1997 Main Voyage - October

Coventry Canal to Oxford Canal (Northern Section)

Tuesday 1st October 1997

From Coventry Basin to Ansty Bridge No 14 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 9.25 miles and No locks, averaging 2.92 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 551 hours 30 minutes total cruising time, 1,135.88 miles and 882 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came back up the Coventry Canal. Moored for lunch just past the bridge.

Oxford Canal (Northern Section)

From Ansty Bridge No 14 to Newbold Tunnel (South-east end) arriving at 4:20 pm. The time taken was 3 hours. 7.75 miles and No locks, averaging 2.58 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 554 hours 30 minutes total cruising time, 1,143.63 miles and 882 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Saw Aqua Lady (with painting of a water mill on the side) near Bedworth). Moored on the visitor moorings and went to the Boat for dinner (Gammon & egg £3.50. Mediterranean Lamb £5.50). A warm day with some sunshine.

Wednesday 2nd October 1997

From Newbold Tunnel (South-east end) to Brownsover Arm (disused) arriving at 9:35 am. The time taken was 35 minutes. 1.38 miles and No locks, averaging 2.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 555 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 1,145.00 miles and 882 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored to do shopping at Tesco's.

From Brownsover Arm (disused) to Clifton Wharf arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 35 minutes. 1.13 miles and No locks, averaging 1.93 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 555 hours 40 minutes total cruising time, 1,146.13 miles and 882 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Saw Wingletang again and Dorpets Dream. Moored opposite the golf course again. Had lunch.

From Clifton Wharf to Hillmorton Top Locks Nos 6 and 7 arriving at 2:45 pm. The time taken was 1 hours. 1.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 556 hours 40 minutes total cruising time, 1,147.88 miles and 885 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped for 30 minutes at the bottom of the locks to fill with water. Moored at the top for the night. A fine sunny day.

Thursday 3rd October 1997

From Hillmorton Top Locks Nos 6 and 7 to Braunston Junction arriving at 11:25 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 7.00 miles and No locks, averaging 3.11 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 558 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 1,154.88 miles and 885 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped opposite the facilities by the junction and had lunch. Bought some side fenders and halogen bulbs from Midland Chandlers. Jemi moored a little way behind us. Fred & Joyce arrived about 5pm and later we all had dinner at the Mill Stream (Fred paid). A fine mostly sunny day.

From Braunston Junction to Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 5 minutes. 13.75 miles and No locks, averaging 2.70 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 564 hours total cruising time, 1,168.63 miles and 885 locks, averaging 3.64 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Met Mike & Jenny Smith, our new neighbours from Jemi, on our way back from Midland Chandlers. Filled with water before setting off to Napton. As we were heading down towards the locks we got a call from Balliol Fowden of Braunston Boats asking if we could go in a day early, so we turned at the winding hole before the locks and headed straight back, having lunch on the move. Got into Braunston Marina and moored beside Jemi at the pumpout at 15.50. Had a pumpout (£5) and collected our new front fender (£56). Moored at Braunston Boats. Had dinner at the Old Plough (Gammon Steak and Plaice £11 the two). A bright sunny day.

Monday 7th October 1997

From Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 to Buckby Top Lock No 7 arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 4.00 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.80 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 566 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 1,172.63 miles and 891 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Back in the water after hull blackening. Had the stern glan repacked (£23.50). Went through the locks with two men on a blue narrowboat and a little BW boat. Had lunch on the move and stopped for water above the locks.

Grand Union Main Line to Grand Union Northampton Branch

From Buckby Top Lock No 7 to Milton Road Bridge No 2, Gayton arriving at 6:00 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 40 minutes. 12.25 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.13 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 570 hours 45 minutes total cruising time, 1,184.88 miles and 898 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came through Buckby locks with the two men on a blue narrowboat. At 1545 we stopped for 10 minutes at Millar Marine for diesel (£19.45 for 103.5 litres). Moored opposte Gayton Marina. A day that started with rain but soon cleared giving a sunny afternoon.

Tuesday 8th October 1997

From Milton Road Bridge No 2, Gayton to South Bridge, Northampton arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 4.75 miles and 17 locks, averaging 5.93 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 574 hours 25 minutes total cruising time, 1,189.63 miles and 915 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Came down the GU Northampton Branch and moored just before the lock for lunch.

River Nene

From South Bridge, Northampton to Billing Lock No 6 arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 4.75 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.69 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 577 hours 20 minutes total cruising time, 1,194.38 miles and 921 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped for water at the sanitary station below the lock. Spent the night on the visitor moorings in the marina. After dinner we went for a drink in the Mill. A dull wet day.

Wednesday 9th October 1997

From Billing Lock No 6 to Wellingborough Bridge arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 3 hours 55 minutes. 8.00 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 581 hours 15 minutes total cruising time, 1,202.38 miles and 928 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Met Jemi moored at White Mills Lock and went on together. Saw a kingfisher. Moored next to Caldon & Ashby on the visitor moorings and had lunch at the Cottage with Mike and Jenny. Did our shopping at Tesco's.

From Wellingborough Bridge to Irthlingborough Bridge arriving at 6:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 5.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.41 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 583 hours 40 minutes total cruising time, 1,207.63 miles and 931 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped at the visitor moorings with Jemi, another narrowboat was already moored there. A windy start to the day gave way to rain then sunshine in the late afternoon.

Thursday 10th October 1997

From Irthlingborough Bridge to Islip Lock No 22 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 8.25 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.27 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 587 hours total cruising time, 1,215.88 miles and 937 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Saw a kingfisher. Moored below the lock, with Jemi, on the Middle Nene Sailing Club moorings for lunch.

From Islip Lock No 22 to Upper Barnwell Lock No 26 arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 8.25 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.97 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 590 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 1,224.13 miles and 941 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Scraped under the low bridge before Titchmarsh Lock. Water running fast through the locks. Moored below the lock at Barnwell Mill and went on to Jemi for coffee. Had dinner with Mike and Jenny at the Mill. A mostly sunny day.

Friday 11th October 1997

From Upper Barnwell Lock No 26 to Yarwell Lock No 33 arriving at 2:00 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 20 minutes. 13.25 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.80 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 595 hours 25 minutes total cruising time, 1,237.38 miles and 948 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored for lunch, with Jemi, on the visitor moorings below the lock, these were occupied by fishermen.

From Yarwell Lock No 33 to Alwalton Lock No 36 arriving at 6:20 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 7.00 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.93 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 598 hours 50 minutes total cruising time, 1,244.38 miles and 951 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Saw 5 kingfishers, a fox and a lot of rabbits on our trip today. It was getting dark when we moored at Ferry Meadows. Mike and Jenny went on home. A cloudy day with showers.

Saturday 12th October 1997

From Alwalton Lock No 36 to Peterborough Junction arriving at 11:05 am. The time taken was 1 hours 40 minutes. 6.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.35 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 600 hours 30 minutes total cruising time, 1,250.63 miles and 952 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped for 15 minutes for a pumpout on the embankment. Beryl did some shopping at Asda before we went home.
