Cromford Canal

Description of Cromford Canal: A 14 mile 5 furlong canal that ran from the Erewash Canal at Langley Mill to Cromford with a branch to Pixton.

History of Cromford Canal: Authorised by an Act of 1789, opened in 1794. Butterley Tunnel was closed due to subsidence in 1900. The tunnel was 3,063 yards long but with the addition of a road extension it is now closer to 3,100 yards. The whole of the rest of the canal, except for half a mile, was abandoned in 1944 and the final stretch to Langley Mill in 1962.
