Thursday 1th June 2000

From to Bingley Station Bridge No 202 arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 3.25 miles and 8 locks, averaging 4.22 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 236 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 431 locks, averaging 2.25 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the many swing bridges. When we got to the five-rise Barry saw us down by ourselves. At the three-rise we joined a Snaygill hire boat - Saffron - for the descent. Moored just below the locks. A cloudy day with some light rain.

Friday 2th June 2000

From Bingley Station Bridge No 202 to Shipley Road Bridges No 207A arriving at 4:10 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 2.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. The Ian Hackett came to repair the upholstery on the bed settee at Bingley (45). Beryl went shopping and we left after lunch. A dull morning and a wet afternoon. Moored on the visitor moorings at Ashley Lane.

From Shipley Road Bridges No 207A to Horsforth Road Bridge No 216A arriving at 2:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 6.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.49 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 241 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 439 locks, averaging 2.23 lock/miles per hour.

The lock keeper helped us through Field Locks and we stopped for water at the top of Dobson Two Locks (55 minutes) very slow tap. Moored on the visitor moorings just past Rodley Swing Bridge. A Cloudy day with showers.

Sunday 4th June 2000

From Horsforth Road Bridge No 216A to Newlay Staircase Locks Nos 11 to 13 arriving at 83:0 pm. The time taken was 45 minutes. 1.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.16 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 242 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 439 locks, averaging 2.23 lock/miles per hour.

When we got to the top of Newlay Locks the Lock keeper advised us that the heavy overnight rain had caused the canal level to rise, and that the River Aire was flooding, so that he did not want anyone to go down to Leeds today. It might be possible to go tomorrow. We decided that it would be best to go back to Shipley and rang Eileen to tell her.

From Newlay Staircase Locks Nos 11 to 13 to Dobson Staircase Locks Nos 14 and 15 arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 4.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.69 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 244 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 441 locks, averaging 2.21 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher at Thornhill Bridge, No 214B. Moored for lunch a little way past the top lock.

From Dobson Staircase Locks Nos 14 and 15 to Shipley Road Bridges No 207A arriving at 4:45 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 3.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.79 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 246 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 444 locks, averaging 2.2 lock/miles per hour.

Moored at Ashley Lane again, next to Will O' the Wisp. Went to the Noble Comb for dinner (Tortella Ricotta 5.95, Chicken Tikka Masala 6.75). A mainly cloudy but dry day.

After spending another day at Ashley Lane Moorings, and picking up Pat and Eileen at Leeds Coach Station, Val, Colin, John and Susan arrived at about 11am. We went on the boat down to Saltaire Bridge and went to the Boathouse Inn for lunch (50.15 for seven meals - Colin did not eat).

After Val and co left we set off through the the locks back to Bingley. A day of sunshine and showers.

Wednesday 7th June 2000

From Bingley Station Bridge No 202 to Leache Bridge No 196 arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 3.25 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.86 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 251 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 455 locks, averaging 2.2 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the two Bingley staircases with Mr David - a 57.5 foot boat built by Warble on a Jonathan Wilson shell - a year old boat owned by a retired RSM and his wife who are permanently cruising. Filled with water (35 minutes) at the top lock. Stopped for lunch just before bridge 195.

From Leache Bridge No 196 to Skipton Junction arriving at 6:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 10.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.15 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 255 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 455 locks, averaging 2.18 lock/miles per hour.

Shared swing bridge operations with Wye Knot. Stopped at Silsden Boats for a pump out (10) for 15 minutes. Saw a deer in Farnhill Wood. Moored just past the junction. A dry day with sunshine and cloud.

From Skipton Junction to Higherland Lock No 32 arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.74 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 258 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 458 locks, averaging 2.16 lock/miles per hour.

Went round Skipton in the morning and had lunch on the boat. After lunch Beryl and Eileen walked over two miles and worked three swing bridges on the way. Turned and moored above the lock. A day of sunshine and cloud.

Friday 9th June 2000

From Higherland Lock No 32 to Holme Bridge Lock No 30 arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 1 miles and 2 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 259 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 460 locks, averaging 2.16 lock/miles per hour.

Went to the doctor with Eileen then set off, filling with water above Higherland Lock (30 minutes). Met Puffin coming up the lock. Stopped for lunch just past Highgate Swing Bridge.

From Holme Bridge Lock No 30 to Skipton Junction arriving at 3:55 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 25 minutes. 4 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.53 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 261 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 461 locks, averaging 2.15 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the remaining swing bridges and moored opposite the bus station. Went round the town. Eileen bought us fish and chips for dinner, which we ate on the boat. A mostly cloudy day with one or two showers.

Saturday 10th June 2000

From Skipton Junction to Leache Bridge No 196 arriving at 3:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 10.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.07 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 264 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 461 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

Saw Pat and Eileen off on the coach then went shopping at Morrison's. Set off after lunch. Moored just after Bridge 195. Had some problems with the bilge pump on switching off. A mostly sunny day.

