Monday 1th July 2002

From to Hurleston Junction arriving at 11:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 6.25 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 255 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 395 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Had to wait for the boat in front (Annabella) at the first of the days locks. Turned on to the Llangollen canal and went straight up the locks.

From Hurleston Junction to Hurleston Top Lock No 4 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 55 minutes. 0.25 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.64 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 256 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 399 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

Met three boats coming down as we went up the locks. Stopped for lunch on some new visitor moorings just past bridge 3.

From Hurleston Top Lock No 4 to Wrenbury Lift Bridge No 20 arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 6 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 259 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 404 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

Met several more boats this afternoon as we went up the locks. Stopped on another new mooring, with mooring rings like the last one, between bridges 18 and 19 (Wrenbury Church Lift Bridge). A cloudy day, dry in the morning but wet in the afternoon.

Tuesday 2th July 2002

From Wrenbury Lift Bridge No 20 to New Mills Lift Bridge No 31 arriving at 2:45 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 15 minutes. 7.12 miles and 10 locks, averaging 3.26 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 264 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 414 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Worked through the locks, behind an Empress hire boat for most of the way. Got stuck on the sill at Grindley Brook when moving from the bottom to the middle lock. The lock keeper let down some more water for us. Stopped 20 minutes for water above the locks. Turned down the Whitchurch Arm and winded the boat before backing into the mooring. Went into town to collect the post and to do shopping. Got the main shopping at Tesco then got a taxi back. A cloudy day but with more sunny periods in the afternoon.

Wednesday 3th July 2002

From New Mills Lift Bridge No 31 to Little Mill Bridge No 55 arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 10.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.56 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 268 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 414 locks, averaging 1.92 lock/miles per hour.

A cloudy and showery start to te day but sunny periods increased and we had a very plesant and interesting trip. A lot of boats on the move. We moored for lunch between bridges 54 and 55 on the 48 hour moorings overlooking Cole Mere.

From Little Mill Bridge No 55 to Hindford Bridge No 11 arriving at 5:40 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 7.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 271 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 414 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

We stopped 20 minutes at the marina at Ellesmere but did not buy anything. Passed Frankton Junction and moored immediately after Hinford Bridge. Had dinner at the Jack Mytton Inn (Brocolli & Tomato Pasta Bake 5.95, Salmon Supreme 7.95) A day of sunshine and cloud, dry in the afternoon.

Thursday 4th July 2002

From Hindford Bridge No 11 to Siambr Bridge No 45 arriving at 3:45 pm. The time taken was 6 hours 35 minutes. 12.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.24 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 278 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 416 locks, averaging 1.85 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 10 minutes for water above New Marton Top Lock. Struggled through the tunnels and across Chirk Aqueduct because of the water flow and the weeds which did not help.Had lunch on the move and struggled against the flow again in the narrows up to Llangollen.Saw Tarus and Snipe at the north end of the aqueduct. Turned but did not stop as there was mooring space.

From Siambr Bridge No 45 to Wenffrwd Bridge No 42 arriving at 4:45 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 0 minutes. 1.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.62 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 279 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 416 locks, averaging 1.85 lock/miles per hour.

Came back to moor at Sun Trevor Bridge. A fine day with increasing cloud this afternoon and showers this evening.

Friday 5th July 2002

From Wenffrwd Bridge No 42 to Chirk Tunnel (North end) arriving at 11:40 am. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 6.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.68 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 281 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 416 locks, averaging 1.83 lock/miles per hour.

A rainy voyage this morning. Passed Tarus and Snipe heading towards Llangollen as we approached the junction before Pontcysylite. Spent 15 mintes getting a pumpout (12) at Chirk Marina and another 10 minutes manouvering in and out. Stopped on the moorings before the tunnel and went to the pub in Chirk for lunch - 3 courses for 3.50. After lunch we walked up to Chirk Castle and had a look round. A cloudy day wet in the morning but better in the afternoon.

Saturday 6th July 2002

From Chirk Tunnel (North end) to Frankton Junction arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 7.37 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.74 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 285 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 418 locks, averaging 1.82 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 20 minutes for water above New Marton Top Lock. Saw a kingfisher between Paddock Bridge No 8 and Brooms Bridge No 7. Moored for lunch etc. between Broom Bridge No 67 and Val Hill Bridge No 66 on some new moorings with rings. A warm day with sunny periods.

