Friday 1th May 1998

From to Marlow Lock arriving at 12:05 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 7.25 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.08 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 139 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 246 locks, averaging 2.48 lock/miles per hour.

Spoke to the man from the nb Walter Samson that moored behind us last night. They are going to the K&A. River still running fairly fast, a bit of a push under Maidenhead Bridge and yellow boards at Boulter's and Cookham Lock (where we stopped for 5 minutes to top up the water). At Marlow Lock the red board was out. We Moored by the park for Lunch etc. A cold cloudy day so we did not go on in the afternoon.

Saturday 2th May 1998

From Marlow Lock to Temple Island arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 6.87 miles and 4 locks, averaging 5.02 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 141 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 250 locks, averaging 2.47 lock/miles per hour.

Found the back alternator belt needed renewing so spent 2 hours taking off and reassembling all the belts and other bits and pieces. Stopped for lunch on the post moorings a little way above the lock.

From Temple Island to Sonning Lock arriving at 5:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 7.87 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.29 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 144 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 252 locks, averaging 2.43 lock/miles per hour.

Came up through the locks with cruisers. Water running quiet fast across the approach to Sonning Bridge, which made it a bit tricky. Moored above the lock. A dull start to the day soon gave way to sunshine. A cool breeze at times.

Sunday 3th May 1998

From Sonning Lock to Whitchurch Lock arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 9.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 148 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 255 locks, averaging 2.39 lock/miles per hour.

Saw Carrie Ann and Lady Rose (who we moor with at Bell Weir) at Tesco's, Reading. Stopped for lunch at Child Beal.

From Whitchurch Lock to Wallingford Bridge arriving at 5:00 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 10 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.73 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 151 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 258 locks, averaging 2.37 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water at Cleeve Lock (15minutes). Moored just above the bridge. Mostly cold and cloudy but sunny in the late afternoon and evening.

Monday 4th May 1998

From Wallingford Bridge to Abingdon Bridge arriving at 1:20 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 40 minutes. 13 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.64 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 155 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 262 locks, averaging 2.33 lock/miles per hour.

Came up through the locks with various cruisers again. Moored just above the bridge on the town side. Went to lunch at the Crown & Thistle (Minted Lamb 9.95, Haddock 5.65 and Profiter Roll Sundae 2.75 each) very good. A sunny morning but cloudy in the afternoon.

Tuesday 5th May 1998

From Abingdon Bridge to Osney Bridge arriving at 12:10 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 9.37 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.46 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 158 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 266 locks, averaging 2.31 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water above Abingdon Lock then went on to moor just below the bridge. Saw a kingfisher above Sandford Lock. Had lunch at the Pizza Hut then did some shopping in M&S. A mostly cloudy and cool day.

Wednesday 6th May 1998

From Osney Bridge to Bablock Hythe Ferry arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 9.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.23 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 161 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 270 locks, averaging 2.29 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for a pumpout (5) at Eynsham Lock but got swept in to the bank by the weir stream and knocked a lump out of the Cratch. Saw a pair of Canada Geese with their yellow goselings. Moored for lunch on the visitor moorings above the ferry.

From Bablock Hythe Ferry to Tadpole Bridge arriving at 4:40 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 9.87 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.96 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 164 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 272 locks, averaging 2.26 lock/miles per hour.

Moored at the Trout Inn and had dinner there (Duck and Sea Trout 20.05 including drinks. Saw two kingfishers today. A cloudy, windy day with a couple of showers.

Thursday 7th May 1998

From Tadpole Bridge to Ha'penny Bridge, Lechlade arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 10.25 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.26 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 168 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 277 locks, averaging 2.24 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at Radcot Lock for water (20 minutes) then pushed on up to Lechlade for lunch and some milk.

From Ha'penny Bridge, Lechlade to Newbridge arriving at 6:25 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 15 minutes. 16.37 miles and 6 locks, averaging 5.26 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 172 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 283 locks, averaging 2.22 lock/miles per hour.

