Tuesday 1th June 1999

From to Aynho Bridge No 190 arriving at 11:35 am. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 4.12 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.95 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 59 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 93 locks, averaging 3.25 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the first two locks behind Rhiannon and shared Aynho Weir Lock with them. Stopped at the wharf for deisel (28.41 for 129.13 litres) and gas (11.25) but they could not do a pumpout. Got Ian to repair our gas locker hatch (20) while we went to the pub for lunch (Chicken Chasseur 6 each).

From Aynho Bridge No 190 to Allen's Lock No 36 arriving at 5:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 4.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.58 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 62 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 96 locks, averaging 3.14 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just before Lower Heyford village, on some new piling. A sunny day.

Wednesday 2th June 1999

From Allen's Lock No 36 to Dashwood's Lock No 37 arriving at 11:40 am. The time taken was 1 hour 15 minutes. 2.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 63 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 97 locks, averaging 3.1 lock/miles per hour.

Set off at 9.30 and took 15 minutes to get down to Oxfordshire Narrowboats for a pumpout (9) then crossed over to the water point by Lower Heyford Bridge where we took 30 minutes to fill with water. After the lock a heavy downpour prompted us to make a early stop for lunch.

From Dashwood's Lock No 37 to Thrupp Bend arriving at 5:05 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 6.25 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.42 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 66 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 101 locks, averaging 3.02 lock/miles per hour.

A dry journey this afternoon. Met some other boats as we came through the locks but no real queues today. Saw Ollie Owl again at Thrupp. Moored on the visitor moorings just past the swing bridge. A mostly cloudy day with som sunshine and showers.

Thursday 3th June 1999

From Thrupp Bend to Isis Lock No 46 arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 6.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.54 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 69 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 106 locks, averaging 2.95 lock/miles per hour.

A good trip down but one or two showers. BW were working on Dukes lock. Moored just before the lock then went into the city for lunch at Caffe Uno. Did shopping at Sainsbury's. A cloudy and wet start to the day but drier and some sunshine in the afternoon.

Saturday 5th June 1999

From Isis Lock No 46 to Abingdon Lock arriving at 11:10 am. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 9 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 72 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 110 locks, averaging 2.9 lock/miles per hour.

After two nights at Oxford we set off through Isis Lock and on to Osney where the lock keeper was just arriving to open the lock. Got a two day licence (36.20). The river running quite fast, amber boards at the lock. Saw Cutty Wren moored below Folly Bridge. Went through Sandford Lock with a Salter's trip boat, a narrowboat and a rowing eight. Stopped for water at Abingdon where we saw Skitty Kitty a blue Warble boat.

From Abingdon Lock to Wallingford Bridge arriving at 3:05 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 13.5 miles and 4 locks, averaging 5.12 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 75 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 114 locks, averaging 2.82 lock/miles per hour.

Had lunch on the move as we came down the river. Moored just before the bridge. A Sunny start to the day gave way to increasing clouds with a few showers.

Sunday 6th June 1999

From Wallingford Bridge to Tilehurst Station arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 13.5 miles and 4 locks, averaging 5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 79 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 118 locks, averaging 2.75 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the locks with Florence a narrowboat from Braunston. Stopped by the moorings for Beethovens and had a very good three course Sunday Lunch for 11.50 each.

From Tilehurst Station to High Bridge, Reading arriving at 4:30 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 4.37 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.02 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 81 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 120 locks, averaging 2.72 lock/miles per hour.

A strong current as we turned on to the Kennet. Went through Blakes Lock with Legacy, no lock keeper there. Moored by the prison next to the Rag Doll, which was being used for filming Rosie & Jim. Florence also joined us on the moorings. A mainly sunny day but some cloud and windy gusts.

Monday 7th June 1999

From High Bridge, Reading to Burghfield Village Road Bridge arriving at 3:30 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 3.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.69 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 83 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 123 locks, averaging 2.67 lock/miles per hour.

Collected the post and went shopping at Sainsbury's in Reading. Had lunch on the boat. A lot of new buildings nearing completion before County Lock. Moored by the Cunning Man. A cloudy day with some sunshine and showers.

Wednesday 9th June 1999

From Burghfield Village Road Bridge to Tyle Mill Lock No 99 arriving at 12:00 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 4.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.22 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 85 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 128 locks, averaging 2.66 lock/miles per hour.

