Wednesday 1th August 2001

From to Newbury Lock No 85 arriving at 11:15 am. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 3.5 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.46 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 485 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 819 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the four locks to Newbury and moored opposite the boatyard, before Greenham Lock. Went to Sainsbury's for lunch and shopping. Took some pictures in the afternoon. A cloudy morning and a mostly sunny afternoon.

Thursday 2th August 2001

From Newbury Lock No 85 to Woolhampton Mill Lock No 94 arriving at 2:20 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 5 minutes. 6.5 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.05 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 490 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 828 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

Came down through all but one of the locks with Galatea. The swing bridge at Woolhampton developed a fault and we had to wait about 15 minutes for BW to come and reset the trip switch. Moored just past the bridge. A cloudy and wet day.

Friday 3th August 2001

From Woolhampton Mill Lock No 94 to Burghfield Village Road Bridge arriving at 2:40 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 50 minutes. 8.5 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 494 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 837 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

Met up with Galetea at Aldermaston Lock and came down to Burghfield with them. Stopped at Tyle Mill (55 minutes) while we both filled with water. Had lunch on the move. Moored by the Cunning Man. Mostly cloudy, some sunshine and a couple of light showers.

Saturday 4th August 2001

From Burghfield Village Road Bridge to High Bridge, Reading arriving at 10:45 am. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 3.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 496 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 840 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the last three locks with Galatea and said goobye to them at County Lock. They went on up the Thames and we stopped by the prison. Went shopping and had lunch at Santa fe by the Kennet ( Chicken Quesadilla and Goat Cheese Quesadilla 4.50 each). Did some more shopping at Sainsbury's.

From High Bridge, Reading to Sonning Bridge arriving at 3:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 10 minutes. 2.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.07 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 497 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 842 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Blakes Lock with a hire cruiser from Wargrave. Moored on the hotel moorings past the bridge. A day of sunshine and cloud and rain after we moored.

Sunday 5th August 2001

From Sonning Bridge to Henley Bridge arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 1 hour 40 minutes. 6.12 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.87 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 499 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 844 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

Turned and stopped for water and pumpout (5) just above Shiplake Lock then turned again to go through the lock. We were hoping to moor below Henley bridge but a lot of the spaces were obstructed by the remains of the Regatta so we turned back to moor on the Municipal Moorings above the bridge. Had lunch at Cafe Rouge (Cous-cous aux Legumes 7.95, Salmon Salad 7.45). Went to the River & Rowing Museum (4.95 each) very good.

From Henley Bridge to Temple Island arriving at 4:45 pm. The time taken was 40 minutes. 1.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.06 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 500 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 844 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

Monday 6th August 2001

From Temple Island to Marlow Lock arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 2 hours 0 minutes. 6.87 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.94 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 502 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 847 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

A rainy start to the day so we did not set off until 10.20. Saw a kingfisher below Hambleden Lock. Moored on the Municipal moorings at Marlow for lunch.

From Marlow Lock to Boulter's Lock arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 0 minutes. 6.37 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.69 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 504 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 850 locks, averaging 1.88 lock/miles per hour.

Came through all the locks today with Short Respite, a small narrowboat from Guildford. We were hoping to moor at Cookham but there was not a space big enough for us on the moorings so we came on and moored just past Boulter's Lock. Sunshine, showers and cloud today.

From Boulter's Lock to Windsor Railway Viaduct arriving at 11:35 am. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 6.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.04 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 506 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 852 locks, averaging 1.88 lock/miles per hour.

Saw two Ring Necked Parakeets just before Maidenhead bridge. Both the locks were full of boats as we came down to Windsor. Stopped for 25 minutes to fill with water and dump the rubbish below Boveney Lock, this involved turning round towards the weir to get water and then turning back to the opposite bank below the lock fior refuse disposal. Moored just upstream of the railway bridge (4 mooring fee). After lunch we went round the town and did some shopping. A mostly cloudy day with some sun and a few spots of rain.

Wednesday 8th August 2001

From Windsor Railway Viaduct to Staines Bridge arriving at 11:25 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 7.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.78 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 508 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 855 locks, averaging 1.88 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher just before Romsey Lock. Came through all the locks with just one cruiser - Diana Packet. Stopped on the moorings past the bridge and went to Sainsbury's for shopping then had lunch at the Swan (Mushroom & Pesto Stirfry 6.25, Sausage & Mash 7.95). More than a dozen large cruisers from the Netherlands passed by this afternoon, going up river. Sunshine, cloud and a few brief showers today.

From Staines Bridge to Hampton Court Bridge arriving at 1:30 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 10 minutes. 12 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.08 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 512 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 860 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Penton Hook and Chertsey locks with a group of cruisers from the Lee & Stort Cruising Club. Stopped for water below Chertsey lock but we had to wait for another narrowboat to fill first (25 minutes in all). Moored just before the start of the Hampton Court moorings just as a thunder storm started. A day of sunshine, cloud and rain.

