Moored between locks 4 and 5 and went to the Sampson and Lion for lunch (Minestrone soup and Roast Pork Sunday lunch 5 each).

Moored about half a mile after the junction. A hot and sunny morning but the rain started shortly after we set off this afternoon and continued nearly all of the rest of the day.

Moored just above the lock. A warm day with hazy sun and some showers.

Moored outside Sainsbury's and did our shopping there. After lunch we went shopping in town. A showery morning.

From Kidderminster Lock No 6 to Oldington Bridge No 10 arriving at 5:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 2.37 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.93 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 312 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 536 locks, averaging 2.03 lock/miles per hour.

A dry but mostly cloudy run down through the three locks. Moored between bridges 10 and 9.

Wednesday 4th August 1999

From Oldington Bridge No 10 to York Street Lock No 3 arriving at 10:40 am. The time taken was 50 minutes. 1.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.24 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 313 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 536 locks, averaging 2.03 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped below the lock for a pumpout (12). Had to wait some time as the boat in front had a blockage. Took 40 minutes in all.

From York Street Lock No 3 to Stourport Junction arriving at 12:05 am. The time taken was 45 minutes. 0.12 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.16 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 314 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 539 locks, averaging 2.03 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the narrow locks and stopped at the sanitary pontoon on the river for water (20 minutes) and had a quick lunch while it was filling.

From Stourport Junction to Worcester Quay arriving at 4:45 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 12.37 miles and 3 locks, averaging 5.27 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 317 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 542 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Had a long wait at Lincombe Lock (1 hour 25 minutes) due to a backlog of boats waiting to go through. They had had problems earlier with a broken down trip boat. Moored by the racecourse. A hot day with sunshine and cloud.

River Severn to Worcester and Birmingham Canal

Thursday 5th August 1999

From Worcester Quay to Sidbury Lock No 3 arriving at 10:50 am. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 1.12 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 318 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 544 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the Diglis locks with a hire boat from Stratford. Moored below the lock and went to get the post. Had lunch at the Old Talbot Hotel (Chicken, Ham & Leek Pie 5.95 each) then went shopping. We also visited the Royal Worcester exhibition and museum (4.50 each). A warm sunny day.

Friday 6th August 1999

From Sidbury Lock No 3 to Oddingley Bridge No 27 arriving at 1:20 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 20 minutes. 6.12 miles and 14 locks, averaging 4.64 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 322 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 558 locks, averaging 2.04 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the locks, Beryl taking the boat, and moored between bridges 26 and 27 for lunch etc. A mostly warm and cloudy day with showers in the afternoon.

Saturday 7th August 1999

From Oddingley Bridge No 27 to Stoke Salt Works Bridge No 42 arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 5.25 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.22 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 325 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 564 locks, averaging 2.04 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped opposite Brookline Boats ffor water (20 minutes, 30p). Came up the locks and moored on the visitor moorings by the Boat & Railway pub. Had lunch on the boat.

From Stoke Salt Works Bridge No 42 to Stoke Prior Top Lock No 28 arriving at 3:05 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 1.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.33 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 326 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 569 locks, averaging 2.05 lock/miles per hour.

The boats were moored five deep at the Black Prince base as we came by. Mooredon the visitor moorings opposite the Queens Head, where we had dinner at their carvery (6.25 each). A cloudy morning but a sunny afternoon.

Sunday 8th August 1999

From Stoke Prior Top Lock No 28 to Alvechurch Bridge No 60 arriving at 3:25 pm. The time taken was 6 hours 5 minutes. 5.25 miles and 31 locks, averaging 5.96 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 332 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 600 locks, averaging 2.1 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the Tardebigge flight behind Emily, a boat from the Bridgewater Canal. Got held up at lock 36 due to the number of boats coming down. A woman on a Brookline boat, coming down the flight, broke a bone in her foot and was taken off in an ambulance at bridge 51. Moored between bridges 59 and 60 for a very late lunch. A cloudy day with rain in the afternoon.

Monday 9th August 1999

From Alvechurch Bridge No 60 to King's Norton Junction arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 5.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.65 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 334 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 600 locks, averaging 2.09 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping at the All Day and other shops in Alvechurch. Wast Hill tunnel rather misty, we passed an Anglo Welsh boat coming through. Stopped just before the junction for water and lunch.

From King's Norton Junction to Bridge No 16 arriving at 4:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 6.62 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.15 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 337 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 601 locks, averaging 2.08 lock/miles per hour.

