Friday 1th June 2001

From to Marple Aqueduct arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 6.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 212 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 343 locks, averaging 2.08 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped a Warble Wharf for a pumpout (10) which took 40 minutes as we had to move the boat and wait. Moored for lunch just before the aqueduct.

From Marple Aqueduct to Ridge End Bridge No 21 arriving at 5:20 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 2.37 miles and 16 locks, averaging 5.01 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 216 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 359 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the locks watched by many people and helped by some. Met the lock keeper we met at Gargrave last year and he showed me the picture of our boat he took then. Saw Katie Jane and Catherine Jayne again, moored at the top of the locks. We moored a little way after bridge 21. A dull day with a shower in the afternoon.

From Ridge End Bridge No 21 to Whaley Bridge arriving at 12:00 am. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 5.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 218 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 359 locks, averaging 2.1 lock/miles per hour.

Did my 6072 hour service before setting off this morning. Met Handsel again at one of the lift bridges. Went down to Whaley Bridge basin and turned then moored on the visitor moorings just past the basin. Walked down to the Navigation Inn at Buxworth Basin for lunch (Roast Lamb 6.25, Vegetable Tart 7.50, desserts 2.75 each) which was very good.

Came back to Marple and turned onto the Macclesfield canal and filled with water (40 minutes) before moving on a little way to find a mooring. A day of sunshine and cloud.

Did some shopping at the Co-op in Marple before setting off. Stopped just after the bridge at Macclesfield for lunch.

From Buxton Road Bridge No 37 to Bosley Top Lock No 1 arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 5.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 227 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 359 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

A BW man was working on the Royal Oak Swing Bridge and had opened it for a boat coming in the opposite direction so let us through too. Moored just before bridge 53 behind Handsel. A breezy day with cloud in the morning and sun in the afternoon.

Tuesday 5th June 2001

From Bosley Top Lock No 1 to Congleton Wharf arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 5.75 miles and 12 locks, averaging 5.2 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 230 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 371 locks, averaging 2.04 lock/miles per hour.

Took 1 hour 50 minutes to get down the locks, met quite a few boats coming up. Saw a stoat swim the canal and cross the towpath near Congleton. Stopped at the wharf and went to the Wharf pub for lunch (Garlic Mushrooms with Baked Potato and Salmon Steak less than 12 including drinks).

From Congleton Wharf to Harding's Wood Junction arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 5.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.61 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 233 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 372 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water just before Hall Green Stop Lock (20 minutes) and met Frank and Gill on Fragil coming up through the lock. Got to the junction at 16.05 but then spent another 20 minutes backing down to the moorings so we can go shopping in the morning. A cloudy morning but a warmer and sunnier afternoon.

Wednesday 6th June 2001

From Harding's Wood Junction to Hassall Green Locks No 57 and 58 arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 5 minutes. 4.87 miles and 16 locks, averaging 5.11 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 237 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 388 locks, averaging 2.06 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping at Tesco's before lunch. One of the pounds in the Red Bull flight was very low as someone had left some paddles up. Moored just before the Hassall Green Locks. A cloudy day with some showers this afternoon.

Thursday 7th June 2001

From Hassall Green Locks No 57 and 58 to Wheelock Bottom Lock No 66 arriving at 11:15 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 1.87 miles and 10 locks, averaging 5.28 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 239 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 398 locks, averaging 2.08 lock/miles per hour.

Followed anther boat down the locks and passed three or four boats coming up. A short but heavy hail shower came as we neared the bottom of the flight. Moored at the bottom for lunch etc. Sunshine and showers today.

Friday 8th June 2001

From Wheelock Bottom Lock No 66 to Wardle Lock No 4 arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 6 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.11 lock/miles per hour. Went down to Middlewich followed through the locks by a Black Prince boat. Moored at the junction for water (25 minutes) and went across to the chandlery to by a new life belt (22.50). Moored for lunch just after Wardle Lock.

From Wardle Lock No 4 to Barbridge Junction arriving at 6:00 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 10 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.25 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 246 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 407 locks, averaging 2.06 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at Venetian Marina for 15 minutes to get a pumpout (10), a copy of Waterways World and some icecream. Moored Opposite the Olde Barbridge Inn where we had dinner (Stilton & Mushroom with Chips 3.95, Chicken with Mushrooms and Red Onions 8.95). A mainly sunny and cool day with some showers in the morning.

