Moored just after bridge 98 and went into town to collect the post then again later to post off replies to correspondence. Had lunch on the boat.

From Lancaster, Bridge No 98 to Hest Bank Bridge No 118 arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 40 minutes. 5.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.15 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 230 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 186 locks, averaging 1.24 lock/miles per hour.

Moored on the visitor moorings before bridge 117, which are rather shallow in many places so we had to moor out from the bank. Spoke to the people from Hunky Dory who told me there is a Safeway supermarket at Carnforth. A cloudy day with sunny intervals.

From Hest Bank Bridge No 118 to Tewitfield Bottom Lock (Closed) arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 7.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.66 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 233 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 186 locks, averaging 1.23 lock/miles per hour.

Came up to Carforth where we stopped 30 minutes for water before doing the final four miles to turn and moor before Old Turnpike Bridge No 138. A cloudy day with sunny periods and a few light showers.

From Tewitfield Bottom Lock (Closed) to Carnforth Bridge No 128 arriving at 10:15 am. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 4 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 234 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 186 locks, averaging 1.22 lock/miles per hour.

Came back to the Nuway Acorn boatyard for a pumpout (5) but we had a long wait for someone to come to do it and it took 55 minutes before we could leave. We crossed over the canal and moored by the filling station next to the Canal Turn pub. Went shopping at Safeway before lunch. After lunch we went into the town and looked in the bookshop and the railway station. A mostly cloudy day with a few light showers.

Thursday 5th June 2003

From Carnforth Bridge No 128 to Hest Bank Bridge No 118 arriving at 11:15 am. The time taken was 1 hour 25 minutes. 3.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.65 lock/miles per hour. Before setting off we backed up to the water point, the wind turning us around in the process. After filling with water we turned again and set off. Moored just past bridge 117. Went to the Hest Bank for dinner (Rainbow Trout, Pasta Bake and Rasberry Cheesecake 5.95 each for two courses.) A dry day with sunshine and cloud.

From Hest Bank Bridge No 118 to Scotforth Bridge No 91 arriving at 11:55 am. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 8.12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.87 lock/miles per hour. Passed quite a few boats this morning including Gilly Bee, Me & Mine and Advocet. Moored a little way before New Park Bridge No 89. A cloudy start to the day but some sunshine in the afternoon.

Saturday 7th June 2003

From Scotforth Bridge No 91 to Glasson Basin Lock No 7 arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 5.12 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 242 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 192 locks, averaging 1.21 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 20 minutes for water at Galgate then went down the Glasson Dock Branch. Shared locks 2 to 6 with the narrowboat Tenbridge from the Macclesfield Canal. Moored in the basin and after lunch we walked round the dock and then up to Lock 6. Beryl went back to the boat and I walked up to the junction and back. A mostly sunny day.

Monday 9th June 2003

From Glasson Basin Lock No 7 to Lodge Hill Junction arriving at 11:35 am. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 2.87 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 244 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 198 locks, averaging 1.22 lock/miles per hour.

Spent a wet and windy Sunday in Glasson Dock and did the 7516 hour service, changed the oil filter and the gearbox fluid. Today we set off up the arm going through all the locks by ourselves and passing the narrowboats Poppytime, Completely Foxed and Gill Thorrn coming down. Did not stop at the top.

From Lodge Hill Junction to Richmond Bridge No 80 arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 1 hour 15 minutes. 1.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.1 lock/miles per hour. Stopped for 25 minutes to fill with water just before the moorings at Garstang. Went into town to pay-in a cheque and then went to Safeway's. A dry day of sunshine and cloud.

Tuesday 10th June 2003

From Garstang to Kirkham Bridge No 26 arriving at 1:05 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 45 minutes. 11.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.17 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 251 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 198 locks, averaging 1.19 lock/miles per hour.

Came down to moor just past the bridge and went to the Hand & Dagger for lunch (Chicken Balti 6.55, Vegeterian Pizza 4.55) hich was very good.

From Kirkham Bridge No 26 to Preston arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.86 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 252 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 198 locks, averaging 1.18 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a pair of oyster catchers and a curlew. Came into Ashton Basin for gas, diesel and a nights mooring. Had the gas put on board then we backed out of the basin to turn the boat and then come in backwards so that we could fill with diesel (129 litres at 29p). A day of sunshine and cloud with one heavy shower this morning.

Wednesday 11th June 2003

From Preston to Ribble Link Junction arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 50 minutes. 1.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.8 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 253 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 198 locks, averaging 1.17 lock/miles per hour.

Went into Preston town centre this morning and went to a few shops and the bank. Then we walked down to the dock and did our shopping at Morrison's and got a taxi back. Had a pump out (10) and paid for yesteday's diesel (37.41) and gas (14.25) before setting off. Moored a little way past the link junction and went back to take some photos before lunch.

From Ribble Link Junction to Brock Aqueduct No 46 arriving at 6:05 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 10.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.96 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 257 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 198 locks, averaging 1.16 lock/miles per hour.

