1998 Voyage - October

Wednesday 1st October 1998

At Hartshill Wharf

Finished my article in the morning then went down to the BW depot to fill with water (25 minutes). Moved through the bridge to the visitor moorings for lunch . A cloudy day with some sunny intervals

Thursday 2nd October 1998

From Hartshill Wharf to Hawkesbury Junction arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 8.75 miles and No locks, averaging 3.18 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 672 hours 45 minutes total cruising time, 1,509.13 miles and 946 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped on the 7 day moorings just before the junction. Went tothe Greyhound for lunch (Turkey dinner £3.95 each). After lunch Beryl cut my hair. A grey day with rain in the afternoon.

Friday 3rd October 1998

From Hawkesbury Junction to Easenhall Lane Bridge No 34 arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 8.00 miles and No locks, averaging 2.82 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 675 hours 35 minutes total cruising time, 1,517.13 miles and 946 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came through the stop lock and up the Oxford Canal, a lot of boats on the move. Stopped at Rose Narrowboats for a pumpout (£12). Moored on the piling a little way beyond the bridge and went to the Raven for lunch (Plaice £6, Gammon & egg £6.30).

Oxford Canal (Northern Section)

From Easenhall Lane Bridge No 34 to Brownsover Arm (disused) arriving at 4:55 pm. The time taken was 1 hours 50 minutes. 4.88 miles and No locks, averaging 2.66 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 677 hours 25 minutes total cruising time, 1,522.00 miles and 946 locks, averaging 3.64 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored just past the bridge, handy for Tesco's. A cool grey day.

Saturday 4th October 1998

From Brownsover Arm (disused) to Hillmorton Top Locks Nos 6 and 7 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 1 hours 40 minutes. 2.88 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.53 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 679 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 1,524.88 miles and 949 locks, averaging 3.64 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went shopping at Tesco before setting off. Filled with water (30 minutes) at the bottom of the locks then came through and had lunch at the top. A lot of boats coming through today.

From Hillmorton Top Locks Nos 6 and 7 to Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 arriving at 4:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 7.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.39 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 681 hours 40 minutes total cruising time, 1,532.63 miles and 950 locks, averaging 3.64 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped at Ivor Batchelor's for diesel (74 litres for £14) then went on to moor just before the second marina exit. A grey day, cooler with showers in the afternoon.

Sunday 5th October 1998

From Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 to Whilton Bottom Lock No 13 arriving at 1:20 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 55 minutes. 5.25 miles and 12 locks, averaging 4.40 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 685 hours 35 minutes total cruising time, 1,537.88 miles and 962 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came up the Braunston locks, through the tunnel and down the 7 Buckby locks before stopping for lunch opposite the marina.

From Whilton Bottom Lock No 13 to High House Bridge No 29 arriving at 4:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 5.00 miles and No locks, averaging 2.22 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 687 hours 50 minutes total cruising time, 1,542.88 miles and 962 locks, averaging 3.64 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored just past the bridge. A cloudy day with showers and a few sunny intervals late in the day.

Monday 6th October 1998

From High House Bridge No 29 to Rothersthorpe Bottom Lock No 13 arriving at 1:05 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 7.50 miles and 13 locks, averaging 5.59 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 691 hours 30 minutes total cruising time, 1,550.38 miles and 975 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Saw a kingfisher as we approached Bugbrooke. Dumped the rubish at Gayton Junction and came down the first 12 locks. Met two boats coming up. Moored for lunch just before the lock.

Grand Union Northampton Branch to River Nene

From Rothersthorpe Bottom Lock No 13 to South Bridge, Northampton arriving at 4:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours. 3.25 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 693 hours 30 minutes total cruising time, 1,553.63 miles and 979 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came down the last 5 locks and on to the Nene. Met one boat on the move and saw Coral, a Wyvern Shipping Co boat, moored above the last lock. Moored between the bridge and the lock. A cold grey day, but dry.

Tuesday 7th October 1998

From South Bridge, Northampton to Cogenhoe Lock No 7 arriving at 4:05 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 6.13 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.26 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 696 hours 35 minutes total cruising time, 1,559.75 miles and 986 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went shopping at the new Morrison's before setting off throogh Northampton Lock. Stopped for water past the lock but found that the lock on the tap was jammed. Rang the EA and had lunch while we waited for action. Rang them back to find that they had passed the buck to the local council. We moved on without water. The channel has changed approaching Weston Favel flood gates. Saw a kingfisher at Billing. Moored just above the lock. Cloud, sunshine and showers today.

Wednesday 8th October 1998

From Cogenhoe Lock No 7 to Wellingborough Bridge arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 6.63 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.52 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 700 hours 10 minutes total cruising time, 1,566.38 miles and 992 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Followed Oodunit down the river, though we did not see them until we moored. Got caught on the chains at Barton Lock, tipped and came off. Moored by the park. The Cottage no longer does food so we went to the Dog & Duck, a Beefeater (Fish & Chips £6.45, Lamb Shank £9.95) came back to the boat for more drinks . A dull windy day

Thursday 9th October 1998

From Wellingborough Bridge to Irthlingborough Lock No 17 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 5.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.03 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 702 hours 35 minutes total cruising time, 1,572.13 miles and 996 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.
Stopped on the visitor moorings just before the lock for lunch.
River Nene: Ditchford Lock No 15 - October 1998

From Irthlingborough Lock No 17 to Islip Lock No 22 arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 7.75 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.73 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 706 hours total cruising time, 1,579.88 miles and 1001 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored at the Middle Nene Sailing Club. A sunny morning but increasingly cloudy in the afternoon and rain this evening.

Friday 10th October 1998

From Islip Lock No 22 to Upper Barnwell Lock No 26 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 8.25 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.97 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 709 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 1,588.13 miles and 1005 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Saw Dutch at Wadenhoe. Saw a kingfisher just before the lock. Had lunch at the Mill (Plaice and Turkey £8.95 each).

From Upper Barnwell Lock No 26 to Perio Lock No 30 arriving at 4:45 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 6.25 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.51 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 712 hours total cruising time, 1,594.38 miles and 1009 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.
Saw a kingfisher between Cottershall and Perio locks. A lot of rowers on this reach and the previous one. Moored at Fotheringhay (£2). A dry day with sunshine and cloud.
River Nene: Lower Barnwell Lock No 27 - October 1998

Saturday 11th October 1998

From Perio Lock No 30 to Orton Lock No 37 arriving at 3:10 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 55 minutes. 17.75 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.18 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 717 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 1,612.13 miles and 1016 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

All the mooring bollards at Yarwell have disappeared. Had lunch on the move just before Alwalton Lock. A lot of fishermen out today. Saw 3 kingfishers today, the last just before we turned off to moor at the Boathouse. Had dinner at the Boathouse (Plaice £4.35, Jambalaya £625, desserts £2.45). A dry day, after overnight rain, cloudy in the morning but quiet sunny this afternoon.

Sunday 12th October 1998

From Orton Lock No 37 to Peterborough Junction arriving at 10:10 am. The time taken was 40 minutes. 2.50 miles and No locks, averaging 3.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 718 hours 35 minutes total cruising time, 1,614.63 miles and 1016 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped for pump-out and shopping on the embankment (40 minutes) then came home. A sunny day.