Saturday 9th June 2001

From Barbridge Junction to Nantwich Basin arriving at 10:25 am. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 3.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 247 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 407 locks, averaging 2.05 lock/miles per hour.

Moored on the begining of the visitor moorings just after the basin. Went shopping at Safeway's in Nantwich and had lunch on the boat. Handsel was moored nearby.

From Nantwich Basin to Audlem Lock No 24 arriving at 5:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 6.12 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 250 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 412 locks, averaging 2.04 lock/miles per hour.

Came up to Audllem behind a Charles Harden hire boat. Saw the first dog roses on bloom that I have seen this year. Moored opposite the Shroppie Fly. A mostly cloudy day with just a couple of brief light showers while we were cruising but some rain this evening.

Sunday 10th June 2001

From Audlem Lock No 24 to Market Drayton Bridge No 62 arriving at 1:35 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 30 minutes. 6.12 miles and 17 locks, averaging 5.14 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 255 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 429 locks, averaging 2.07 lock/miles per hour.

Quite a lot of boats on the Audlem Flight. When we got to the top the pound was low although there was still water being run down the flight from the feed paddle so I reported this to the BW hotline. Saw a kingfisher above Adderley Locks. Stopped just after the bridge and went to the Talbot for lunch (Roast Pork 5.95, Vegetable Lasagne 4.95).

From Market Drayton Bridge No 62 to Goldstone Bridge No 55 arriving at 5:15 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 3.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 257 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 434 locks, averaging 2.07 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at the top of the Tyrley Locks to fill with water but it was a very slow tap so we gave up after 30 minutes. Moored just before the bridge and the Wharf Inn. A mostly sunny day with more cloud in the morning.

Monday 11th June 2001

From Goldstone Bridge No 55 to Gnosall Bridge No 35 arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 10 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.86 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 260 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 434 locks, averaging 2.05 lock/miles per hour.

A pleasant trip through the cuttings and across the embankments of the Shropshire Union Canal. What a pity it has so many miles of linear moorings. Stopped on the visitor moorings for lunch.

From Gnosall Bridge No 35 to Brewood Bridge No 14 arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 8 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.84 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 264 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 435 locks, averaging 2.03 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for 15 minutes at Wheaton Aston for diesel (175.5 litres at 22.5p - 39.48). A lot of boats moored at Brewood but we just managed to fit in on the end of the moorings. A cloudy clool day.

Went shopping in Brewood before setting off this morning. Followed Sandalwood down to Autherley Junction. Stopped after Compton Lock for lunch.

From Wightwick Mill Lock No 30 to Wombourn Bridge No 43 arriving at 4:40 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 5 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.54 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 270 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 445 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Quite a few boats coming up the locks as we went down. At Bratch we were able to go straight into the top lock and were helped through by the lock keeper. Moored on the visitor moorings beyond Houndel Bridge. A warmer day, cloudy with some sunny periods.

Wednesday 13th June 2001

From Wombourn Bridge No 43 to Gothersley Lock No 14 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 3.62 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.58 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 273 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 453 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the locks behind the narrowboat Miah. Stopped for water at Greensforge Lock (20 minutes) where the tap had very high water pressure. Stopped for lunch at the site of Gothersley Roundhouse.

From Gothersley Lock No 14 to Wolverley Forge Bridge No 21 arriving at 5:20 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 45 minutes. 7.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.37 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 277 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 458 locks, averaging 2.01 lock/miles per hour.

Todays cruising has been very enjoyable with a great variety of scenery, wildlife, flora and architecture. Saw a kingfisher a little way before Stourton Junction. The weather has been mostly cloudy but warm. Stopped just before Wolverley Lock.

Thursday 14th June 2001

From Wolverley Forge Bridge No 21 to Limekiln Bridge No 17 arriving at 10:05 am. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 1.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.46 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 278 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 460 locks, averaging 2.01 lock/miles per hour.

Came down to Sainsbury's to do our shopping. I also went in the new Halford's and B&Q stores for a few things. Had lunch on the boat.

From Limekiln Bridge No 17 to Mitton Chapel Bridge No 7 arriving at 4:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 3.87 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.17 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 280 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 463 locks, averaging 2.01 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a knigfisher shortly before Round Hill Bridge. Miah was ahead of us at all the locks this afternoon. We moored shortly before Lower Mitton Bridge. A sunny start to the day but cloudy in the afternoon and it started to rain as we moored.

Friday 15th June 2001

From Mitton Chapel Bridge No 7 to Lenchford Ferry arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 5.37 miles and 6 locks, averaging 5.05 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 282 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 469 locks, averaging 2.01 lock/miles per hour.