After spending two nights at Burghfield (Val, Colin and Susan visiting us on the boat and having dinner with us at the Cunning Man) we set off and stopped before the lock and swing bridge for water.

From Tyle Mill Lock No 99 to Padworth Lock No 96 arriving at 2:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 15 minutes. 2 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.2 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 86 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 130 locks, averaging 2.65 lock/miles per hour.

Saw two stoats as we came through Ufton Swing Bridge, one of them jumping into the water. Moored for lunch just before Padworth Swing bridge.Garston Lock No 102:  - 9th June 1999.

Wednesday 9th June 1999

From Padworth Lock No 96 to Woolhampton Mill Lock No 94 arriving at 4:35 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 2 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 88 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 132 locks, averaging 2.62 lock/miles per hour.

After coming through Padworth Lock we saw the Ragdoll and the film crew again. Aldermaston swing bridge was not working properly and was opened (slowly) for us by the men working on it. Moored just before the swing bridge. Had dinner at the Rowbarge (Salmon 10.95, Chicken Balti 9.95). A mostly sunny day but cloudy periods.

Thursday 10th June 1999

From Woolhampton Mill Lock No 94 to Greenham Lock No 86 arriving at 2:55 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 50 minutes. 6 miles and 8 locks, averaging 2.9 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 93 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 140 locks, averaging 2.57 lock/miles per hour.

Ragdoll were filming by the Woolhampton Swing bridge this mornining. Most of the locks against us on the way up. Passed a few Reading Marine hire boats and a couple of others on the way. Stopped just before Newbury road bridge and went to Sainsbury's for lunch and shopping.

From Greenham Lock No 86 to Newbury Lock No 85 arriving at 6:20 pm. The time taken was 35 minutes. 0.5 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 93 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 141 locks, averaging 2.57 lock/miles per hour.

Came up through Newbury lock and swing bridge with Florence. Moored just before the pipe bridge. A mostly cloudy day.

Friday 11th June 1999

From Newbury Lock No 85 to Kintbury Lock No 78 arriving at 1:25 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 6 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.39 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 97 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 148 locks, averaging 2.54 lock/miles per hour.

Started off at 9.25 an at d came up to Kintbury, catching up with Florence (who had started off 30 minutes before us) as they left Hamstead Lock with another boat. Filled with water in the lock at 12.50, it took 20 minutes and we filled the lock at the same time. Moored past Vicarage Bridge for lunch etc. A mostly cloudy day with sunny intervals.

Saturday 12th June 1999

From Kintbury Lock No 78 to Picketfield Lock No 71 arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 5 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.43 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 101 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 155 locks, averaging 2.52 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a mole at Wire Lock. Passed a few boats coming down. Saw Florence moored at Hungerford. Stopped for lunch immediately above the lock mooring.

From Picketfield Lock No 71 to Burnt Mill Lock No 65 arriving at 5:05 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 2.62 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.23 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 103 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 161 locks, averaging 2.51 lock/miles per hour.

Passed a few Bruce Trust wide boats coming down the locks. Waited 10 minutes for the Cruiser David's Dream (from St Neots) at Little Bedwyn lock and came up the last few locks with them. Tried to moor above Potter's Lock again but too Shallow. Moored just after the lock but still rather shallow. A mostly cloudy day with brief sunny spells.

Sunday 13th June 1999

From Burnt Mill Lock No 65 to Crofton Top Lock No 55 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 3 miles and 10 locks, averaging 4.59 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 106 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 171 locks, averaging 2.54 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the locks with a boat from Newbury called Evening Shadows. Saw another mole at one of the Crofton Locks. Moored just after Wolfhall Bridge for lunch.

From Crofton Top Lock No 55 to Heathy Close Lock No 52 arriving at 4:05 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 2.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.29 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 108 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 174 locks, averaging 2.53 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the tunnel and down the first 3 locks. Moored just above the bottom lock on the new visitor moorings. Filled with water and then went down to the Royal Oak to book a table for dinner. Had dinner at the Royal Oak (Plaice 8.50, Lamb Cutlets 9.50). A day of cloud and sunshine.

Monday 14th June 1999

From Heathy Close Lock No 52 to Honey Street Wharf arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 7.5 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 111 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 175 locks, averaging 2.47 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the bottom lock at Wootton Rivers and down the long pound. Saw the couple from March moored at Pewsey Wharf. Stopped for half an hour at Honey Street Wharf to get a pumpout (10) and spoke to the woman we met 2 years ago on Mary. They have a new boat now. Moved on to have lunch at the Barge (Ham and eggs 5, Cod 4.50).

