Wednesday 1th September 1999

From to Kidderminster Lock No 6 arriving at 10:50 am. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 2.87 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.2 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 401 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 683 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

Moored at Saisbury's and did our shopping. Had lunch on the boat and then went into town to get Beryl a radio.

Came up the locks behind Cheshire Rose, queuesof two or three boats at all the locks. Spoke to the Booth's as we passed their house. Moored just above the lock again. A hot sunny day.

Thursday 2th September 1999

From Debdale Lock No 9 to Stewponey Lock No 13 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 4.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 406 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 690 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher just before Whittington Lock. Moored for water (40 minutes including waiting for the tap) above Kinver Lock where we talked to Denis on Absolute. Stopped below the lock and had lunch at the Stewponey Hotel (Chicken & Ham Pie and Roast Turkey 5.80 on a special 2 for 1 offer).

From Stewponey Lock No 13 to Hinksford Lock No 17 arriving at 5:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 4.25 miles and 4 locks, averaging 2.54 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 410 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 694 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

A lot of queuing for locks today. Moored just above the lock. A hot sunny day.

Friday 3th September 1999

From Hinksford Lock No 17 to Autherley Junction arriving at 5:15 pm. The time taken was 8 hours 5 minutes. 9.37 miles and 14 locks, averaging 2.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 418 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 708 locks, averaging 1.93 lock/miles per hour.

Another day of queing for locks, behind Olive Myrtle and Laura most of the time. We arrived at Bratch at 11.40 to find ourselves 7th in the queue. Had lunch during the wait - about an hour. Lady Lovelace followed behind us some way. Moored just before the Junction. A hot sunny day.

Saturday 4th September 1999

Came through the stop lock and up to the visitor moorings here. Went shopping in the village and then had lunch at the Admiral Rodney (Chicken & Mushroom Voulvent and Lamb Cutlets 7.95 each). Polly Otter moored in front of us.

Moored at a suitable spot, in the shade etc, a little way after the aqueduct. A hot sunny day.

Sunday 5th September 1999

From Watling Street Aqueduct to Gnosall Bridge No 35 arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 6.87 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.05 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 423 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 709 locks, averaging 1.91 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water (30 minutes) at Wheaton Aston then went to get diesel there but the garage did not open until 10am and there was already a boat there. It took 50 minutes before we had filled with 121.9 litres for 20.11. Went on and moored on the visitor moorings just after the tunnel. Walked down to the Navigation for lunch (Roast Beef and Roast Lamb 3.95 each and two Strawberry Dream Delights 1 each - special Sunday price).Cowley Tunnel No 33: Nb Laura - 5th September 1999.

Sunday 5th September 1999

From Gnosall Bridge No 35 to Goldstone Bridge No 55 arriving at 5:30 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 10 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.86 lock/miles per hour. Stopped for 15 minutes at Anglo-Welsh at Norbury Junction for a pump-out (10). Moored oppisite the Wharf Inn. A hot sunny day.

Monday 6th September 1999

From Goldstone Bridge No 55 to Market Drayton Bridge No 62 arriving at 10:25 am. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 3.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.93 lock/miles per hour. Moored just before the bridge and went to pick up the post in town. Had lunch at the Talbot (Seafood Pie 6.50, Gammon Steak 7.95).

From Market Drayton Bridge No 62 to Audlem Top Lock No 13 arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 4.87 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 430 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 720 locks, averaging 1.9 lock/miles per hour.

Caught up with Laura again as we came to the bottom of the Adderley Locks. Moored just before the top lock again. A hot sunny day but a cool breeze in the evening.

Tuesday 7th September 1999

From Audlem Top Lock No 13 to Audlem Lock No 24 arriving at 11:40 am. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 1.25 miles and 11 locks, averaging 5.25 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 433 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 731 locks, averaging 1.92 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the flight behind Laura and Tikopia. Spoke to Martin Grundy on Beatty, by the Shroppie Fly. Had lunch in the pub (Plaice and Chicken & Mushroom Pie 4.90 each, Pancakes with Maple Syrup and Jam Sponge Pudding 1.95 each).

From Audlem Lock No 24 to Nantwich Basin arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 6.12 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.04 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 435 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 736 locks, averaging 1.92 lock/miles per hour.

Filled with water outside the Shroppie Fly (30 minutes) then came on to moor just after the aqueduct. Saw a kingfisher on the way. A damp cloudy start but most of the day sunny with a fresh breeze.

Wednesday 8th September 1999

From Nantwich Basin to Swanley Lock No 6 arriving at 4:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 4.37 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.01 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 438 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 742 locks, averaging 1.92 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping at Safeway in Nantwich then had lunch on the boat before setting off. Came up the locks behind Maid of the Mist, who are going back to their mooring at Chirk. Moored just before Bethills Bridge. A sunny morning but a cloudy afternoon, windy.

