2000 Cruise - October

Sunday 1st October 2000

From Stoke Bruerne Top Lock No 14 to Milton Road Bridge No 2, Gayton arriving at 12:00 am. The time taken was 1 hours 20 minutes. 4.00 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 698 hours 10 minutes total cruising time, 1,624.50 miles and 1063 locks, averaging 3.85 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

A misty start to the morning but very clear through Blisworth Tunnel. Stopped for water at Gayton Junction (35 minutes) and then had to wait for 50 minutes before our pumpout was completed at Alvechurch Boats (£12). Moored opposite for lunch.

Grand Union Northampton Branch

From Milton Road Bridge No 2, Gayton to Rothersthorpe Bottom Lock No 13 arriving at 2:35 pm. The time taken was 1 hours 45 minutes. 1.50 miles and 13 locks, averaging 8.29 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 699 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 1,626.00 miles and 1076 locks, averaging 3.86 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came down the locks helped by two couples from Farnham. Moored by the aqueduct and invited them in for a cup of tea. A sunny day clouding over after we moored.

Monday 2nd October 2000

From Rothersthorpe Bottom Lock No 13 to Northampton Lock No 1 arriving at 11:15 am. The time taken was 1 hours 50 minutes. 3.50 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.64 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 701 hours 45 minutes total cruising time, 1,629.50 miles and 1081 locks, averaging 3.86 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came down the last four locks of the Northampton Branch and moored near Morrison's to get some shopping.

River Nene

From Northampton Lock No 1 to Cogenhoe Lock No 7 arriving at 2:50 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 5.88 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.85 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 704 hours 50 minutes total cruising time, 1,635.38 miles and 1087 locks, averaging 3.86 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Had lunch on the move after Billing Lock. Moored above Cogenhoe Lock. A grey and windy day.

Tuesday 3rd October 2000

From Cogenhoe Lock No 7 to Wellingborough Bridge arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 3 hours 45 minutes. 6.63 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.37 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 708 hours 35 minutes total cruising time, 1,642.00 miles and 1093 locks, averaging 3.86 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Cogenhoe lock has had the guilotine gate electrified since we came through in April. Stopped at Wellingborough and went to the Dog & Duck Beefeater for lunch (£22.54 for two courses each plus drinks) and then went to Tesco's for shopping. Filled with water before setting off.

From Wellingborough Bridge to Irthlingborough Lock No 17 arriving at 6:15 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 5.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.68 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 710 hours 40 minutes total cruising time, 1,647.75 miles and 1097 locks, averaging 3.86 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Three boys were swimming in Highham Lock when we arrived. Moored on the visitor moorings before the lock with two other boats. There is a water point and pumpout here now. A dull day, breezy at times.

Wednesday 4th October 2000

From Irthlingborough Lock No 17 to Wadenhoe Lock No 24 arriving at 2:15 pm. The time taken was 5 hours. 12.50 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.90 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 715 hours 40 minutes total cruising time, 1,660.25 miles and 1104 locks, averaging 3.86 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Kept going to get past Titchmarsh while the river levels were normal. Stopped at the King's Head for lunch (drinks and sandwiches £9.95 for two). Had a walk round the village after lunch. Had dinner at the King's Head (Fillet of Pork £9.75, Roast Pumpkin £8.50 - £36.25 in all with desserts, wine and coffee). A mostly sunny day.

Thursday 5th October 2000

From Wadenhoe Lock No 24 to Perio Lock No 30 arriving at 1:45 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 35 minutes. 9.75 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.44 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 720 hours 15 minutes total cruising time, 1,670.00 miles and 1110 locks, averaging 3.86 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.
Saw a llama at Lilford Park and a kingfisher Below Perio Lock. Moored at Fotheringhay (£2) for lunch . A day of sunshine and cloud a hail storm as we moored and some showers this afternoon

Friday 6th October 2000

From Perio Lock No 30 to Wansford Bridge arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours. 8.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.25 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 723 hours 15 minutes total cruising time, 1,678.75 miles and 1114 locks, averaging 3.86 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Saw a kingfisher below Wandsford Lock. Stopped at the Haycock for lunch (Red Snapper £10.75, Spinach & Goat's Cheese Pancakes - 2 burnt so not charged for).

From Wansford Bridge to Orton Lock No 37 arriving at 4:45 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 9.00 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 726 hours 20 minutes total cruising time, 1,687.75 miles and 1117 locks, averaging 3.86 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Found Orton Lock full with the top gates open. Moored by the Boathouse pub. A cool but mostly sunny day.

Saturday 7th October 2000

From Orton Lock No 37 to Peterborough Bridge arriving at 9:05 am. The time taken was 30 minutes. 2.00 miles and No locks, averaging 4.00 lock/miles per hour. Came down to the facilities where we stopped for pumpout and shopping.

Back on our home mooring. A rainy day for unloading the boat.