From Honey Street Wharf to Devizes Top Lock No 50 arriving at 4:55 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 8 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.09 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 114 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 176 locks, averaging 2.42 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the rest of the pound, the second swing bridge (133?) now out of action. Saw a knigfisher just past Horton Bridge. Moored a little way before the lock and went shopping ay Tesco's. A day of sunshine and cloud with a couple of light showers this afternoon.

Tuesday 15th June 1999

From Devizes Top Lock No 50 to Sells Green Bridge arriving at 1:20 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 45 minutes. 3 miles and 28 locks, averaging 5.39 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 119 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 204 locks, averaging 2.54 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the first 6 locks by ourselves then joined up with Evening Shadows to do locks 44 to 22. Three boats went down and seven came up. Moored by the bridge and had lunch at the Three Magpies (Gammon Steak 4.95, Ham and Egg 4.50). A warm and mostly sunny day.

Wednesday 16th June 1999

From Sells Green Bridge to Semington Bottom Lock No 15 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 4 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.38 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 123 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 211 locks, averaging 2.53 lock/miles per hour.

Set off in front of two Anglo Welsh hire boats from Bristol and opened the first swing bridge for them. Went through the Seend flight with one of them, Tulip. Went down the Semington locks alone and moored for lunch at the bottom.

From Semington Bottom Lock No 15 to Bradford-on-Avon Lock No 14 arriving at 4:05 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 5 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 125 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 212 locks, averaging 2.49 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just past the new bridge and before the lock. Went shopping at Budgens. A hot sunny day.

Filled with water above Bradford on Avon Lock. Passed Unity, from Walsham Lock on the Wey, coming out of the lock. Moored just before the George for lunch etc. A mostly cloudy day but with some long sunny spells this morning.

Friday 18th June 1999

From Bathampton Bridge to Bath Old Bridge arriving at 12:00 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 2.5 miles and 6 locks, averaging 2.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 131 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 218 locks, averaging 2.42 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the locks and moored on the river below Pultney Weir, ready to meet Rosemary. Did shopping at Waitrose and had lunch. In the afternoon visited No 1 Royal Cresent and the Georgian Garden. Went to Caffe Martini for dinner (49.80 for 3 including sweets and two bottles of wine). A fine sunny day.

Saturday 19th June 1999

From Bath Old Bridge to Bath Old Bridge arriving at 3:30 pm. The time taken was 20 minutes. 0 miles and 0 locks, averaging 0 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 131 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 218 locks, averaging 2.41 lock/miles per hour.

Went to the Roman Baths and Abbey with Rosemary then we went to Lunch at the Wife of Bath (36.05 for 3 drinks, main courses, sweets and coffee), very good. Moved from the weir to the moorings past the station before Rosemary caught the 17.28 home. A cloudy day with one light shower around 9am.

Sunday 20th June 1999

From Bath Old Bridge to Cumberland Basin Entrance Lock No 2 arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 35 minutes. 17.5 miles and 8 locks, averaging 4.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 137 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 226 locks, averaging 2.37 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at Bath Marina for diesel (100 litres 28). Saw a kingfisher below Saltford Lock and two more, before and after Keynsham. Paid for the licence (11.90 for 24 hours) at Netham Lock at 14.35. The lock was open both ends. Moored by the Lloyds building again and filled with water (fittings still non-standard). A mostly sunny day with a light wind. Bristol, :  - 20th June 1999.

Monday 21st June 1999

From Bristol, to Saltford Lock No 4 arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 55 minutes. 11.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.21 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 141 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 231 locks, averaging 2.34 lock/miles per hour.

Moored on the wrong side of the lock moorings above the lock and went to the Jolly Sailor for lunch (Gammon Steak 6.50, Plaice 4.95).

From Saltford Lock No 4 to Bath Old Bridge arriving at 3:35 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 6 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.7 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 143 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 234 locks, averaging 2.33 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped on the visitor moorings between Sainsbury's and the station. Collected the post and bought a new tube for the vacuum cleaner. Beryl went shopping at Waitrose. A mostly sunny day.

Started off up the Bath locks alone but stopped to wait for the Wessex hire boat - Countess - after the deep lock. Went up the next two with them then stopped for water (35 minutes) and did the last two by ourselves again. Moored for lunch on the visitor moorings.