Friday 10th August 2001

From Hampton Court Bridge to Teddington Lock arriving at 79:5 pm. The time taken was 55 minutes. 4.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 5.04 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 513 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 860 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just before the lock and went to see the lock keeper who said that we could go down to Brentford at 7.45 am tomorrow. Had lunch at Caffe Uno (Pizza Margheritta 4.95, Quattro Staginoni 6.95). A day of sunshine and cloud.

Saturday 11th August 2001

From Teddington Lock to Bulls Bridge Junction arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 5 hours 10 minutes. 11.12 miles and 13 locks, averaging 4.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 518 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 873 locks, averaging 1.88 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Teddington Lock with a cruiser and three other narrowboats. Came through Brentford Lock with Vespa but through all the following locks with John Ruskin, a 70 foot narrowboat, that had locked through Teddington before us. Saw two tufted ducks above the Gauging Locks. Stopped at Bulls Bridge while Beryl did some shopping at Tesco. We moored beside another boat.

From Bulls Bridge Junction to Packet Boat Bridge No 190 arriving at 2:10 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 15 minutes. 3.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.8 lock/miles per hour. Moored just before the Turning Point pub. A day of cloud and sunshine.

Sunday 12th August 2001

From Packet Boat Bridge No 190 to Troy Junction arriving at 5:50 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 6.25 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.38 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 523 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 878 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

A wet morning so we stayed at Cowley Peachy and went to the Turning Point for lunch (Roast Pork and Baby Vegetables Jus and Goats Cheese en croute, 8.95 each). Came up through Cowley Lock and filled with water at the same time (30 minutes). Saw Jemi just above Cowley Lock. Shared a couple of locks with Briar Rose. Moored a little way after Black Jacks Lock. A cloudy day but dry in the afternoon.

Monday 13th August 2001

From Troy Junction to Lot Mead Lock No 80 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 3.62 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.39 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 525 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 882 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Topped up the batteries and put a little paint on the boat before setting off. Went through a couple of locks with another narrowboat. Moored for lunch a little way before Lot Mead Lock.

From Lot Mead Lock No 80 to Cassiobridge, Watford, No 169 arriving at 3:05 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 1.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.23 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 526 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 884 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the two locks by ourselves. We wanted to get pumpout and diesel at Cassio Bridge but they are closed all day on Mondays so we moved across to the towpath side to moor. A warm and mostly cloudy day with increasing sun in the latter part of the day.

Tuesday 14th August 2001

From Cassiobridge, Watford, No 169 to Hunton Bridge Top Lock No 72 arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 3 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.43 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 529 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 891 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Moved over to have a pumpout (10) and to get some diesel (50.78 litres at 32p total 16.25) before setting off. Did not fill with diesel as 32p is the most I have paid this year. Came up by ourselves to Hunton Bridge. Went to the Kings Head for lunch (Melted Cheese Chilli & Chips 5, Chicken Salad 4.75).

From Hunton Bridge Top Lock No 72 to Nash Mill Top Lock No 68 arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 3 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.69 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 531 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 896 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Came up all but the last lock by ourselves, but followed by two narrowboats travelling together. Moored above Nash Mill Top lock. A hot sunny day.

Wednesday 15th August 2001

From Nash Mill Top Lock No 68 to Aspley Bottom Lock No 67 arriving at 71:5 pm. The time taken was 30 minutes. 0.37 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.74 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 532 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 897 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Came up through the lock and went to Sainsbury's for breakfast and shopping. Saw Tiny Purple filling with water above the lock and took some photographs.

From Aspley Bottom Lock No 67 to Bottom Side Lock No 57 arriving at 4:35 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 3.87 miles and 10 locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 536 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 907 locks, averaging 1.88 lock/miles per hour.

Came up through lock 68 and filled with water (25 minutes). Came through locks 60 to 58 with the narrowboat Taid. Moored above lock 57. A hot day sunny in the morning and early afternoon but clouding over later.

Thursday 16th August 2001

From Bottom Side Lock No 57 to Berkhamsted Top Lock No 53 arriving at 10:10 am. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 1.37 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.78 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 537 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 912 locks, averaging 1.88 lock/miles per hour.

Came up to Berkhamsted and moored near Waitrose, behind Tiny Purple. Went into town and had an early lunch at Caffe Uno then had an hour internet session (5) at the library but could not copy the pages to floppy or retrieve my e-mail.

From Berkhamsted Top Lock No 53 to Bulbourne Bridge No 133 arriving at 4:40 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 5.37 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.81 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 540 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 919 locks, averaging 1.88 lock/miles per hour.

Came up to the summit and along to moor opposite the BW workshops. Went to the Grand Junction Arms for dinner (Salmon Curry 8.95, Onion Bhaji & Chips 5.20). A mostly cloudy day but with sunny intervals.