Sunday 7th July 2002

From Frankton Junction to Ellesmere Branch Junction arriving at 10:05 am. The time taken was 55 minutes. 3.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.68 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 285 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 418 locks, averaging 1.81 lock/miles per hour.

Came down to the junction and dumped the rubbish before moving across the canal to moor. Walked into Ellesmere and did some shopping at Spar. Malcolm Wood of the AWCC came to say hello before we left.

From Ellesmere Branch Junction to Hampton Bank Bridge No 50 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 3.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.81 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 287 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 418 locks, averaging 1.8 lock/miles per hour.

Got stuck on the mud near Greaves Bridge while trying to pass a boat coming the other way and a moored boat. Stopped for lunch before Bridge 50.

From Hampton Bank Bridge No 50 to Platt Lane Bridge No 43 arriving at 4:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 4.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.35 lock/miles per hour. Moored between Platt Lane Bridge and Tilstock Park Lift Bridge. A mostly sunny day.

Monday 8th July 2002

From Platt Lane Bridge No 43 to Wrenbury Lift Bridge No 20 arriving at 6:05 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 10 minutes. 11.12 miles and 10 locks, averaging 4.09 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 294 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 428 locks, averaging 1.79 lock/miles per hour.

Did the 6904 hour service and changed all the filters before lunch. Stopped 15 minutes for water above Grindley Brook Locks. Had a good trip down the locks as we did not have to wait at the top and there were a lot of boats coming up. Moored just before the lift bridge and went to the Dusty Miller for dinner (Mushroomin Garlic, salad & chips 6.25, Chicken Fillet and Bacon 9.95). A mostly sunny day.

Tuesday 9th July 2002

From Wrenbury Lift Bridge No 20 to Burland Bridge No 6 arriving at 6:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 4.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.85 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 296 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 433 locks, averaging 1.8 lock/miles per hour.

Set off at 9.20 through the Wrenbury Lift Bridge and into the Alvechurch Boats basin to get the belt wear problem fixed. They could not fix the problem so we moved over to the other side of the cut to await an engineer. The engineer came after lunch and put a new pulley on the alternator. Came through the Baddiley and Swanley locks to moor just past the bridge. The engine became very noisy as our trip progress so we have phoned Chris Jones, a Beta Marine recommended engineer, to come out to us tomorrow. A wet and cloudy day.

Thursday 11th July 2002

From Burland Bridge No 6 to Nantwich Basin arriving at 10:45 am. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 3.5 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.09 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 298 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 437 locks, averaging 1.8 lock/miles per hour.

Spent the whole of yesterday waiting for the engineer and having pulley wheel stripped out as it was loose on the crank shaft. They did a temporary fix so that we could get to Nantwich for repairs. We stopped for water above Hurleston Locks for 15 minutes. A boat was coming up each of the four locks as we went down. Backed into the Empress Holidays base to await repairs. After lunch we went shopping at Safeways and got a taxi back. Wilson's had been and fitted our new cratch cover while we were away. A dry and sunny start to the day but heavy showers followed.

Friday 19th July 2002

From Nantwich Basin to Hack Green Locks Nos 28 and 29 arriving at 3:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 2.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.69 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 300 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 437 locks, averaging 1.79 lock/miles per hour.

After spending eight days at Nantwich (during which we went to Ely for 2 days for the Ruby Wedding) the pully wheel was finally fixed on the boat at the cost of 318.17. We set off down the canal and moored just before the locks for the night. A warm cloudy day with a shower as we stopped and rain etc this evening.

Saturday 20th July 2002

From Hack Green Locks Nos 28 and 29 to Audlem Bottom Lock No 27 arriving at 3:35 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 3.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 301 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 439 locks, averaging 1.79 lock/miles per hour.

Did not move off until after lunch. Came up through the two Hack Green locks and went down to turn below the bottom lock. Moored next to Lavender Lee, which we last saw a few years ago on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Went to the Bridge Inn for dinner (Sausage & Mash and Vegetable & Stilton Crumble 5.95 each). A mostly cloudy day with a few spots of rain.

Sunday 21st July 2002

From Audlem Bottom Lock No 27 to Nantwich Basin arriving at 11:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 5.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.82 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 304 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 441 locks, averaging 1.78 lock/miles per hour.

A lot of boats on the move this morning and we got into a queue of about six boats at Hack Green locks. Moored several hundred yards before the aqueduct. A mostly sunny day.

