Saturday 1th August 1998

From to Dowley Gap Staircase Locks Nos 20 and 21 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 1.62 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.64 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 489 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 710 locks, averaging 1.66 lock/miles per hour.

A lot of anglers lining the banks today. Moored above the locks and went to the Fishermen's for lunch (Fish & Chips 3.50, Gammon & Egg 4.75) very good.

Totals for this voyage are 489 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 710 locks, averaging 1.65 lock/miles per hour.

Moored on the visitor moorings below the 3 rise. Had a walk round the town then up to the top of the 5 rise, where we had nice icecream cornets. A rainy start but most of the day cloudy and dry.

Sunday 2th August 1998

From Bingley Station Bridge No 202 to Leache Bridge No 196 arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 3.25 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 492 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 718 locks, averaging 1.66 lock/miles per hour.

Went up the three and five with another, un-named, boat and stopped for water and ice-cream at the top. Barry volunteered to take my old engine oil, which he uses to help burn rubbish. Beryl gave Barry a can of beer. Went throughthe swing bridges and moored by the woods before swing bridge No 195 for lunch etc. A sunny day with a few clouds.

Monday 3th August 1998

From Leache Bridge No 196 to Silsden Bridge No 191A arriving at 3:35 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 4 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.69 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 493 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 718 locks, averaging 1.66 lock/miles per hour.

A rainy morning so I finished my article for Waterways World before lunch. Set off after lunch and stopped at Silsden Boats for pumpout (8.50) and gas (11.50) and while Beryl went shopping (45 minutes) then went across the canal to moor. Had dinner at the King's Arms (Yorkshire Pudding and Sausage 3.95). A wet and windy day.

Tuesday 4th August 1998

From Silsden Bridge No 191A to Skipton Junction arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 6.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.45 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 496 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 718 locks, averaging 1.65 lock/miles per hour.

Filled with water (15 minutes) then moored just past the junction. After lunch we walked down the Springs Branch then went to Skipton Castle and looked in the church. Thursday 6th August 1998

From Skipton Junction to Higherland Lock No 32 arriving at 4:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.31 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 498 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 721 locks, averaging 1.65 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping at Tesco's before lunch. Came up through the 2 swing bridges and the first lock with Athesis (Stockton on Tees). Stopped for water (30 minutes) above the lock then moored. Went to the Anchor Inn for dinner (Bacon & Onion Suet 4.95, Chicken Korma 5.99, plus 2 desserts 4.45). A dull day with light showers.

Friday 7th August 1998

From Higherland Lock No 32 to Bank Newton Top Lock No 41 arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 1.5 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.23 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 502 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 730 locks, averaging 1.65 lock/miles per hour.

Came up through the locks by ourselves. Stopped for coffee (20 minutes) at the bottom of the Bank Newton locks. Saw a kingfisher. Moored about a mile after the locks for lunch, etc. A dull cloudy day.

Saturday 8th August 1998

From Bank Newton Top Lock No 41 to Salterforth Bridge No 151 arriving at 5:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 7.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.79 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 504 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 733 locks, averaging 1.65 lock/miles per hour.

Set off after lunch. Filled with water (25 minutes) at the top of Greberfield locks. Moored on the jetty past the bridge and had dinner on the boat. Went to the Anchor for a drink afterwards. Another cool cloudy day.

Sunday 9th August 1998

From Salterforth Bridge No 151 to Barrowford Top Lock No 45 arriving at 11:35 am. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 3.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.19 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 506 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 734 locks, averaging 1.65 lock/miles per hour.

Walked into Salterforth village to post a letter before setting off. Only had to wait 5 minutes at Foulridge tunnel before going through (on the hour). Moored on the visitor moorings a little way before the lock. Walked into Barrowford and had lunch at the White Bear (Plaice 4.20, Chicken Tika Masala 4.95, Lemon Brulee 2.45 each). A fine sunny day.

Monday 10th August 1998

From Barrowford Top Lock No 45 to Godley Bridge No 130H arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 7 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.33 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 509 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 740 locks, averaging 1.65 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at Barrowford Top Lock to top up with water (10 minutes) then went down the locks with Cutty Wren, the lock keeper filling all the locks ahead for us. Moored on the embankment for lunch and shopping at Sainsbury's. Forever Cut and Fragil went by while we were moored there.