Followed another narrowboat through the lift bridge and tunnel. Moored just before bridge 15. A lot of new houses being built around here. The rain stopped before we went shopping this morning and the cloud gradually cleared giving a sunny afternoon.

Tuesday 10th August 1999

From Bridge No 16 to Lapworth Top Lock No 2 arriving at 12:10 am. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 4.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.79 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 339 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 602 locks, averaging 2.07 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped above the locks and walked down. Saw Frank and Gill on Fragill and went to the Boot for Lunch (Sirlion Steak and salad 13.45, Stuffed Chicken and vegtables 12.60). On the way back we talked to an actor from Eastenders who was on a cruiser called Flaurie. Near the top of the locks we met Audrey Smith on Muffin. A cool cloudy day.

Wednesday 11th August 1999

From Lapworth Top Lock No 2 to Kingswood Junction arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 1.75 miles and 18 locks, averaging 6.24 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 342 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 620 locks, averaging 2.1 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the locks during the partial eclipse but it didn't get really dark, just gloomy. Stopped for water (25 minutes) by bridge 35. Moored for lunch below lock 21 and went to the Navigation (Lamb Cutletts 8.95 each).

From Kingswood Junction to Rowington Lock No 30 arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 1.75 miles and 9 locks, averaging 5.16 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 344 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 629 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the locks accompanied by a pack of mink hunters. Stopped to go shopping below the lock but the store seems to have disappeared. A day of sunshine and cloud.

Thursday 12th August 1999

From Rowington Lock No 30 to Wootton Wawen Aqueduct arriving at 1:35 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 45 minutes. 4.25 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.27 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 348 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 637 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

Went through the first lock but found the second (No 32) was out of action due to a faulty paddle, BW were fixing it. After half an hour (not included in cruising time) the paddle was fixed and we were fourth in line for the lock. Stopped just before bridge 53 and walked into the village. Had lunch at the Bulls Head pub (Pork Cutlet 8.25, Salmon & Crab Fish Cakes 8.50) then went to the village store and the farm shop to stock up.

From Wootton Wawen Aqueduct to Wilmcote Bridge No 59 arriving at 4:55 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 3.37 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.91 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 349 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 638 locks, averaging 2.11 lock/miles per hour.

Moored some way before the bridge as there were a lot of boats moored here. A mostly cloudy day.

Friday 13th August 1999

From Wilmcote Bridge No 59 to Stratford Top Lock No 52 arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 3 miles and 13 locks, averaging 5.33 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 352 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 651 locks, averaging 2.13 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water at bridge 53 (20 minutes) then for a pump out (8) at the new Stratford Court Cruisers base just before the lock. Moored just before the lock and had lunch. Went shopping at Tesco's and later I went into town. A mostly cloudy day.

Sunday 15th August 1999

From Stratford Top Lock No 52 to Stratford-upon-Avon Lock No 56 arriving at 10:35 am. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 0.62 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.26 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 353 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 655 locks, averaging 2.13 lock/miles per hour.

After stopping 2 nights we came down the locks and on to the Avon (no room in the basin as usual) did not stop at the junction.

Stratford upon Avon Canal to Upper Avon

We stopped on the water point to fill up (25 minutes) and in the meantime I went to Stratford Marina to get a 15 day licence (15 special IWA Festival rate). Had lunch at the Shakespeare Hotel (3 courses for 14.95 each). A cloudy day with sunny periods.

Tuesday 17th August 1999

From Stratford Bridge to Binton Bridge arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 5.12 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.25 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 356 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 658 locks, averaging 2.13 lock/miles per hour.

After stopping two nights at Stratford to pick up Angela and Rosemary we set off down river. Stopped for water at Luddington lock (25 minutes for water and an extra 15 minutes for coffee). Had lunch at the Four Alls (Jumbo Cod 7.25, Venison Pie 8.25, 2 Vegetable Curries 5.75 each).

From Binton Bridge to Robert Aickman Lock arriving at 5:30 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 8.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.91 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 359 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 663 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

No mooring space at Bidford so came down to moor above the lock here. Saw two kingfishers today. A wet morning but drier this afternoon.

Wednesday 18th August 1999

Got held up at Fladbury Lock by a cruiser that had broken down in the lock. Moored just above the lock. A day of cloud, sunshine and some heavy showers.

Thursday 19th August 1999

Filled with water above Wyre Lock (25 minutes) before setting off. Moored by the park and walked up to the station. Had lunch in the Coventry Arms, by the station, (Drinks and rolls at 75 pence each). Saw Angela and Rosemary off on the !3.01 and got the bus back to Pershore where we did our shopping in the Co-op.