Made good progress down the river. Saw several kingfishers and a lapwing today. Moored outside the Rose Revived and had drinks there after dinner. A cloudy bright day.

Friday 8th May 1998

From Newbridge to Osney Bridge arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 13.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.63 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 176 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 288 locks, averaging 2.2 lock/miles per hour.

Saw Wayfarer (the narrowboat from Bristol that had trouble in the wind at St John's Lock yesterday) moored just below Newbridge. Saw a pair of kingfishers. Turned above the lock and got stuck across the lock cut. The lock keeper helped us off and we moored on the visitor moorings. Had lunch and went into town to collect the post and do the shopping at Sainsbury's. A warm sunny day.

Sunday 10th May 1998

From Osney Bridge to Thrupp Bend arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 15 minutes. 6.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 2.73 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 181 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 293 locks, averaging 2.17 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the Thames and through to Dukes Lock behind Taurus and Snipe, quite a few waits at locks. Stopped for lunch on the visitor moorings.

From Thrupp Bend to Pigeon's Lock No 39 arriving at 6:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 3.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 1.86 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 184 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 295 locks, averaging 2.15 lock/miles per hour.

Filled with water at Thrupp (35 minutes). Caught up with Taurus and Snipe again at the lock. Moored just beyond the winding hole, by the river, a mooring recommended to us by the people on Dylan Thomas from Lower Heyford. A mostly cloudy bright day.

Monday 11th May 1998

From Pigeon's Lock No 39 to Allen's Lock No 36 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 5.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 186 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 298 locks, averaging 2.13 lock/miles per hour.

Talked to the people on Heming Way about moorings on the Nene. They are moving to a place between Bedford and St Neots. Moored above the lock and walked up to the Barley Mow intending to have lunch there, but they had no food so we came back and had lunch on the boat.

From Allen's Lock No 36 to Aynho Bridge No 190 arriving at 3:35 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 0 minutes. 4.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 188 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 301 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for deisel (122.73 litres, 27) and gas (10) also got a piece of ply to mend the cratch and dumped the old engine oil.Moved across the cut to moor for the night. A wet cloudy start gave way to a fine day with sunshine.

Tuesday 12th May 1998

From Banbury Lock No 29 to Cropredy Lock No 25 arriving at 5:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 4.5 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.29 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 194 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 309 locks, averaging 2.1 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water below the lock then came up above the lock to moor. A mostly cloudy day but some sunshine in the afternoon.

Wednesday 13th May 1998

From Cropredy Lock No 25 to Fenny Compton Wharf arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 6.25 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.69 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 197 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 318 locks, averaging 2.11 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the 8 locks to the summit passing a lot of boats on the way down, including Conwy and Caernarfan, so we only had to empty one lock. Stopped at the marina for some Elsan Blue (4l 9.45) and waterways World. Moored for lunch, which we had on the boat, and had a pint each at the Wharf.

From Fenny Compton Wharf to Napton Top Lock No 16 arriving at 6:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 7.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.43 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 200 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 318 locks, averaging 2.08 lock/miles per hour.

A pleasant trip up to the locks. A warm sunny day.

Thursday 14th May 1998

From Napton Top Lock No 16 to Coventry Road Bridge No 109 arriving at 12:00 am. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 3.5 miles and 9 locks, averaging 5.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 203 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 327 locks, averaging 2.1 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the locks and stopped for water (30 minutes) at the bottom. Went on and moored by the Napton Bridge Inn where we had a very good 3 course lunch (soup, roast turkey and spotted dick 3.95 each).

From Coventry Road Bridge No 109 to Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 arriving at 3:55 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 6.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.11 lock/miles per hour. Stopped at Midland Chandlers (35 minutes) to get some new fire extinguishers, shower pump, battery isolation switch and 50 foot ropes. Moved on to moorings by the marina. Saw Pamandy and spoke to Pam and Andy. A dull day with rain in the afternoon.