From Godley Bridge No 130H to Hapton Bridge No 121 arriving at 3:30 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 4.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 510 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 740 locks, averaging 1.64 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped just past the bridge. A mostly cloudy day with some brief intervals of hazy sun.

Tuesday 11th August 1998

From Hapton Bridge No 121 to Enam Bridge No 103A arriving at 1:05 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 55 minutes. 12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.06 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 514 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 740 locks, averaging 1.63 lock/miles per hour.

Moored at the wharf for lunch, which we had at the Wharf Inn (Gammon steak 4.10 each). The 58 foot hotel boats Bittell and Earlswood were there with their dog Fenny. Collected the post and went shopping at Morrison's. A sunny day.

Wednesday 12th August 1998

From Enam Bridge No 103A to Riley Green Bridge No 91A arriving at 11:50 am. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 5.75 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.15 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 517 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 746 locks, averaging 1.63 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the locks in the rain. Other boats were coming up, including Florian of Oundle. Moored for lunch just before the bridge. A cloudy, wet and windy day.

Thursday 13th August 1998

From Riley Green Bridge No 91A to Cowling Bridge No 75A arriving at 1:25 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 6.25 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.98 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 520 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 753 locks, averaging 1.64 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water at a slow tap above Johnson's Hill Locks (45 minutes). Went down the locks with Gordanne. Moored for lunch etc. just past the railway bridge, 74A. A cloudy day with rain in the afternoon.

Friday 14th August 1998

From Cowling Bridge No 75A to Wigan Top Lock No 65 arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 7.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 523 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 754 locks, averaging 1.63 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for pumpout (10) and diesel (27 gallons @ 76p = 20.52) at L&L Cruisers. It took 30 minutes and I was charged 30 as they were short of change. Saw a kingfisher just past Red Rock Bridge. Stopped for lunch and filled with water above the lock. Walked into Wigan and did some shopping at Morrisons. Came back by taxi. A cloudy day with showers.

Saturday 15th August 1998

From Wigan Top Lock No 65 to Wigan Bottom Lock No 87 arriving at 12:05 am. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 2.25 miles and 22 locks, averaging 6.61 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 526 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 776 locks, averaging 1.66 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the 21 with Lady Kate, followed by Forever Cut and Fragil. Moored below the bottom lock for lunch. Went through the last 2 locks with Fleur D'eau. Saw Zavala and Louise at Wigan Pier.

From Wigan Bottom Lock No 87 to Hell Meadow Lock No 89 arriving at 2:40 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 1.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.81 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 528 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 778 locks, averaging 1.66 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the two locks by ourselves and moored just before Crooke Bridge. A mostly sunny day with a few spots of rain.

Sunday 16th August 1998

From Hell Meadow Lock No 89 to Appley Bridge No 42 arriving at 1:05 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 15 minutes. 3.5 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.6 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 529 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 779 locks, averaging 1.66 lock/miles per hour.

Filled with water at Dean Lock (30 minutes) where we also met Sadie Dean on Straw Bear. Moored just past the bridge. Had lunch at the Water Side (Roast Pork 3.95 each). A sunny morning but more cloud in the afternoon.

Monday 17th August 1998

From Appley Bridge No 42 to Burscough Bridge No 32A arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 5.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 531 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 780 locks, averaging 1.65 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped a little way past the bridge for lunch and went shopping at the Day & Nite supermarket.

From Burscough Bridge No 32A to New Lane Bridge No 31 arriving at 2:45 pm. The time taken was 25 minutes. 1 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 532 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 780 locks, averaging 1.65 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just before the bridge. Had dinner on the boat and went to the Farmer's Arms for drinks. A day of sunshine and cloud.

Tuesday 18th August 1998

From New Lane Bridge No 31 to Halsall Bridge No 25 arriving at 1:25 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 4.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.43 lock/miles per hour. Went through the first swing bridge with Sigara. Stopped for water at Scarisbrick Bridge. Moored just after the bridge and had lunch (3 courses for 6.95) at the Saracen's Head. A mostly sunny day.

From Halsall Bridge No 25 to Lollies Bridge No 17A arriving at 11:15 am. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 4.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.76 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 535 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 780 locks, averaging 1.64 lock/miles per hour.

Moored on the Mersey Motor Cruising Club (MMCC) moorings just past Dicconson's Bridge, No 17. A mostly sunny day.