Beryl had a bath while we cruised down to Bilsborrow. The visitor moorings were full so we came on to moor past the aqueduct again. A day of sunshine and cloud.

From Brock Aqueduct No 46 to Richmond Bridge No 80 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 10.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 4.01 lock/miles per hour. Stopped for 30 minutes for water at Garstang then came on to moor before Cartmels Bridge No 74. On the way we passed Poppytime and Completely Foxed again. A few light showers this morning but a mostly sunny afternoon.

Stopped for 10 minutes at Galgate to dump the rubbish and to check the time to be at the Ribble Lick on Tuesday. Moored just after the bridge and went into town. Went down to the river and up to the castle. Had lunch in Verdi's (Vegeterian Pizza and Mafioso Pizza 3.95 each). From Lancaster, Bridge No 98 to Hest Bank Bridge No 118 arriving at 5:30 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 5.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.52 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 265 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 198 locks, averaging 1.12 lock/miles per hour.

Beryl steered for a couple of miles this afternoon. We stopped for 15 minutes at the Lune Aqueduct while I took a picture. We arrived at the turning point past the bridge at 17.10 then we turned and came back to the visitor moorings. A day of sunshine and cloud.

From Hest Bank Bridge No 118 to Galgate Basin Wharf arriving at 12:10 am. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 10.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.24 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 268 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 198 locks, averaging 1.11 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for 15 minutes to fill with water at Lancaster. Saw a kingfisher near Deep Cutting Bridge No 94. Moored oposite the facilities and after lunch walked down the Glasson Branch to the bottom lock. A warm sunny day.

From Galgate Basin Wharf to Wyre Aqueduct No 61 arriving at 11:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 7.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.51 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 271 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 198 locks, averaging 1.1 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just past the aqueduct and went down to take pictures of it from the river. Went into town and had lunch at the Wheatsheaf (Roast Beef 5.95, Vegetable Kiev 5.10) then went on to Safeway.

From Wyre Aqueduct No 61 to Roebuck Bridge No 44 arriving at 4:15 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 0 minutes. 5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 273 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 198 locks, averaging 1.09 lock/miles per hour.

Came down to Bilsborrow but it was very busy and there were no good moorings there so we came on to moor past Head Nook Bridge No 43. A sunny day with a cooling breeze.

From Roebuck Bridge No 44 to Salwick Hall Bridge No 24 arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 7.12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.05 lock/miles per hour. Stopped 25 minutes for water at Swillbrook Bridge No 32. Moored a a little way past Salwick Hall Bridge. Albert Edward from Glascote moored a little way in front of us. A hot sunny day.

Tuesday 17th June 2003

From Salwick Hall Bridge No 24 to Lock 1 arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 5.5 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.52 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 279 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 206 locks, averaging 1.09 lock/miles per hour.

Set off from our moorings behind Albert Edward and turned into the basin at the top of the link just behind them. We went down the staircase locks together, they forwards we backwards to save turning in the basin. We then went through all the other locks together with Gilly Bee and Sixpence following then Beulah and The Ginger Lady bringing up the rear. We all moored three abreast on the pontoon to wait for the tide and to have lunch.

From Lock 1 to Town End Bridge No 12 arriving at 3:15 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 8.12 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.86 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 281 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 208 locks, averaging 1.09 lock/miles per hour.

We were given the signal to set off just after lunch and we lead the convoy out onto the Ribble. A good trip and we entered Tarleton Lock shortly before Albert Edward. Moored before the swing bridge. After a few showers overnight and in the early morning the weather turned out fine for the whole trip with a good deal of sunshine.

Went shopping at the Spar before setting off. Moored for lunch above the lock.

From German's Lock No 5 to Appley Bridge No 42 arriving at 5:40 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 6 miles and 5 locks, averaging 2.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 288 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 216 locks, averaging 1.1 lock/miles per hour.

Set off for lock 4 after lunch but found the pound above it very low so that I got stuck for a while under the railway bridge and Beryl had to let down some more water. It was almost an hour after we set off before I got into lock 3. The lock keeper assisted us through Lathom Top Lock. We came down the main line and moored a little way beyond Appley Bridge. A cloudy and wet morning and a dry afternoon with some sun.

Stopped 35 minutes for water below Dean Lock. Saw Wors coming up Poolstock Locks as we went down. Had lunch on the move and moored just before the bridge. Collected the post from town and later went down to Sainsbury's for shopping and came back by taxi. A cloudy day with a sunny evening.

Albert Edward and Beulah arrived this morning and moored behind us just before I went into town to the bank. On our trip this morning I saw a knigfisher come past the boat and fly under Hall House Bridge. Stopped 15 minutes at Boothshall Bridge for a pumpout (12.50). Moored a little way further on. A dry day, cloudy in the morning and sunnier in the afternoon.

We were accompanied up the locks by BW because of problems with the gates at lock 86. Turned off the Rochdale and moored at Piccadilly Village.

