Thursday 1th August 2002

From to Weston Marsh Side Lock arriving at 12:00 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 12 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.31 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 334 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 461 locks, averaging 1.68 lock/miles per hour.

Set off in cloud and had some light showers as we went down river and some heavier rain just before we moored.Turned and stopped for lunch.

Came back to moor below the locks. Rain all afternoon. Had dinner on the boat.

Friday 2th August 2002

From Dutton Locks No 4 to Anderton Lift Branch Junction arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 5.37 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.85 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 338 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 463 locks, averaging 1.66 lock/miles per hour.

The river was running quite fast this morning due to all the rain we have had lately. Turned very quickly at Anderton as the strong flow took the front of the boat round. Had lunch on the boat and looked round the visitor centre. There had been a mix up with our booking for the lift but eventually we were able to go up at the time we had booked (15.30).

From Anderton Lift Branch Junction to Acton Bridge No 209 arriving at 5:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 3.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.35 lock/miles per hour. Came up the lift with two short boats. Beryl had a bath as we cruised up the canal through the two short tunnels. We had to wait for boats coming the other way at both Barnton and Saltersford tunnels. Moored just before the bridge and went to the Horns for dinner. A wet start to the day but sunny in the afternoon.

Saturday 3th August 2002

From Acton Bridge No 209 to Lymm Bridge No 23 arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 4 hours 5 minutes. 13.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 345 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 464 locks, averaging 1.63 lock/miles per hour.

Arrived at Preston Brook Tunnel at 9.10, just in time to go straight through. Stopped at Midland Chandlers for 10 minutes then made good progress to Lymm. Had lunch on the boat then went round the town and did some shopping.

Moored just past Dunham Woodhouse Underbridge. Had dinner on the boat. A misty start to the day gave way to sunshine. More cloud in the afternoon ans one light shower.

From Dunham Town Bridge No 27 to Worsley Wharf arriving at 11:15 am. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 11.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 349 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 464 locks, averaging 1.61 lock/miles per hour.

Set off in the rain but the sun had come out before the junction with the Stretford and Leigh Branch. Stopped at Worsley for water but had to wait half an hour as two other boats had arrived before us. It also took us 30 minutes to fill with water as it was a slow tap. Went to the Bridgewater Arms for lunch.

From Worsley Wharf to Poolstock Lock No 2 arriving at 5:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 13 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.8 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 352 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 464 locks, averaging 1.6 lock/miles per hour.

Passed a lot of boats this afternoon including a broad beam wooden dutch barge with lee boards. Moored about half a mile before the lock. A mixed weather day - sun , cloud and rain.

Monday 5th August 2002

From Poolstock Lock No 2 to Leigh Branch Junction arriving at 81:0 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 0.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.31 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 353 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 466 locks, averaging 1.6 lock/miles per hour.

The bottom gates at Poolstock Bottom Lock would not close properly and were leaking badly. We moored at the junction and walked down to see the Way We Were exhibition and Trencherfield Mill. Had lunch on the boat then moved on a little way to moor below the bottom lock. A warm day with sunshine and cloud.

Tuesday 6th August 2002

From Leigh Branch Junction to Wigan Top Lock No 65 arriving at 2:05 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 15 minutes. 2 miles and 20 locks, averaging 5.18 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 358 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 486 locks, averaging 1.64 lock/miles per hour.

Started off up the locks and were soon joined by a lock keeper then another who bothe helped us up the flight. Near the top we passed three boats coming down. Stopped 25 minutes for water at the top.

From Wigan Top Lock No 65 to Johnson's Hill Bottom Lock No 64 arriving at 6:05 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 10.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.97 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 361 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 487 locks, averaging 1.63 lock/miles per hour.

Had lunch on the move and stopped for 40 minutes at the White Bear Marina as we had to turn the boat so that the pumpout was on the right side (diesel 73 litres at 25p a litre, pumpout 10). Moored at the bottom of the locks and went to the Malthouse for Dinner. A warm day of sunshine and cloud.

Wednesday 7th August 2002

From Johnson's Hill Bottom Lock No 64 to Riley Green Bridge No 91A arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 3.75 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.03 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 363 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 494 locks, averaging 1.63 lock/miles per hour.

Went to Asda by taxi in the morning to do our shopping. After lunch set off up the locks and along the summit. Moored just past the bridge. A mostly cloudy day with a couple of showers and some sunshine.