Sunday 11th June 2000

From Leache Bridge No 196 to Bingley Station Bridge No 202 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 3.25 miles and 8 locks, averaging 4.35 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 267 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 469 locks, averaging 2.13 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at the top of the five rise for water (25 minutes). Barry saw us through the five and two other lock keepers worked us through the three. Both sets of Bingley locks together took us an hour. Moored for lunch on the visitor moorings.

The lock keeper helped us through the Dowley Gap locks and the trip boat Apollo came into Hirst Lock as we came out. Moored at Ashley Lane visitor moorings.

Monday 12th June 2000

From Field Staircase Locks Nos 16 to 18 to Horsforth Road Bridge No 216A arriving at 3:55 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 4.12 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.05 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 272 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 477 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the swing bridges with Molly May and waited while they filled with water at the top of Dobson Locks. Shared the locks and the rest of the swing bridges with them. Moored just past Rodley Swing Bridge. Did the 5298 hour service on the boat. Went to the Owl for dinner (my Chicken Tika Masala was OK - 6.95, but Beryl's Vegetarian Lasagne was very sloppy and it was not eaten or charged for). A cloudy start to a mostly sunny and windy day.

Tuesday 13th June 2000

From Horsforth Road Bridge No 216A to Office Lock No 2 arriving at 1:40 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 5 minutes. 5.87 miles and 11 locks, averaging 4.13 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 276 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 488 locks, averaging 2.13 lock/miles per hour.

Three lock keepers saw us quickly down Newlay Locks and another saw us down Forge Locks. Moored for water above Office Lock (15 minutes) then moored by the car park between the locks. Went into town for lunch at Da Marco's in the Headrow. Did some shopping then came back to the boat. A Sunny and windy day.

Wednesday 14th June 2000

From Office Lock No 2 to King's Road Lock No 3 arriving at 6:15 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 50 minutes. 13.5 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.66 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 281 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 497 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping at Safeways before lunch. In the afternoon we met up with Marenghi again and shared locks down to Castleford with them (they were bound for Ripon). Saw several Great Creasted Grebes on the way. Moored on the visitor moorings just below the lock. Mostly cloudy with a few showers in the morning.

Thursday 15th June 2000

From King's Road Lock No 3 to Waller Bridge arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 7.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 284 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 502 locks, averaging 2.11 lock/miles per hour.

Filled with water at King's Road Lock before setting off (20 minutes). Tried out our new walkie-talkies at Fall Ing Lock. Stopped for lunch at the Navigation (Chicken, Ham & Mushroom Pie 4.95, Veggie Spring Roll 3.50).

From Waller Bridge to Forge Lane Bridge arriving at 4:30 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 4.87 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.08 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 287 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 508 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

Shared Mill Bank Lock No 7 with a Shire boat. They turned down the Dewsbury Arm. Stopped on the visitor moorings. A cloudy morning but a sunny afternoon.

Friday 16th June 2000

From Forge Lane Bridge to Cooper Bridge Flood Gates arriving at 1:05 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 4.62 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 289 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 512 locks, averaging 2.11 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at Shepley Bridge Marina for water, pumpout (12) and to arrange to have the toilet leak fixed - which will be done on our return from the Rochdale Canal. Moored on the visitor moorings for lunch. Saw Angela and Graham in the afternoon and had dinner at the Royal & Ancient pub with them. A sunny day.

Saturday 17th June 2000

From Cooper Bridge Flood Gates to Brighouse Basin Entrance arriving at 11:25 am. The time taken was 1 hour 40 minutes. 2.37 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.82 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 291 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 516 locks, averaging 2.11 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher in Kirklees Cut. Stopped outside Sainsbury's and did some shopping there and in the town. Had lunch on the boat.

From Brighouse Basin Entrance to Elland Lock No 22 arriving at 4:30 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 2.75 miles and 5 locks, averaging 2.91 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 294 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 521 locks, averaging 2.11 lock/miles per hour.

Youngsters were swiming in two of the locks as we came up. Moored at Elland Bridge visitor moorings. A hot sunny day.

Sunday 18th June 2000

From Elland Lock No 22 to Junction with Halifax Branch (closed) arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 1.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 295 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 526 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

When we came Salterhebble bottom lock we could not get the gate to operate so we called out BW who managed to get it working but we are still not sure if it was working properly or not. This delayed us for 55 minutes. At the top of the locks we filled with water (25 minutes) then went to moor on the visitor mooring for lunch, etc. A hot sunny day.

Monday 19th June 2000

From Junction with Halifax Branch (closed) to Sowerby Bridge Basin arriving at 10:00 am. The time taken was 45 minutes. 2.12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 296 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 526 locks, averaging 2.11 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at Shire Cruisers for diesel but they had run out.

Saw Howard Mann at the Tuel Lane Lock before coming up the first two locks. Bought a seven day licence (33). Stopped at the Mytholmroyd moorings for lunch.

Went shopping at Hebden Bridge Co-op then filled with water before going through Blackpit Lock. A local ex-boater with his own windlass helped us through the two Stubbing Locks. Stopped for lunch just above the lock.

From Rawden Mill Lock No 12 to Shop Lock No 18 arriving at 4:40 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 3 miles and 6 locks, averaging 2.84 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 305 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 543 locks, averaging 2.1 lock/miles per hour.