Thursday 9th September 1999

From Swanley Lock No 6 to Willey Moor Lock No 12 arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 45 minutes. 8.37 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 442 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 748 locks, averaging 1.92 lock/miles per hour.

Saw two kingfishers this morning, the second just before Wrenbury. Travelled most of the way in front of an Anglo Welsh boat. Stopped just before the lock and had lunch at the Willey Moor Lock Tavern (Steak Pie 4.75, Chicken Curry 5.25).

From Willey Moor Lock No 12 to Tilstock Park Lift Bridge No 42 arriving at 5:30 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 6 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.22 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 445 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 755 locks, averaging 1.92 lock/miles per hour.

Came up Grindly Brook behind the same Anglo Welsh boat - Stretton. Filled with water at the top of the locks (15 minutes). Moored a little way after the bridge. A sunny day with a cooling breeze.

Friday 10th September 1999

From Tilstock Park Lift Bridge No 42 to Ellesmere Branch Junction arriving at 1:30 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 30 minutes. 8.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 449 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 755 locks, averaging 1.9 lock/miles per hour.

A lot of boats at the junction where they are holding a rally. Moored about half a mile beyond the junction for lunch etc. A cool sunny day.

Saturday 11th September 1999

From Ellesmere Branch Junction to Rhoswiel Bridge No 18 arriving at 1:20 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 9.37 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 453 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 756 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

Moored for water (20 minutes) above New Marton Locks. Narrow Escape followed us up the locks. Moored for lunch between bridges 18 and 19.

From Rhoswiel Bridge No 18 to Wenffrwd Bridge No 42 arriving at 5:55 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 7.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.08 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 457 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 756 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

A hard battle against the stream through the tunnels then a 20 minute wait to get across the aqueduct, due to the large number of hire boats starting off from Trefor. Moored at Sun Trefor Bridge, No 41, and had dinner at the pub (Fillet Steak & Stilton 11.95, Lamb 8.95, desserts 2.75 each). A day of sunshine and cloud with some showers this evening.

From Wenffrwd Bridge No 42 to Siambr Bridge No 45 arriving at 10:55 am. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 1.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 458 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 756 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Came up and found a space just beyond the water point. Did some shopping in town and had Sunday lunch at the Bridge End Hotel (3 courses for 6.50 each). A sunny morning but more cloud in the afternoon.

Monday 13th September 1999

From Siambr Bridge No 45 to New Marton Top Lock No 2 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 4 hours 55 minutes. 11.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.36 lock/miles per hour. Filled with water before setting off from Llangollen, turning and going back down. Moored for lunch just before the water points.

From New Marton Top Lock No 2 to Frankton Junction arriving at 4:05 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 3.62 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.08 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 464 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 757 locks, averaging 1.84 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the locks. Saw The Wee Cutler from Sheffield at the top lock. A lot of boats coming up but fewer going down the canal. Moored just before the junction. A day of sunshine and cloud, chilly in the morning but warming up after lunch.

Tuesday 14th September 1999

Tuesday 14th September 1999

Came back up and had to wait at the top four locks as other boats were going up and down. Did not stop at the junction.

Saw a kingfisher near Bettisfield Bridge. Moored some way before the bridge and had dinner on the boat. A warm sunny day.

Stopped 15 minutes at Viking Afloat for a pumpout (10). Moored just after the bridge for lunch etc. A rainy morning but a sunny afternoon.

Friday 17th September 1999

From New Mills Lift Bridge No 31 to Wrenbury Lift Bridge No 20 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 7.12 miles and 10 locks, averaging 5.27 lock/miles per hour. Stopped for water (25 minutes) at the top of Grndley Brook Locks. Moored just before the swing bridge and went to the Dusty Miller for lunch (Smoked Haddock 8.95, Gammon & Egg 7.95).

From Wrenbury Lift Bridge No 20 to Hurleston Top Lock No 4 arriving at 5:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 6 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 482 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 782 locks, averaging 1.83 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the locks behind a Valley Cruisers hire boat from Atherstone, they are out for four weeks. Spent 15 minutes mooring just past Martin's Bridge then decided we were too much aground so moved on to moor at the top of the locks. A mostly sunny day with some cloudy intervals and one very light shower.

Saturday 18th September 1999

From Hurleston Top Lock No 4 to Nantwich Basin arriving at 10:40 am. The time taken was 1 hour 15 minutes. 2.12 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.9 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 483 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 786 locks, averaging 1.83 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the Hurleston locks and met Rahja Brooks and Dourf II coming up the main line. They were about to turn to go back as Margaret Froud was not well. We moored just before the aqueduct and went into town for some shopping and lunch at the Vine Inn (Roast Lamb 5.25 each and Hot Toffee Pudding 2.75 and Rhubarb & Ginger Crumble 2.75).

