XXVI

THE CALEDONIAN CANAL.

OUR next programme was to explore the Caledonian Canal, through Inverness-shire, a far cry from the Clyde, so we railed our boat to Fort William, the party travelling by steamer via Dunoon by the well-known West Coast Steamer "Columba" to Ardrishaig in Argyllshire.

Thereafter we transferred to another little steamer, the "Linnet," and so navigated the Crinan Canal, some nine miles long through lovely Highland scenery. We again changed to another steamer, when we sailed right up the West Coast of Scotland to Fort William, a delightful cruise.

Here we found our boat awaiting us, and we now began our Caledonian Canal cruise, starting from Corpach.

The Caledonian Canal has been so often described that we do not enter into details further than to say we traversed the whole distance of 60 miles from Corpach to Inverness. It was a great experience, and possibly. rather a foolhardy one considering the somewhat dangerous navigation on these large lochs with the type of boat we used. However, we safely accomplished the journey. The only drawback on this tour was the unsettled weather: in these lochs one gets many startling "samples" of the Highland climate.

The grand and varied scenery along the route was, it is needless to say, highly appreciated, and now we finish what was a continuous tour of nearly three weeks' duration, the total distance covered on the actual waterway journeys being 260 miles, viz. : -