Thursday 8th August 2002

From Riley Green Bridge No 91A to Enam Bridge No 103A arriving at 11:10 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 5.75 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.92 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 366 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 500 locks, averaging 1.64 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kinkfisher near Feniscowle. Stopped 25 minutes for water at the locks - slow tap. Moored and went into town to collect the post and to do some shopping. Came back and had lunch at the Wharf pub.

From Enam Bridge No 103A to Hapton Bridge No 121 arriving at 5:25 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.13 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 370 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 500 locks, averaging 1.62 lock/miles per hour.

Met several boats coming in the opposite direction this afternoon. A lot of weed and rubbish in this section of the canal. Moored just before the bridge. A cool and cloudy day but no rain until after we stopped cruising this evening.

Friday 9th August 2002

From Hapton Bridge No 121 to Barrowford Top Lock No 45 arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 5 minutes. 11.5 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.44 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 375 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 506 locks, averaging 1.61 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a black rabbit on the towpath at Hapton. According to a local all the wild rabbits here are black. A wet cruise through Burnley and up the locks. Moored at the top and had a cooked lunch on the boat.

From Barrowford Top Lock No 45 to Salterforth Bridge No 151 arriving at 5:35 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 3.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.19 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 376 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 507 locks, averaging 1.61 lock/miles per hour.

Set off at 16.15 and arrived at the tunnel just before the lights changed. We were waved on by the two boats waiting there (one of them Summer Wine which we have seen numerous times all the way from Wigan) and went through first. Stopped on the 48 hour mooring just after the bridge. A rainy day but it stayed dry for our afternoon journey.

Saturday 10th August 2002

From Salterforth Bridge No 151 to Double Arched Bridge No 161 arriving at 11:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 5.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.64 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 379 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 510 locks, averaging 1.61 lock/miles per hour.

Filled with water before setting off. Saw a kingfisher at Barnoldswick. Shared the Greenberfield locks with Holly. Stopped for lunch on the piling about a mile past the bridge.

From Double Arched Bridge No 161 to Higherland Lock No 32 arriving at 3:30 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 3.75 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.64 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 382 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 519 locks, averaging 1.62 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the locks by ourselves. Moored above the lock. Had a walk round the village and had dinner at the Old Swan Inn. A mostly cloudy day with some showers and a brief sunny interval.

Sunday 11th August 2002

From Higherland Lock No 32 to Skipton Junction arriving at 11:20 am. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.43 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 384 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 522 locks, averaging 1.62 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the three locks by ourselves and met two boats coming up. Two of the swing bridges were operated for us by other boaters and we moored just after Brewery Swing Bridge. Did some shopping in Morrison's then went out to lunch with Dad at the Wooly Sheep. Walked round the town and up the Springs Branch.

From Skipton Junction to Leache Bridge No 196 arriving at 5:40 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 10.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.23 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 387 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 522 locks, averaging 1.6 lock/miles per hour.

A lot of boats on the move this afternoon. Moored just past Booth's Swing Bridge 195. A mostly cloudy day with some showers in the afternoon.

Monday 12th August 2002

From Leache Bridge No 196 to Dowley Gap Staircase Locks Nos 20 and 21 arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 4.12 miles and 8 locks, averaging 4.16 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 390 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 530 locks, averaging 1.61 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 20 minutes for water at Bingley top lock. Barry saw us down the five and another lock keeper worked the three for us. Moored at the bottom of the locks for 5 minutes while I went to get Dad a new film. Moored for lunch near the Fisherman, where we all had a good meal.

From Dowley Gap Staircase Locks Nos 20 and 21 to Shipley Road Bridges No 207A arriving at 3:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 1.62 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.64 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 392 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 533 locks, averaging 1.61 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the Dowley Gap locks alone but went through Hirst Lock with the Apollo trip boat. Moored at Ashley Lane and walked up into Saltaire. A dry day with sunshine and cloud.

Tuesday 13th August 2002

From Shipley Road Bridges No 207A to Horsforth Road Bridge No 216A arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 6.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 395 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 538 locks, averaging 1.61 lock/miles per hour.

A lock keeper helped us through the Field Three Locks but we did Dobson Two ourselves, watched by a bunch of onlookers. Stopped 25 minutes for a pumpout (10) at Apperley Bridge Marina. Moored on Rodley Visitor Moorings and had lunch and dinner on the boat. A mostly cloudy day.

Wednesday 14th August 2002

From Horsforth Road Bridge No 216A to River Lock No 1, Leeds arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 4 hours 25 minutes. 6.12 miles and 12 locks, averaging 4.1 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 400 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 550 locks, averaging 1.62 lock/miles per hour.

