1997 Spring Voyage - March

River Nene to Middle Level - Whittlesey Dyke

Wednesday 27th March 1997

From Peterborough Junction to Ashline Sluice arriving at 12:05 am. The time taken was 2 hours. 8.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 2 hours total cruising time, 8.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.88 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Got to Standground lock about 10.20 and bought a ML Saanitary Station key from the lock keeper (£2). As we were about to go through the lock another boat (Poppy) arrived. Stopped for lunch on the Whittlesey visitor moorings.

Middle Level - Whittlesey Dyke to Middle Level - Old River Nene

From Ashline Sluice to March arriving at 5:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 45 minutes. 10.63 miles and No locks, averaging 2.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 5 hours 45 minutes total cruising time, 19.38 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.54 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

On our way we met another boat Capricorns' Dulcitudo from Broxbourne, trying to go backwards in the wind. At 60 feet they were too long to go through Ashline lock forwards. we breasted up with them, stern to stem, and took them down to the cross river junction. A sunny day, with increasing wind and cloud.

Thursday 28th March 1997

From March to Upwell arriving at 12:10 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 7.13 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.15 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 8 hours 20 minutes total cruising time, 26.50 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.42 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Did some shopping in March before setting off. A lot of boats on the move and very windy. Followed a cruiser and a narrowboat to Marmont Priory Lock. Went through the lock with a 48 foot narrowboat that arrived after us. Stopped for lunch on the jetty by the church.

Middle Level - Old River Nene to Middle Level - Well Creek

From Upwell to Salter's Lode Sluice arriving at 3:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 6.13 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.42 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 10 hours 25 minutes total cruising time, 32.63 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.42 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.
Passed a lot of boats from March having a rally at Outwell. Kookabura (a 48 foot narrowboat built by Charlie Fox) moored behnd us. A windy day of sunshine and some cloudy intervals.

Friday 29th March 1997

From Salter's Lode Sluice to Denver Sluice arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 1 hours 45 minutes. 0.38 miles and 2 locks, averaging 1.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 12 hours 10 minutes total cruising time, 33.00 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.12 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.
Alistair Chambers arrived in Hillpenny and told us that no one could go through the tidal doors on to the Old Bedford River. Took us 55 minutes to get up to Denver lock as we had to wait for other boats locking through Salter's Lode. Stopped hoping to get lunch at the Windmill but they were not doing food due to building work.

Old West River (Great Ouse)

From Denver Sluice to Ely, A142 Road bridge arriving at 4:15 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 13.00 miles and No locks, averaging 4.73 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 14 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 46.00 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.42 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Passed quite a lot of boats as we came up river. Had lunch on the move. Moored by the marina bridge. A cool day of sunshine and cloud but not so windy as yesterday.

Saturday 30th March 1997

From Ely, A142 Road bridge to Aldreth Bridge arriving at 1:35 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 11.75 miles and No locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 18 hours 10 minutes total cruising time, 57.75 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.45 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Filled up with water at Ely Marina (50p) before setting off. Stopped for lunch before High Bridge.

Old West River (Great Ouse) to River Great Ouse

From Aldreth Bridge to St Ives Bridge arriving at 6:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 11.13 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.84 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 21 hours 35 minutes total cruising time, 68.88 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.52 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored opposite Hemingford Meadow. Saw a lot of boats today and shared two locks with different cruisers. A sunny start and end to the day with more cloud around mid-day.

Sunday 31st March 1997

From St Ives Bridge to Huntingdon arriving at 11:55 am. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 5.63 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 23 hours 40 minutes total cruising time, 74.50 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.53 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

The Parkers came by on their little boat in the morning and stopped for a brief chat. Stopped in the park and went into town. Had lunch at the George (Pork chops £5.95 each) and did some shopping in Iceland. When we got back to the boat we found Capricorns' Dulcitudo moored next to us. Had a long chat with the lady while Tony went off for some shopping.

From Huntingdon to St Neots arriving at 6:55 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 55 minutes. 10.13 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 27 hours 35 minutes total cruising time, 84.63 miles and 13 locks, averaging 3.54 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored on the floating pontoons near the bridge. A good trip sharing most locks with other boats. A sunny and quite warm day.