Thursday 20th August 1998

From Lollies Bridge No 17A to Stanley Dock Cut arriving at 10:05 am. The time taken was 4 hours 15 minutes. 13.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.2 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 539 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 780 locks, averaging 1.63 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the last part of the canal in convoy and went into Eldonian Village but there was not enough room to turn. Backed out and carried on down the locks.

From Stanley Dock Cut to Stanley Dock Cut arriving at 11:45 am. The time taken was 1 hour 40 minutes. 0.5 miles and 4 locks, averaging 2.7 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 541 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 784 locks, averaging 1.63 lock/miles per hour.

Came down into Stanley Dock through the 4 locks. Moored beside Marryan. The strong cross wind sent the large "working boat" - Prince - crashing into our side and shifted some of the internal bulkheads. A cloudy morning with showers, strong winds and some sunshine in the afternoon.

Sunday 23rd August 1998

From Stanley Dock Cut to Ellesmere Port Docks, Locks Nos 44 to 46 arriving at 10:25 am. The time taken was 6 hours 25 minutes. 14 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.49 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 547 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 786 locks, averaging 1.62 lock/miles per hour.

Started off from Nelson Dock at 4am and went down through the docks in the dark. Came out of Glascote Lock, onto the Mersey at 5.30. A smooth crossing with cloud and occasional rain. Had to wait around outside Eastham Lock until it was ready for us at 9am. Came out onto the Manchester Ship Canal at 9.45 and moored below the bottom lock at Ellesmere Port. Monday 24th August 1998

From Liverpool, Salisbury Dock to Weaver Mouth arriving at 83:0 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 7 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.23 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 550 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 786 locks, averaging 1.61 lock/miles per hour.

Went down to Weston Marsh Lock breasted up with Aquila, from Aylesbury Boat Club, crewed by Ken and Lindsey. The lock was already full with boats so we moored to wait. After over an hour it was decided that the top gates could not be opened and we would have to go to Weston Point.

From Weaver Mouth to Weston Point Docks arriving at 11:50 am. The time taken was 45 minutes. 1.12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.49 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 550 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 786 locks, averaging 1.61 lock/miles per hour.

Moored in the huge dock/lock to wait for the rest of the convoy of 84 boats to arrive. Had lunch and took some pictures. When the last boat arrived the entance gates were closed and we waited for the level of the dock to rise, about 18 inches, before the exit gates could be opened. Two swing bridges then had to be opened so we could proceed up the Weaver.

From Weston Point Docks to Acton Bridge arriving at 6:35 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 9 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 554 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 787 locks, averaging 1.6 lock/miles per hour.

Came en mass up the river. Had to wait for Dutton Lock then went on to moor just before Acton Bridge. Went to the Leigh Arms for dinner (Gammon Steak 5.25, Plaice 4.95). A wet start but amostly sunny day.

Tuesday 25th August 1998

From Acton Bridge to Vale Royal Locks No 1 arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 7.87 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 557 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 789 locks, averaging 1.59 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water at Acton Bridge before setting off. When we got to the lock we found that only the small lock was in operation and that there was a queue of boats. After a short wait we decided to turn back without stopping.

From Vale Royal Locks No 1 to Northwich Bridge arriving at 2:25 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 2.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.05 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 559 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 790 locks, averaging 1.59 lock/miles per hour.

Had lunch on the move and came back to moor at Northwich Marina, ready for the BW barbecue tonight. Went shopping at Sainsbury's. Went to BW barbecue in the evening. A cloudy day with rain in the afternoon.

Wednesday 26th August 1998

From Northwich Bridge to Acton Bridge arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 1 hour 40 minutes. 5.62 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.97 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 560 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 791 locks, averaging 1.59 lock/miles per hour.

A late start (10.50) due to all the boats in Northwich Marina blocking us in. Moored just past the bridge for pumpout (8.50) and a few yards on for lunch.

From Acton Bridge to Weston Point Docks arriving at 5:05 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 8.87 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.2 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 563 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 792 locks, averaging 1.58 lock/miles per hour.

Came down to moor in the dock. Jemma and Tanbees moored beside us. A cloudy start to the day but sun in the afternoon.

Came up the Ship Canal with Pleasure Bent. Slow going through locks and a wild race in between. Had lunch and dinner (bacon butties) on the move. Moored outside Welland Lock and went to the Boaters quiz. A sunny day.
