Dorset & Somerset Canal

Description: Work was started, but never finished, on an 8-mile branch of this canal, which was authorised to run from Blandford to the Kennet & Avon at Widbrooke near Bradford on Avon.

History: Authorised by an Act of 1796 but never opened.

Doctor's Canal

Description: A one mile level canal that ran from the Glamorganshire Canal at Denia to Treforest.

History: Dr Richard Griffiths built this canal to serve coal mines on his land. It was opened in 1813 and was derelict by 1918.

Duke's Cut

Description: A short backwater and cut linking the Oxford Canal with the Thames

History: Built by the Duke of Marlborough and when opened in 1789 formed the first link between the Thames and the Oxford Canal. The alternative link at Isis Lock was opened in 1796.

Douglas Navigation

Description: Was a 17½ mile river navigation with 13 locks from the Ribble up to Wigan.

History: Authorised by an Act of 1720 but not opened until around 1742. All of the traffic was lost to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal by 1801.

Donnington Wood Canal

Description: A 5½ mile tub boat canal on Lord Gower's land from Donnington Wood to the turnpike road.

History: Probably completed about 1768 and abandoned in 1904.

Driffield Navigation

Description: Runs 7 miles from Driffield to the junction with the River Hull. Much of the waterway is unnavigable due to derelict locks and lowered bridges.

History: Authorised by an Act of 1767 and completed in 1770. Improvements were authorised by an Act of 1801 and completed in 1805.

Droitwich Junction Canal

Description: A narrow canal linking the 1½ miles between the Droitwich Canal and the Worcester and Birmingham Canal.

History: Authorised by an Act of 1852 and opened in 1853. Currently closed but there are plans to restore the waterway.

Droitwich Canal

Description: This broad beam canal, sometimes called the Droitwich Barge Canal, runs five and three-quarter miles, from Droitwich junction to the River Severn.

History: Authorised by an Act of 1768. Originally opened in 1771 and abandoned in 1939. Since 1973 the Droitwich Canal Trust Ltd. have been trying to restore the canal which they now own.

Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal

Description: A 13½ mile, 11 lock, wide canal from the Forth & Clyde Canal at Falkirk to Edinburgh.

History: Authorised by an Act of 1817 and opened in 1822. Abandoned 1965. Re-opened by the Queen on the 24th May 2002, as part of the £78 million Millennium Link project to restore the Forth & Clyde and the Edinburgh & Glasgow Union canals.

Earl of Ashburnham's Canal

Description: A 1.5-mile canal built near Pembrey, beginning at a coal level at Ffrwd and a short branch to Coed. It served other collieries and was connected to tramways.

History: The canal was being built, or perhaps extended, in 1796.