From Bathampton Bridge to Avoncliffe Aqueduct arriving at 3:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 6 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 148 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 240 locks, averaging 2.29 lock/miles per hour.

A lot of boats on the move this afternoon. Moored just past the aqueduct and went to the Canal Bookshop. Bought four books. A mostly sunny day.

Wednesday 23rd June 1999

From Avoncliffe Aqueduct to Bradford-on-Avon Lock No 14 arriving at 10:05 am. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 1.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.38 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 149 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 240 locks, averaging 2.28 lock/miles per hour.

Came up through the lock with The Witch. Moored above the lock and went shopping at Budgen's before lunch.

From Bradford-on-Avon Lock No 14 to Semington Bottom Lock No 15 arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 5 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 151 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 241 locks, averaging 2.25 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at Bradford on Avon Marina for 15 minutes to get a pumpout (8). Moored below the locks. A mostly cloudy day with some sunny intervals and a shower before we set off in the morning.

Thursday 24th June 1999

From Semington Bottom Lock No 15 to Devizes Bottom Lock No 22 arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 5 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 154 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 248 locks, averaging 2.25 lock/miles per hour.

Came up all the locks and through the swing bridges with Moorglade a narrowboat based at Foxhangers but with Forest of Dean on the side. Stopped for water then crossed to the other side of the canal at 12.55 to moor for lunch etc. A hot and mostly sunny day.

Friday 25th June 1999

From Devizes Bottom Lock No 22 to Devizes Top Lock No 50 arriving at 2:45 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 35 minutes. 2 miles and 28 locks, averaging 5.37 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 160 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 276 locks, averaging 2.35 lock/miles per hour.

Sorrel, Hailey Wood and Dragonsbane went through on the first locking and we went into the second locking with Cherry Hill. We worked non stop to the top and moored opposite the wharf. Had lunch at a little restaurant in the town (ploughman's 4.25 each). A hot sunny day.

Saturday 26th June 1999

From Devizes Top Lock No 50 to Honey Street Wharf arriving at 3:30 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 8 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.09 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 163 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 277 locks, averaging 2.31 lock/miles per hour.

Spent the morning in Devizes, I took photographs of the flight and Beryl went shopping, before setting off after lunch. Saw a kingfisher on the way down. Moored just past the Barge, needed the gang plank. Had a good dinner at the Barge (Chicken Tika 6.50, Ham and eggs 5, sweets 2.50 each). A Hot day sunny this morning but gradually clouding over this afternoon.

Sunday 27th June 1999

From Honey Street Wharf to Pewsey Wharf arriving at 11:55 am. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 4 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.53 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 164 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 277 locks, averaging 2.29 lock/miles per hour.

It started to rain shortly after we set off and continued all morning. Stopped for water at Pewsey Wharf for half an hour then moved down a little way to the visitor mooring for lunch.

From Pewsey Wharf to Crofton Top Lock No 55 arriving at 5:17 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 45 minutes. 6.25 miles and 4 locks, averaging 2.73 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 168 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 281 locks, averaging 2.26 lock/miles per hour.

Saw Shelley Anne as we went down towards Wotton Rivers. Went through the first lock just behind Dabchick, a White Horse hire boat from Devizes, and the remaining three locks with them - a man and woman in their sixties on their first canal holiday. Moored just before Wolfhall Bridge, needing the gang plank again. The wet morning gave way to a dry afternoon and sunny evening.

From Crofton Top Lock No 55 to Crofton Bottom Lock No 63 arriving at 11:35 am. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 1.5 miles and 8 locks, averaging 6 lock/miles per hour. Came down the locks to moor at the pumping station, just after lock 60. Walked into Wilton and had lunch at the Swan (Cod 7, Gammon steak 7).

From Great Bedwyn Church Lock No 64 to Hungerford Lock No 74 arriving at 5:40 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 20 minutes. 5.25 miles and 10 locks, averaging 3.52 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 175 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 300 locks, averaging 2.27 lock/miles per hour.

Set off after lunch. At little Bedwyn Lock we caught up with another boat and the man on it said he would wait for us at the next lock. We came down all the remaining locks with this single handed boater on an unnamed boat. Saw a kingfisher and a watervole above Picketfield Lock. Moored opposite the sanitary station behind Dabchick. Had dinner at the Downgate (Lobster tails 6.95, Cajun chicken 5.95). A wet day.