Sunday 22nd June 2003

From Ducie Street, Manchester to Fairfield Top Lock No 18 arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 5 hours 10 minutes. 3.75 miles and 18 locks, averaging 4.21 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 305 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 250 locks, averaging 1.14 lock/miles per hour.

Had to stop on our way up the locks to clear a lot of plastic and other debris from the prop. Some of the pounds were very shallow even when they are full. Saw more purple orchids outside a derilict factory. Saw no other boats at all on the way. Stayed above the top lock for 35 minutes while we filled with water.

From Fairfield Top Lock No 18 to Hatherlow Aqueduct arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 8.12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.87 lock/miles per hour. Had lunch on the move. Saw more orchids in a field as we came up the Peak Forest Canal. Moored before Holehouse Fold Bridge No 14. A cloudy start to the day becoming warm and sunny.

Monday 23rd June 2003

From Hatherlow Aqueduct to Marple Aqueduct arriving at 11:35 am. The time taken was 55 minutes. 1.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 309 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 250 locks, averaging 1.13 lock/miles per hour.

Started late as there was some rain this morning and I had other things to do. Had to stop to remove more rubbish from the prop. Moored for lunch after the aqueduct and before the locks.

From Marple Aqueduct to Marple Top Lock No 16 arriving at 3:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 1.25 miles and 16 locks, averaging 6.27 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 312 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 266 locks, averaging 1.17 lock/miles per hour.

Had a good run up the locks meeting a couple of boats on the way down and getting the assistance of a canal enthusiast with his own windlass as we cme to the top. Moored just past the junction and went to the Co-op supermarket for shopping. A mostly dry day with sunshine later in the afternoon.

Tuesday 24th June 2003

From Marple Top Lock No 16 to Whaley Bridge arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 6.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 315 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 266 locks, averaging 1.16 lock/miles per hour.

Set off from Marple at 8.55. Had to work the two lift bridges but the two swing bridges were operated for us by other boaters. Turned at Whaley Bridge at 11.40 then had to wait 20 minutes for the water point to be free and 20 minutes to fill with water before going the short distance to the visitor moorings. Saw the people from Seamus & Kate who are moored here. Walked down to Bugsworth Basin and had lunch at the Navigation Inn (Penne Pasta 6.75, Steak & Kidney Pie 7.50). A dry day of cloud followed by some sunshine.

Went shopping at Tesco's at Whaley Bridge before setting off. The narrowboat Johan followed us through the second swing bridge and the two lift bridges as he was single-handed. Turned onto the Macclesfield Canal at the junction but did not stop.

Stopped for twenty minutes at Macclesfield to fill with water. At Royal Oak Swing Bridge No 49 the narrowboat Border Rose was coming in the opposite direction so we let them through after us. Moored before Cowley Farm Bridge No 51. A warm sunny day with some cloud and a cooling breeze.

Came down the locks behind a narrowboat and in front of a cruiser called Hi FI. Came on to moor at Congleton for lunch and to post my letters.

Came on to moor just past Rowndes Bridge No 86. Went down the new short footpath and on towards Little Moreton Hall but turned back because of the long wet grass that would have soaked us before we could get to the hall. A wet day with very few breaks in the rain after we had done the locks this morning.

Saturday 28th June 2003

From Simpson Bridge No 85 to Harding's Wood Junction arriving at 10:20 am. The time taken was 1 hour 25 minutes. 3.62 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.26 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 330 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 279 locks, averaging 1.15 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 15 minutes for water just before Hall Green Lock. Moored at Kidsgrove and went shopping at Tesco.

From Harding's Wood Junction to Barlaston Bridge No 103 arriving at 4:40 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 25 minutes. 11.37 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.21 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 335 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 285 locks, averaging 1.15 lock/miles per hour.

Set off at 11.10 but had to wait until 11.50 before we could go into Harecastle Tunnel. Stopped for 5 minutes at Stoke Marina to see if we could get a pumpout but there was a very long wait so we went on. Moored just past Oldroad Bridge No 104. A dry day with some sunshine.

Sunday 29th June 2003

From Barlaston Bridge No 103 to Sandon Lock No 25 arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 3 hours 55 minutes. 7.75 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.28 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 339 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 294 locks, averaging 1.16 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 15 minutes at Stone Boat Building for a pumpout (10). Saw a kingfisher near Andre Mills Bridge No 92. Stopped for lunch between Lower Burston Bridge No 85 and Flute Meadow Bridge No 84.

From Sandon Lock No 25 to River Trent Aqueduct arriving at 5:25 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 55 minutes. 9.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.7 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 343 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 299 locks, averaging 1.16 lock/miles per hour.

There were a lot of boats on the move today and we found most locks in our favour. Moored just before the aqueduct. A warm sunny day with a cooling breeze.

Came down to moor at Rugeley to collect the post but it did not arrive today. Stayed on the moorings during a very wet day.