Friday 15th May 1998

From Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 to Brownsover Arm (disused) arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 10.62 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 209 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 332 locks, averaging 2.06 lock/miles per hour.

After having the BSS inspection done (4 points to put right) we turned round to go up the Oxford Canal. Stopped briefly at Midland Chandlers but the queue was too long. Moored at Tesco's and went shopping.

From Brownsover Arm (disused) to Clifton Wharf arriving at 6:10 pm. The time taken was 50 minutes. 1.12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.34 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 210 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 332 locks, averaging 2.05 lock/miles per hour.

Turned round and headed back towards Braunston. Moored by the golf course. A hot sunny day.

Saturday 16th May 1998

From Clifton Wharf to Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 9.5 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.68 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 214 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 336 locks, averaging 2.04 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water (20 minutes) at the bottom of Hillmorton Locks. Passed a lot of boats on our way down to Braunston, including Chris Coburn on Progress. Stopped for pump out (5) at Braunston Marina then moored for lunch. After lunch (1345) we moved down to Braunston Boats where Justin Green made some holes in the gas locker for us (15). A hot sunny day.

Sunday 17th May 1998

From Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 to Braunston Top Lock No 6 arriving at 83:5 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 15 minutes. 0.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.4 lock/miles per hour. Came up the locks and moored at the top. Walked down towards where Pendlewytch was moored and met Priscila and Sue coming up the towpath. Went with them and Martin to the Mill House for drinks and lunch. A sunny day.

Monday 18th May 1998

From Braunston Top Lock No 6 to Watford Locks Nos 3 to 7 arriving at 12:10 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 5.62 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.59 lock/miles per hour. Stopped for water at Watford bottom lock (25 minutes) then went up through the locks and moored between bridges 7 and 8 for lunch etc. Walked into the village across the fields to post my film. A hot sunny day.

Tuesday 19th May 1998

From Watford Locks Nos 3 to 7 to Crick Wharf Bridge No 12 arriving at 10:35 am. The time taken was 50 minutes. 2.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 218 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 348 locks, averaging 2.05 lock/miles per hour.

Put covers on battery terminals and did some tidying up of the cables before setting off. Moored on the visitor moorings just before the bridge and went shopping at the Co-op. Looked round the church then went to the Red Lion for lunch (Chicken & mushroom pie 3.90 each) very good.

From Crick Wharf Bridge No 12 to Husband Bosworth Tunnel (North-east End) arriving at 5:50 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 55 minutes. 12.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.62 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 223 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 348 locks, averaging 2 lock/miles per hour.

Moored a little way on from the tunnel. A hot sunny day.

Wednesday 20th May 1998

From Husband Bosworth Tunnel (North-east End) to Foxton Junction arriving at 12:10 am. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 5.37 miles and 10 locks, averaging 4.98 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 226 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 358 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water at the top of the locks (25 minutes). They are doing a lot of work on the lockside including renewing the quadrants. Stopped for lunch a little way after the junction.

From Foxton Junction to Newton Middle ( or Spinney) Lock No 24 arriving at 5:05 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 55 minutes. 7.87 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.8 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 230 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 365 locks, averaging 2.01 lock/miles per hour.

Passed a pair of un-converted working boats in the tunnel. On the advice of the lock keeper we moored below the lock. A hot sunny day but clouding over later in the day.

Thursday 21st May 1998

From Newton Middle ( or Spinney) Lock No 24 to Bush Lock No 33 arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 3.87 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.86 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 234 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 374 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just before the lock for lunch and afterwards walked back to Crow Mill Bridge and into Wigston for shopping at the Co-op. Water a bit low in some of the pounds.

From Bush Lock No 33 to Gee's Lock No 36 arriving at 4:30 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 25 minutes. 2.12 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 235 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 377 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just before the lock, on the end of the lock mooring. A cloudy start to the day but some sun later on.