Had to wait a while at the top of the Newlay Locks while the lock keepers sorted out some problems then went down all the locks with Gnome of Rishton Too. Moored in the basin and went to Bella Pasta for lunch. Did some shopping went round the city centre and called in at the Station to check the train times for Dad's return tomorrow. A mostly sunny day.

Saw Dad off at the station then went shopping at Morrison's. Had lunch on the boat before setting off. Stopped for water (20 minutes) just after Leeds Lock. Came through all the locks by ourselves. Moored just below the lock. A day of sunshine and cloud.

From King's Road Lock No 3 to Stanley Ferry Aqueduct arriving at 11:20 am. The time taken was 1 hour 10 minutes. 1.62 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.1 lock/miles per hour. A short trip today to moor about half a mile past the aqueduct. A hot sunny day.

Monday 19th August 2002

After spending two days at Stanley Ferry we set off for Wakefield. Went shopping at Morrison's and went to Halfords to get some silicone spray for the toilet seals. Had lunch on the boat.

From Wakefield Flood Gates to Dewsbury Arm Junction arriving at 4:45 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 6.75 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.48 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 410 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 566 locks, averaging 1.62 lock/miles per hour.

Had to lock through Thornes Flood Lock as the level had been lowered due to bank protection work but the lock was worked for us by the work team there. Moored just before the junction and changed the seals and ball on the toilet. A warrm day, sunny in the morning more cloudy this afternoon.

Tuesday 20th August 2002

From Dewsbury Arm Junction to Ledgard Flood Gates arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 3.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.72 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 412 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 570 locks, averaging 1.62 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher below Greenwood Lock. Stopped at Shepley Bridge for water and a pumpout (11). Spent 1 hour 40 minutes there as we had to wait for a community boat that was waiting to pickup passegers then another boat (Puffin) came and moored beside us so we waited while we both filled with water and had a pumpout. Moved on to moor in the flood lock and went to the Railway for lunch (Vegetable Bake 5.95, Yorkshire Pud with sausages 4.95). Did some shopping at the Co-op.

From Ledgard Flood Gates to Cooper Bridge Flood Gates arriving at 3:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 1.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.81 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 414 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 572 locks, averaging 1.62 lock/miles per hour.

Came through all the locks today by ourselves. Stopped on the Cooper Bridge Flood Gates visitor moorings. Mostly cloudy with some sunny intervals.

Came uo the first five locks by ourselves but camre through the last four with Jacqueline from Stibbington. Moored at Sainsbury's and had lunch in the store then did our shopping. A warm day, sunny in the morning but clouding over in the afternoon.

Tuesday 27th August 2002

From Fieldhouse Green Lock No 7 to Ledgard Flood Gates arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 3.62 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.24 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 422 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 590 locks, averaging 1.63 lock/miles per hour.

Having spent over five days at the Festival we set off down the locks with Colne (a 50 foot narrow boat that was moored oposite us) later we separated as we caught upwith other boats. Scythia was a little way in front of us and got caughton the front of the lock and took on water at the bottom lock of the Huddersfield Broad. We went on to Mirfield and moored in the flood lock. Went to the Railway for lunch (Roast Pork 3.75, Broccoli & Cheese Bake 5.95 and Cheese Salad 5.25).

Came down the most of the locks by ourselves but went through Thornes Lock with Pedigree. Stopped by the timber yard and went round the shops and had lunch in a Chinese Restaurant. Did shpping at Morrison's before returning to the boat.

From King's Road Lock No 3 to River Lock No 1, Leeds arriving at 2:40 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 20 minutes. 14.25 miles and 10 locks, averaging 4.55 lock/miles per hour. Came through the the first locks by ourselves but at Woodlesford Lock we met up with Weyfly which was being taken single handed to Leeds. Came all the way up to the basin with the woman on Weyfly. Stopped for water, 30 minutes, on the pontoon before Leeds Lock. Had lunch on the move and went round Leeds with Rosemary in the afternoon. Had a good dinner at Dino's by the station. A warm day with a couple of light showers in the morning.

Friday 30th August 2002

In the morning we went to the Royal Armouries Museum then saw Rosemary off at the station. Had lunch at Bella Pasta (Carne Mista Pizza 7.70, Giardineira Pizza 7.25). Came through the first two locks by ourselves but shared the others with a wide beam cruiser. Moored just before the lock. A mostly cloudy and windy day.