Tuesday 23rd July 2002

From Nantwich Basin to Middlewich Bridge No 172 arriving at 4:20 pm. The time taken was 6 hours 35 minutes. 13.62 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.13 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 310 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 448 locks, averaging 1.76 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher just before Nanwich Aqueduct. Stopped 50 minutes at Nantwich Junction for water (slow tap). Went on to Venetian Marina for a pumpout (10) and diesel (99.185 litres at 29.9 p per litre 29.66) which took 30 minutes. Had lunch on the move and came down to the moorings past the bridge for the night. A mostly cloudy day with sunny periods in the morning and showers in the afternoon.

Wednesday 24th July 2002

From Middlewich Bridge No 172 to Whatcroft Hall Bridge No 179 arriving at 3:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 3.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.43 lock/miles per hour. Went shopping at Somerfield this morning and set off after lunch. Saw nb Ivory Gull at Middlewich (we last met when we were both stranded on the flooded Nene). Saw a bullfinch on the way up and moored on the flash just past the railway bridge. A dry but mostly cloudy day.

Came up to Anderton and had to wait 20 minutes to get onto the water, then another 20 minutes to fill before moving down onto a mooring. Went down to the visitor centre and took photographs of the lift. Walked up to the Stanley Arms for lunch (Cheese & Leek Pie and Sword Fish 6.95 each) very good.

Went to find out where the railway station was then went shopping at Sainsburys. Came up river to Winsford and turned above the bridge then moored by the Red Lion. We were hoping to get lunch here but found a very disappointing selection of pubs so we had unch on the boat. I walked up to have a look at the Bottom Flash in the afternoon. A hot sunny day.

Sunday 28th July 2002

From Winsford Bridge to Northwich Bridge arriving at 10:40 am. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 5.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.91 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 320 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 453 locks, averaging 1.73 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Vale Royal and Hunts locks with Occeatheus. Moored for water, had to wait for 25 minutes before we could fill (25 minutes) then I went to enquire at Northwich Marina about pumpout facilities but they don't have any. Set off again at 11.50.

From Northwich Bridge to Anderton Lift Branch Junction arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 30 minutes. 1.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 320 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 453 locks, averaging 1.72 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just before the lift branch and went up to the Stanley Arms for lunch (Cheese & Leek Pie 6.95 and Roast Pork 5.95). On the way back we called into the visitor centre and bought a video about the boat lift.

From Anderton Lift Branch Junction to Acton Bridge arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 4.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.23 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 322 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 454 locks, averaging 1.72 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Saltersford Lock by ourselves. Took a lot of pictures today. Moored just after Acton Bridge. A hot and mostly sunny day.

Monday 29th July 2002

From Acton Bridge to Weston Marsh Side Lock arriving at 11:15 am. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 7.87 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.09 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 324 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 455 locks, averaging 1.71 lock/miles per hour.

Made our way down to Weston Marsh where we turned and moored. Saw a ship turning on the Manchester Ship Canal just below the lock. Three more narrowboats arrived just before we left, including Femina Ferrea from Sheffield.

From Weston Marsh Side Lock to Acton Bridge arriving at 2:45 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 7.87 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.55 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 327 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 456 locks, averaging 1.7 lock/miles per hour.

Had lunch on the move and passed two boats coming down the river as we came up. Moored at the Riverside Inn, just past Acton Bridge. A warm day mostly sunny, but hazy sun at times.

Tuesday 30th July 2002

From Acton Bridge to Pimblott's Shipyard arriving at 11:50 am. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 6.37 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.35 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 329 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 458 locks, averaging 1.69 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a Great Crested Grebe with a chick on the way to Saltersford Lock. Came through the lock with a cruiser. Stopped for water (20 minutes) at Town Bridge then went on to Jalsea Marine, above Hunts Lock, and turned for a pumpout (10). It rained heavily while we were there so we stopped and had lunch before setting off.

From Pimblott's Shipyard to Northwich Bridge arriving at 1:50 pm. The time taken was 50 minutes. 0.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.1 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 330 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 459 locks, averaging 1.69 lock/miles per hour.

Came back and moored before the bridge. Went shopping, including a lot at Sainsburys. A warm cloudy day with the one heavy shower.

Moved across to moor just behind the High Street shops and went shopping at Sainsburys in the morning. Met Dad at the station just after 3 pm then we cruised down to the lift and had a look round before going up to the Stanley Arms for dinner. A wet day but improving in the late afternoon.