Friday 22nd May 1998

From Gee's Lock No 36 to Birstall Lock No 45 arriving at 3:25 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 45 minutes. 8.12 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.6 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 240 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 386 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Got delayed at Kings Lock (30 minutes) because of the mud boats from the dredging using the locks. There was a lot of rubbish floating in the pound below Limekiln Lock. The converted Woolwich "Aston" was strugling due to a fouled prop so we gave them a tow to the next lock. We arrived and moored before the lock at 13.55 and went to the White Horse for lunch etc. (Cajan Chicken and Fishermans Bake 6.25 each). After lunch (15.05) we moved up to the moorings above the lock. A cloudy dat with some sunshine in the afternoon.

Saturday 23rd May 1998

From Birstall Lock No 45 to Mountsorrel Lock No 50 arriving at 11:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 6.25 miles and 5 locks, averaging 5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 242 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 391 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Went through Thurmaston Lock with nb Moon but they were waiting for friends on another boat. Stopped for lunch just before the lock.

From Mountsorrel Lock No 50 to Barrow Deep Lock No 51 arriving at 3:25 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 10 minutes. 2 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 243 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 392 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water opposite the Navigation Inn (30 minutes) then went on to moor below the lock. Had a walk round the village and did some shopping in Somerfield. A mostly cloudy day.

Sunday 24th May 1998

From Barrow Deep Lock No 51 to Bishops Meadow Lock No 54 arriving at 12:10 am. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 4.62 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.86 lock/miles per hour. A lot of boats on the move today. Stopped for lunch a little way after the lock.

Shared all the locks and boats coming from the opposite direction in every case. Went past the Soar Boating Club Rally at Normanton on Soar. Moored on the lock moorings (flood lock open). A cloudy start but a mainly sunny afternoon.

From Kegworth Flood Lock No 57 to Beeston Lock No 4 arriving at 12:05 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 7.5 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 251 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 402 locks, averaging 2 lock/miles per hour.

A lot of boats on the move on the River Soar and when we gor on to the Trent we found boats from the Lichfield Cruising Club at the lock in front of us. I was told that 12 of their boats are going down to Holme. Stopped after the lock for lunch.

Moored just below the lock and went into town to collect the post and to buy 2 new pillows and a few other things. Had lunch on the boat.

Stopped at Medow Lane lock for water (30 minutes) then went on through Holme Lock (which was boater operated today) and moored just above Stoke Lock. A cool cloudy day with a little rain.

Stopped at Farndon Marina for 15 minutes to get some diesel (121.59 litres @ 22p = 26.75). All the moorings full below the lock so we went on through the bridge and moored on the right for lunch. Went shopping (Morrison's). A cloudy day with sunny periods.

Thursday 28th May 1998

From Newark Road Bridge to Torksey Lock arriving at 3:00 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 0 minutes. 21.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.95 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 264 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 412 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Waited for 10 miutes at Newark Nether Lock for a cruiser to join us then went on down to Cromwell where we filled with water and checked with the lock keeper about going down the Trent (40 minutes). She said we could go straight away (11.10). Arrived at Torksey and had a pump out (6 - 20 minutes) before moving on to moor on the visitor moorings. A mostly cloudy day with some rain after we moored.

Friday 29th May 1998

From Torksey Lock to Washingborough arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 13.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.85 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 267 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 413 locks, averaging 1.92 lock/miles per hour.

Saturday 30th May 1998

From Washingborough to Tattershall Bridge arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 4 hours 10 minutes. 17.37 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.41 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 271 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 414 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

Passed a couple of narrowboats on the move. Saw an Oyster Catcher and Great Creasted Grebes with young. Moored on the pontoons below the bridge for lunch.

From Tattershall Bridge to Boston Grand Sluice Lock No 3 arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 11.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 5.28 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 274 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 415 locks, averaging 1.88 lock/miles per hour.

Moored on the visitor moorings (the pontoon had been removed) and went to Kwik Save for some shopping. A mostly cloudy day with a little sunshine in the afternoon.