Saw quite a few boats coming down the locks as we went up. Moored outside Todmorden Co-op, below the lock. A mostly cloudy day with sunny intervals and a few spots of rain.

Wednesday 21st June 2000

From Shop Lock No 18 to Travis Mill Lock No 28 arriving at 5:25 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 1.75 miles and 10 locks, averaging 3.07 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 309 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 553 locks, averaging 2.11 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping in the Co-op at Todmorden then had my hair cut. Set off after lunch. Moored by the Cross Keys and had dinner there (minted Lamb 4.25, Cheese Jacket Potato 2.35). Beryl was not amused. A showery day with very brief sunny intervals.

From Travis Mill Lock No 28 to Longlees Lock No 36 arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 1.5 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.35 lock/miles per hour. Filled with water at Travis Lock before setting off. Turned and moored just below the lock. Went to the Bird I' th Hand for lunch etc (Cheese & Tomato Quiche and Salmon Steak, 9.25 the two). A wet day.Longlees Lock No 36:  - 22nd June 2000.

Friday 23rd June 2000

From Longlees Lock No 36 to Smithyholme Lock No 25 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 2 miles and 11 locks, averaging 4.11 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 315 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 572 locks, averaging 2.13 lock/miles per hour.

All but two of the locks in our favour as they had filled up due to water coming over the top gates. Moored below the lock for lunch.

From Smithyholme Lock No 25 to Old Royd Lock No 17 arriving at 4:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 1.87 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.95 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 318 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 580 locks, averaging 2.14 lock/miles per hour.

Most locks in our favour again. We were watched by a group of two and three year olds as we came through Todmorden Lock. Moored just below Old Royd Lock for the night. Mostly cloudy with some brief sunny intervals and showers.

Saturday 24th June 2000

From Old Royd Lock No 17 to Blackpit Lock No 9 arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 3.62 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.49 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 321 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 588 locks, averaging 2.14 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 15 minutes for diesel at Pickwell & Arnold (144.5 litres @ 25p per litre. Charged 36). Met a Shire boat coming up the Stubbing Locks as we went down. Called for water at the facilities (30 minutes) then stopped on the visitor moorings. Had lunch at the White Lion Hotel (Quiche and Chicken in white wine, 4.95 each). Did some shopping at the Co-op.

From Blackpit Lock No 9 to Tuel Lane Lock No 3 arriving at 5:50 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.33 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 324 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 593 locks, averaging 2.14 lock/miles per hour.

Met three Shire Cruisers boats coming the opposite way in the pound above Tuel Lane Lock. Moored on the rings just before the fitness centre, above the lock. A mostly cloudy day.

From Tuel Lane Lock No 3 to Sowerby Bridge Basin arriving at 10:10 am. The time taken was 1 hour 0 minutes. 0.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 325 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 596 locks, averaging 2.14 lock/miles per hour.

Shared Tuel Lane and the last two Rochdale Canal locks with Millie Fleur - belonging to a couple from St Neots. Stopped in the basin for a pump out (10) but Shire Cruisers do not open until noon on Sunday. In the event they opened half an hour earlier so we had the pump out before lunch.

From Sowerby Bridge Basin to Long Lee Lock No 24 arriving at 2:45 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 2.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.14 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 327 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 599 locks, averaging 2.14 lock/miles per hour.

The time we stopped here is only approximate as our day's cruising came to an abrupt halt when the windlass slipped off the spindle as I was winding it up and caught me a blow in the mouth. The rest of the afternoon was taken up going from Halifax to Bradford hospitals and having my lip stitched up. A dry day of cloud and some sunny periods.

From Long Lee Lock No 24 to Cooper Bridge Flood Gates arriving at 1:45 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 20 minutes. 6.25 miles and 11 locks, averaging 3.98 lock/miles per hour. Got help from the lock keeper at Elland and Park Nook locks. He was waiting for a wide beam workboat that was coming the other way. Two boats from Strawberry Island Boat Club were coming up through Kirklees Low Lock as we arrived there. Moored on the visitor moorings and had lunch. Had dinner at the Royal & Ancient with Angela and Graeme. A fine day with sunshine and cloud.

From Cooper Bridge Flood Gates to Shepley Bridge Lock No 11 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 2.62 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.08 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 333 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 612 locks, averaging 2.14 lock/miles per hour.

Came down to Shepley Bridge Marina and filled with water. After lunch we had the toilet leak fixed (30).

Moored on the visitor moorings and went to The Gate pub in town for lunch (Gammon Steak 4.90, Coleslaw Jacket Potato 2.50). Went shopping at Morrison's and got a taxi back to the boat. A mostly cloudy day with some sunny periods.

Moored just past the flood lock and went into Castleford to have my stiches removed at the Health Centre. Beryl went shopping then we had some lunch.

Saw a lot of coal traffic today, a sand barge and an oil barge which follwed us through the open Ferrybridge lock. No moorings at Ferrybridge so we came down to the Jolly Miller Moorings here. A cloudy day but some sunshine this evening.