From Pershore Lock to Eckington Bridge arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 0 minutes. 7 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 367 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 669 locks, averaging 2.09 lock/miles per hour.

A good run down the river. Saw a kingfisher. A day of sunshine and cloud.

Friday 20th August 1999

From Eckington Bridge to Tewkesbury Lock arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 7.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.96 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 369 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 671 locks, averaging 2.09 lock/miles per hour.

Did 4679 hours service before setting off. Stopped at Tewkesbury Marina for 25 minutes to get diesel (27.60 for 100 litres) and pumpout (10). Saw Louisa. Moored above the lock and had lunch at the Olde Black Bear (Sirlion Steak 7.95, Cajan Chicken 6.95).

From Tewkesbury Lock to Gloucester & Berkley Ship Canal Junction arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 13.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 5.03 lock/miles per hour. Came through the Avon lock behind two cruisers, which we had to wait for. Got through Upper Lode Lock at about 14.45 and were in Glouster Lock at 16.50.

River Severn to Gloucester & Sharpness Ship Canal

From Gloucester & Berkley Ship Canal Junction to Llanthony Road Bridge arriving at 5:40 pm. The time taken was 35 minutes. 0.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 0.63 lock/miles per hour. Came up through the lock but there was no mooring space in the basin and the bridge was not due to open for 15 minutes. We moored alongside Ohtori, who we moored beside at Salford Quays last year. Moored on the pontoons the other side of the bridge. A mostly sunny day.

Saturday 21st August 1999

Saw a great Creasted Grebe near Saul. Stopped for water at Fretherne Bridge (35 minutes - the hose came apart and we had to unreel it all and refix the inner end). Passed Muffin and Faith. Moored a little way after the bridge for lunch etc. A sunny day.

Sunday 22nd August 1999

From Splatt Bridge to Patch bridge arriving at 12:10 am. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 9.12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.77 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 377 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 672 locks, averaging 2.04 lock/miles per hour.

Went down to the old line junction where we turned and came back to moor just before the bridge. Went to the Tudor Arms for lunch (Roast Beef and Roast Lamb 5.25 each, Applle Pie and Banoffee Pie 2.65 each).

Went shopping in Frampton and had lunch before setting off. Filled with water (25 minutes) at Frentherne Bridge then came on to moor a little way before the bridge. Walked down to Epney and had dinner at the Anchor (Steak, Kidney and Guinness Pie 5.75, Pork in Cider 5.95). A mostly sunny day.

Tuesday 24th August 1999

From Parkend Bridge to Llanthony Road Bridge arriving at 3:10 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 5.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 381 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 672 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

A rainy morning so we stayed put until after lunch. Moored just before the bridge for a pumpout (5). No room on the visitors pontoon or in the dock so we moved across to moor oposite the facilities. A cloudy day but dry in the afternoon.

Wednesday 25th August 1999

From Llanthony Road Bridge to Tewkesbury Lock arriving at 6:35 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 10 minutes. 13.62 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 386 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 673 locks, averaging 2 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping at Sainsbury's in Gloucester then filled with water. Set off to be ready for the bridge and lock opening at 13.30. Had to wait for the lock as the trip boat King Arthur was coming up. Got through the lock at 14.15 and came up to the Avon (saw a kingfisher on the way). No moorings below the lock so we came up onto the river and moored just before the marina. A very wet trip up the Severn but a sunny finish to the day.

Thursday 26th August 1999

From Tewkesbury Lock to Worcester Quay arriving at 3:10 pm. The time taken was 6 hours 10 minutes. 16.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 392 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 674 locks, averaging 1.97 lock/miles per hour.

Had a long wait for the lock at Tewksbury so did not get back on the Severn until after 10. Had lunch on the move and stopped for water above Diglis Lock. Moored in our allotted place and booked in. A day of sunshine and cloud plus a few brief and light showers.Worcester Quay: Boats moored at the festival - 28th August 1999.

After 5 nights at the festival moored with Greenham Mist, Jack and Cheshire Rose we set off up river. Moored at the Hampstall Inn for lunch (Steak & Kidney Pie and Lamb & Leek Pie 4.95 each).

From Hampstall Ferry to Bullock Lane Bridge No 9 arriving at 6:00 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 3.87 miles and 4 locks, averaging 1.97 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 399 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 680 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

Filled with water at Lincombe Lock (25 minutes) then went on to Stourport. Had a long wait to get into the narrow locks then an even longer wait to get through York Street Lock. Beryl went shopping while I waited. Moored between bridges 9 and 10 again. A day of sunshine and cloud.
