15 minutes for water below Boveney Lock. Went through Bell Weir Lock with Rodney and Wendy Evans on Scythia and Neston, another Steve Hudson boat. Stopped on the EA moorings past the Swan. A wet morning but drier in the afternoon.

Saturday 30th August 2003

From Staines Bridge to Teddington Lock arriving at 3:05 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 30 minutes. 16.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.8 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 573 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 643 locks, averaging 1.3 lock/miles per hour.

Did some shopping in Staines town centre and at Sainsbury's before setting off. Saw Siberia at Penton Hook. No queing at the locks today. Had lunch on the move. Moored before the lock and Scythia and Neston came and moored alongside before going through the lock at 5pm. We are booked to go at 6pm tomorrow. A sunny day with a cool breeze.

Came down to Brentford with 4 other narrowboats. Saw two kingfishers after going through Thames Locks onto the Grand Union. Moored above the Gauging Locks. A mostly sunny day.