From Nantwich Basin to Audlem Lock No 24 arriving at 5:05 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 6.12 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 486 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 791 locks, averaging 1.83 lock/miles per hour.

Passed Cheshire Rose moored at Nantwich then Martin Grundy, at the helm of Betty, coming the opposite way. Dourf II and Rahja Brooks were moored above Hack Green Locks. There was no mooring space after the first two Audlem Locks so we came up thethird and moored opposite the Shroppie Fly. A dull and windy day with a couple of light showers.

Rained all day so we stayed put and had dinner at the Shroppie Fly (Chicken Korma 5.20, Steak & Kidney Pie 4.95, Apple & Cinnamon Sponge and Toffee Merangie 1.95 each).

Monday 20th September 1999

Filled with water (30 minutes) before setting off up the locks. Moored just above the top lock for lunch.

Moored on the visitor moorings, just squeezed in between two boats, as the rain started. A mostly cloudy day with rain early in the day and as we moored this afternoon but dry for most of the trip.

Did shopping at Safeways and had lunch on the boat before setting off from Market Drayton. Moored at Anchor Bridge, No 42. A mostly sunny day.

From Shebdon Aqueduct to Watling Street Aqueduct arriving at 1:40 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 25 minutes. 12.87 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.14 lock/miles per hour. At 12.05 we stopped for ten minutes at the garage at Wheaton Aston for Diesel (113.8 litres 18.78). then stopped for water (25 minutes) before the lock. Saw a very bold kingfisher in the wooded section after the lock. Moored for lunch, etc, just before the aqueduct. A cloudy morning and a wet afternoon.

Green Dolphin, the boat of the ex-BW man from Braunston, followed us through the last two locks on the Staffs & Worcs. A wet finish to a mostly wet day. Moored just before the bridge.

Saturday 25th September 1999

From Wolseley Bridge No 70 to Rugeley Bridge No 66 arriving at 10:00 am. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 2.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.65 lock/miles per hour. Moored just past the bridge, went to collect the post and did some shopping, including some at Safeways. Had lunch on the boat.

From Rugeley Bridge No 66 to Fradley Junction arriving at 5:40 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 7.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.15 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 516 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 831 locks, averaging 1.8 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the locks and turned at the junction. Lots of boats on the visitor moorings here but we found a space next to Green Dolphin. Went to the Swan for dinner (Gammon Steak 6.75, Cottage Pie 5.35, Lemon Torte 2.20 each). A mostly sunny day but we had a thundery shower while we were in the Swan.

Sunday 26th September 1999

Saw Prince as we went through Whittington. Moored just before Hopwas School Bridge and went to the Red Lion for Sunday Lunch (Roast Pork 4.95 each).

Stopped at the BW information centre, just before the junction, for water (25 minutes). Moored just after the junction. A day of sunshine, cloud and a couple of showers.

Monday 27th September 1999

From Fazeley Junction to Polesworth (Mill Bridge No 53) arriving at 12:05 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 5.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.33 lock/miles per hour. Stopped at the top of Glascote Locks for a pumpout (10) and gas (11.25). I also got rid of my old engine oil and rang Fred (25 minutes in total). Moored on the visitor moorings just after the bridge for lunch.

From Polesworth (Mill Bridge No 53) to Atherstone Lock No 11 arriving at 3:05 pm. The time taken was 50 minutes. 3 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.6 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 524 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 833 locks, averaging 1.78 lock/miles per hour.

Came down to moor just past Bradley Green Bridge. Fred & Joyce came to see us in the evening. A mostly cloudy day with some sunhine and showers.

Tuesday 28th September 1999

Quite a few boats coming down the locks as we went up. Moored and went to the Whte Bear for lunch (Chicken Keiv 3.65 each - very good value) then did our shopping in Somerfield's.

From Atherstone Top Lock No 1 to Hartshill Wharf arriving at 4:20 pm. The time taken was 50 minutes. 2.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.9 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 527 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 844 locks, averaging 1.79 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water (20 minutes) then went through the bridge to moor. A sunny morning but cloudy for most of the afternoon.

Wednesday 29th September 1999

Saw some long tailed tits and a jay on the way down. Water Knight was moored at Maston Junction. We moored at the first spot on the visitor moorings for lunch etc. A day of sunshine, cloud and some heavy showers.

Thursday 30th September 1999

Moved down to the water point before the junction and filled with water (30 minutes) before going through the stop lock. Large stretches of the canal covered with thick duckweed. Moored on the piling after the bridge and went to the Raven in Brinklow for lunch (Steak & Ale Pie 3.95, Chicken Tika Marsala 4.75).