Came down through York Street Lock and stopped to fill with water (20 minutes) before moving round to Stroudwater Cruisers, at the top of the narrow locks, for a pump out (10) which took 15 minutes in all. Came down the Severn to the Hampstall Inn where we moored for 30 minutes but decided not to have lunch there. Moored at the Lenchford Hotel for lunch (Vegetarian Lasagne and Lambs Liver with Onions, 8.50 for the two).

From Lenchford Ferry to Worcester Quay arriving at 3:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 7.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 5.32 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 284 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 471 locks, averaging 2.01 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the river with a Viking hire boat that started off from the Lenchford Hotel just before us. Moored just past Sabrina Footbridge by the racecourse. A mostly cloudy day with sunny periods and some heavy showers including hail and thunder.

Saturday 16th June 2001

From Worcester Quay to River Avon Junction arriving at 12:05 am. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 16.5 miles and 1 locks, averaging 5.53 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 287 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 472 locks, averaging 1.99 lock/miles per hour.

Did not stop at the junction but carried straight on for Gloucester.

River Severn to Gloucester & Sharpness Ship Canal

From River Avon Junction to Gloucester Docks arriving at 2:55 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 13.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.98 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 290 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 473 locks, averaging 1.97 lock/miles per hour.

A wet trip down the river. We had lunch on the move. Saw a good few boats coming up including Freyja, who we moored next to at Waltham Abbey last year, and Treble Joy. Phoned ahead when we got to the Upper Parting and the lock keeper had the lock ready for us when we arrived at 14.30. Moored in the dock. A mostly clody and wet day.

Sunday 17th June 2001

From Gloucester Docks to Junction with Old Line arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 15.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.81 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 294 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 473 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

Came down te whole canal to Sharpness. Saw a few Great Creasted Grebes and a some coots. The hotel boat Oliver Cromwell passed us at Fretherne Bridge. We turned at the junction and went back to just before the site of the old Severn Railway Bridge to moor for lunch etc. A mostly cloudy day.

Monday 18th June 2001

From Junction with Old Line to Gloucester Docks arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 15.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.81 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 298 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 473 locks, averaging 1.92 lock/miles per hour.

A good run back from Sharpness, passed the two Spirt of Freedom trip boats and a large barge as well as several smaller craft. While trying to brush some flies from my face I managed to flick my spectacles into the canal. Moored in the arm beside the Waterways Museum. Had lunch at the Deep Pan Pizza and went to collect the post (not there yet), order some new glasses and do some shopping. A warm and mostly sunny day.

Thursday 21st June 2001

From Gloucester Docks to Tewkesbury Lock arriving at 1:25 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 5 minutes. 13.37 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.52 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 302 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 474 locks, averaging 1.9 lock/miles per hour.

Started off from our mooring in Gloucester Dock at 8.30 but when we got to the lock we found we had to wait for 50 minutes while the Oliver Cromwell came down the channel and locked up into the dock. When we got into the lock we were let down very slowly and had to wait for the tide to turn before being let out onto the Severn, the whole process taking 30 minutes so it was 10 am before we left the lock. Got through Upper Lode Lock quite quickly and turned onto the Avon. At the Avon Lock we found that the lock keeper was at lunch until 2pm so we had our lunch while waiting on the lock mooring.

From Tewkesbury Lock to Eckington Bridge arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 7.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 6.33 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 304 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 476 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

Bought our 14 day licence for the Lower and Upper Avon at Tewksbury Lock (42). A good trip up the Avon with much better scenery than can be seen from the Severn. When we got through Eckington Bridge the only suitable mooring space for us was close to the bridge so we turned around and faced downstream to moor. A mostly sunny day a bit cool and cloudy in the morning but warmer and sunnier in the afternoon.

Friday 22nd June 2001

From Eckington Bridge to Fladbury Lock arriving at 2:10 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 50 minutes. 12.12 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.13 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 308 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 479 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Just after leaving Nafford Lock I saw a mink running across someones lawn then a few miles further on, before Pershore, I saw a fox cub. We stopped for water (15 minutes) above Wyre Lock. We passed a whole group of highland cattle, with claves, just before we moored at Craycombe Turn. A warm and sunny day.