Friday 17th August 2001

From Bulbourne Bridge No 133 to Marsworth Junction arriving at 10:55 am. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 1.12 miles and 7 locks, averaging 5.13 lock/miles per hour. Came down the locks and met five boats going the other way. Stopped for water (10 minutes) at the junction.

Met three boats coming up the locks as we went down. Bryan Barnes, chairman of the Aylesbury Canal Society, greeted us from the "welcome boat" and found us a mooring beside the Flying Pig. Went to the Bell for lunch (Spicy Bean Burger 3.45, Chicken Madras 5.25) then on to Tesco's for shopping. On returning to the boat we got a hookup to the mains electricity. A warm but mostly cloudy day with a few light showers.

Sunday 19th August 2001

From Aylesbury Basin and Wharves to Marsworth Junction arriving at 5:50 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 10 minutes. 6.12 miles and 16 locks, averaging 4.28 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 552 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 958 locks, averaging 1.91 lock/miles per hour.

A wet morning so we stayed at Aylesbury basin and filled with water then started off after an early lunch. Stopped for 20 minutes a little way past lock 15 due to noises from the gear box. Rang John Pattle (07885 722444) about the problem but he was away on the Oxford Canal and advised we move on to Marsworth. Came up the last eight locks behind a singlr handed boater who made good time through the locks. Moored just past the junction. A mostly dry afternoon with sunshine and cloud.

Wednesday 22nd August 2001

From Marsworth Junction to Marsworth Junction arriving at 6:30 pm. The time taken was 0 minutes. 0 miles and 0 locks, averaging 0 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 552 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 958 locks, averaging 1.91 lock/miles per hour.

Spent almost three days here waiting for a new coupling to arrive to replace the faulty one. We also got the domestic batteries checked and replaced. On monday we went into Tring by taxi and visited the Zoological Museum (3.50 each) and had lunch at an Italian Restaurant. On Wednesday Trevor Oxley gave aus a lift to Tesco's at Tring and we did our shopping and got a taxi back.The new batteries came at lunch time (120 for the two). The coupling arrived at about 16.45 and was fitted and tested (369.20).

From Marsworth Junction to Seabrook Bottom Lock No 34 arriving at 7:55 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 25 minutes. 2.5 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.59 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 553 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 962 locks, averaging 1.92 lock/miles per hour.

Got in a little bit of cruising before stopping for the night below lock 35. A sunny day.

Thursday 23rd August 2001

From Seabrook Bottom Lock No 34 to Water Eaton Bridge No 98 arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 6 hours 30 minutes. 12.37 miles and 12 locks, averaging 3.75 lock/miles per hour. Stopped for water (20 minutes) just before Slapton Lock. Stopped for a pumpout at Wyvern Shipping at Leighton Buzzard (10 but they had no blue). Had lunch on the move and moored just before bridge 97 to go into Bletchley to collect the post.

From Water Eaton Bridge No 98 to Little Woolstone Bridge No 83 arriving at 5:40 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 4.5 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour. Came up to our moorings for the festival. Shared most of the locks today with various other boats. A sunny start to the day but cloud and light rain later.

Stopped for water by bridge 78 (45 minutes as we had to wait for the boat in front to fill before us). Moored on the Linford Manor moorings and walked down to see the church (could not go inside) and the rest of the village. A mostly warm and sunny day.

Stopped on the mooring rings just past the bridge and went shopping at Tesco's. Stayed on the boat for lunch.

A lot of boats on the move today including Wyvern Shipping and Canaltime boats. Saw a mink come out of the water and run across the towpath just after bridge 63. Moored between bridge 56 and the locks. A warm sunny day.

From Stoke Bruerne Bottom Lock No 20 to Blisworth Tunnel South End arriving at 11:05 am. The time taken was 1 hour 40 minutes. 1.25 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.95 lock/miles per hour. Stopped 20 minutes for water at the bottom of the Stoke Bruerne locks. Came up the locks with Laura, from the Peak Forest Canal. Moored between the top lock and the tunnel. A dull day with some light showers.

From Blisworth Tunnel South End to Heyford Bridge No 32 arriving at 11:55 am. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 8.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.91 lock/miles per hour. Came through Blisworth Tunnel behind Florian. We were planning to stop at Blisworth Tunnel Boats for a pumpout but they were turning round hire boats so we went on. Saw a kingfisher before bridge 42. Stopped just past Heyford Bridge and went into Nether Heyford to have lunch at the Olde Sun Inn (Cod & chips and Baked Potato with Coleslaw 3.50 each).

From Heyford Bridge No 32 to Whilton Bottom Lock No 13 arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 6 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 574 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 983 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at High House wharf for a pumpout (12). Moored between the Bridge 18 and the bottom lock. A cool day of sunshine, cloud and a couple of showers.
