2006 Voyage - July

Friday 21st July 2006

From Peterborough Junction to Wansford Bridge arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 5 minutes. 11.50 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.55 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 4 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 11.50 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.55 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.
A hot day to start our long delayed voyage. Dropped the rubbish at the embankment before making our way up river. Stopped just before the bridge and went to the Paper Mills for lunch (crab salad). After lunch we walked round the village and went into the little church - one of the few cool places on this hot day.

Saturday 22nd July 2006

From Wansford Bridge to Warmington Lock No 31 arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 6.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.92 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 7 hours 15 minutes total cruising time, 17.75 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.28 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

A cloudy morning as we went up river but the sun came out later and it was very hot by the time we reached Fotheringhay. Went to the Falcon for lunch (Pork chops - very good) then had a look in the church.

From Warmington Lock No 31 to Lower Barnwell Lock No 27 arriving at 5:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 8.38 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.24 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 10 hours 10 minutes total cruising time, 26.13 miles and 10 locks, averaging 3.55 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

It started to rain after Perio Lock and was raining hard, with thunder and lightning by the time we reached Cotterstock lock. We lowered the guillotine and stayed in the lock chamber for 40 minutes while I changed my wet clothes and waited for the rain to ease up. We were hoping to stop above Ashton Lock but the moorings were full se we came on to more at Barnwell Mill. The restraunt here has closed and we are told that the mill has been sold to a hotel chain.

Sunday 23rd July 2006

From Lower Barnwell Lock No 27 to Titchmarsh Lock No 23 arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 6.38 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.28 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 13 hours 20 minutes total cruising time, 32.50 miles and 14 locks, averaging 3.49 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

A cloudy morning with a few spots of rain as we came up to Thrapston. A lot of water was coming over the gats at Wadnhoe and Titchmarsh locks. The farm bridge above Titchmarsh was missing and there is still work in progress on its replacement. We moored at the Middle Nene Sailing Club on the last couple of yards of mooring with most of the boat in the reeds and undergrowth. Went to the Woolpack for lunch (Roast Beef - another good meal) then bought a couple of items at the Co-op. A warm and sunny afternoon.

Monday 24th July 2006

From Titchmarsh Lock No 23 to Irthlingborough Bridge arriving at 1:30 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 45 minutes. 10.50 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 17 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 43.00 miles and 21 locks, averaging 3.75 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came up through six locks to moor at the Diamond Centre. Irthlingborough lock is now electric. Filled with water before we moored. A hot sunny day.

Tuesday 25th July 2006

From Irthlingborough Bridge to Barton Lock No 10 arriving at 2:50 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 30 minutes. 9.00 miles and 6 locks, averaging 2.73 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 22 hours 35 minutes total cruising time, 52.00 miles and 27 locks, averaging 3.50 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came through Higham lock with the cruisers Shropshire Lass and Keba then through Ditchford and all the other locks with Greyfisher - a 62 foot narrowboat from the Kennet & Avon. A hot day. We had lunch on the move and stopped by the gravel quarry before White Mills Lock.

Wednesday 26th July 2006

From Barton Lock No 10 to Cogenhoe Lock No 7 arriving at 11:30 am. The time taken was 1 hours 40 minutes. 2.88 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.53 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 24 hours 15 minutes total cruising time, 54.88 miles and 30 locks, averaging 3.50 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came up to moor above Cogenhoe Lock. A lot of boats were moored here including Charlie Fox on Bill Badger. Walked up to the village before lunch and again in the evening to have dinner at the pub. Another hot day but with some cloud in the evening.

Thursday 27th July 2006

From Cogenhoe Lock No 7 to Weston Favell Lock No 4 arriving at 11:15 am. The time taken was 1 hours 40 minutes. 2.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.45 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 25 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 57.63 miles and 33 locks, averaging 3.50 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

I went up to the village to buy a few items before we set off. Came through the locks with a Springer narrowboat called Avion. We moored on the Washes mooring above the lock. A warm and somewhat cloudy day with some thundery showers in theafternoon.

Friday 28th July 2006

From Weston Favell Lock No 4 to South Bridge, Northampton arriving at 9:00 am. The time taken was 1 hours 25 minutes. 3.38 miles and 4 locks, averaging 5.21 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 27 hours 20 minutes total cruising time, 61.00 miles and 37 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Set off at 7.35 to get th Northampton early. Followed the narrowboat Dick Terrapin through the first two locks and shared the last lock with them. Did shopping at Morrison's.

From South Bridge, Northampton to Rothersthorpe Bottom Lock No 13 arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 3.25 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.48 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 29 hours 25 minutes total cruising time, 64.25 miles and 41 locks, averaging 3.58 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came up the arm and moored on the aqueduct before the lock. A cloudy start to the day soon gave way to hot sunshine.

Saturday 29th July 2006

From Rothersthorpe Bottom Lock No 13 to Gayton Junction arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 1.63 miles and 13 locks, averaging 5.66 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 32 hours total cruising time, 65.88 miles and 54 locks, averaging 3.75 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Beryl drove the boat and I worked the locks on the bike. Stopped for water for 35 minutes at the junction.

Grand Union Northampton Branch to Grand Union Main Line

From Gayton Junction to Blisworth Tunnel South End arriving at 1:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hours. 3.38 miles and No locks, averaging 3.38 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 33 hours total cruising time, 69.25 miles and 54 locks, averaging 3.73 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored a little way after the tunnel and had lunch. In the evening we went to the Boat for dinner (fillet steak £12.95, Chicken Chasseur £7.25) very good. A hot sunny day.

Sunday 30th July 2006

From Blisworth Tunnel South End to Yardley Bridge No 60 arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 1 hours 30 minutes. 4.13 miles and 7 locks, averaging 7.42 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 34 hours 30 minutes total cruising time, 73.38 miles and 61 locks, averaging 3.89 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came down the Stoke Bruene flight with a hire boat from Hillmorton. Stopped for 20 minutes at Kingfisher Marina for a pumpout (£15) and diesel (125.7 litres @ 50p = £62.85).Then we went on to moor by bridge 61 and walked into the village to have Sunday Lunch at the Coffee Pot pub.

From Yardley Bridge No 60 to Solomon's (or Cosgrove Ornamental) Bridge No 65 arriving at 4:05 pm. The time taken was 50 minutes. 2.63 miles and No locks, averaging 3.15 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 35 hours 20 minutes total cruising time, 76.00 miles and 61 locks, averaging 3.88 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

After lunch we came down to the visitor moorig just past the bridge. A mostly sunny day with some cloudy intervals.

Monday 31st July 2006

From Solomon's (or Cosgrove Ornamental) Bridge No 65 to Willen Bridge No 81 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 7.13 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.15 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 37 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 83.13 miles and 62 locks, averaging 3.83 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped 30 minutes for water near bridge 78 and Beryl went to the shop. Came on to moor just past bridge 82. After lunch we went for a walk up to Willen Lake. A morning of sunshine and cloud increasing in the afternoon with some rain.