Saturday 23rd June 2001

From Fladbury Lock to Evesham arriving at 10:50 am. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 4.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.86 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 310 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 481 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

At Chadbury Lock the LANT volunteers were manning the lock and helped us through. Just after the railway bridge, before Evesham, we turned the boat and got a pumpout (free) at the Environment Agency facilities (20 minutes). We moored just after Evesham Lock and went shopping at Somerfield.

From Evesham to George Billington Lock arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 1 hour 0 minutes. 4 miles and 0 locks, averaging 4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 311 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 481 locks, averaging 1.86 lock/miles per hour.

Moored above the lock for lunch. Saw Marenghi come past while we were having lunch, we last met the boat at Ripon but did not recognise the steerer today.

From George Billington Lock to Bidford Bridge arriving at 3:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 4.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.43 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 313 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 484 locks, averaging 1.86 lock/miles per hour.

Two Bidford narrowboats came out of IWA lock as we approached. We moored on outside the Frog and Bullrush had a drink and walked round the village.

Sunday 24th June 2001

A lot of boats and even more anglers out today. Moored just after the lock near Holy Trinity Church. Had dinner at Lambs of Sheep Street (Spinach & Ricotta Tortelloni 8.50, Rump of Lamb 11.50, desserts 4.50 each). Spoke to Jeremy Scanlon on Unicorn, moored in the basin. Monday 25th June 2001

Stopped to fill up with water (25 minutes) before coming off the Avon. There was a boat in front of us and one behind us (Old Rose) as we came up the Stratford Locks. Stopped just past the top lock and went to Tesco's for lunch (Chicken Tikka Masala and Vegetable Tikka Masala 3.49 each) and shopping.

Quite a few boats going up and down the Wilmcote Flight. Saw a Woodpecker near Wilmcote. Went for lunch at the Navigation Inn (Vegetable Curry & Chips and Chicken & Mushroom Pie 5.95 each).

From Wootton Wawen Aqueduct to Lowsonford Lock No 32 arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 3.62 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.85 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 326 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 514 locks, averaging 1.88 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the locks and moored between locks 33 and 32. Another hot and sunny day.

Stopped for water at Lowsonford. A lot of boats coming down the canal and dredging in progress at Lowsonford (above lock 30). Saw a frog in one of the locks. Did not stop at Kingswood Junction.

Some foot and mouth mooring restrictions at Turner's Green. Moored on the embankment past bridge 62, overlooking the pub at Rowington. Another warm and sunny day but with a cooling breeze and some cloudy patches.

Thursday 28th June 2001

From Rowington Hill Bridge No 62 to Budbrooke Junction arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 5.87 miles and 21 locks, averaging 7.01 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 334 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 546 locks, averaging 1.93 lock/miles per hour.

Set off at the same time as Norah SRN, who were moored a little way behind us, followed them through Shrewley Tunnel (very wet as usual) and came down the Hatton flight with them. Moored just before the junction and went into Warwick for lunch at the Tilted Wig (Chargrilled Salmon 6.95, Vegetable Lasagne 6.25). Bought a few items at Sainsbury's on the way back.

From Budbrooke Junction to Coventry Road Bridge No 49 arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 55 minutes. 1.25 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.55 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 335 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 548 locks, averaging 1.93 lock/miles per hour.

Filled with water at the top of Cape Locks (15 minutes) then came down the locks. Moored opposite Kate Boats. A day of sunshine and cloud with a couple of very brief showers.

Friday 29th June 2001

From Coventry Road Bridge No 49 to Emscote Bridge No 46 arriving at 10:00 am. The time taken was 20 minutes. 0.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 335 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 548 locks, averaging 1.93 lock/miles per hour.

Before setting off we spent 35 minutes backing across to Kate Boats to get a pumpout (12) and some gas (14.20). They also took a container of old engine oil for us. Stopped just before the bridge to go to Tesco's for our shopping.

From Emscote Bridge No 46 to Bishop Tachbrook Bridge No 41 arriving at 1:45 pm. The time taken was 35 minutes. 1.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.57 lock/miles per hour. After lunch we went down to Leamington and moored just after bridge 41. Went into town to pick up the new lenes for my glasses. A mostly cloudy day with a few sunny periods.

Saturday 30th June 2001

From Bishop Tachbrook Bridge No 41 to Stockton Bottom Lock No 12 arriving at 4:45 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 7.12 miles and 12 locks, averaging 5.74 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 339 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 560 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Met Rosemary and Ben at Lemington station at 12.43. Went through the locks with Willowweed from Weedon. We both moored at the Blue Lias. A mostly sunny day with a few showers in the morning.
