Cumberland Canal Project

Description of Cumberland Canal Project: A proposed canal from the Solway Firth about a mile east of Bowness to Carlisle with a navigable feeder to Wigton. The main line for coasting vessels was to have locks 20 feet wide with 8 foot depth over the sills and was estimated to cost 109,393. The navigable feeder which wasprobably intended for narrowboats was estimated at 38,139.

History of Cumberland Canal Project: Proposed by Telford in 1808 but was soon superseded by other plans for the Carlisle Canal.
