1996 Main Voyage - September

Saturday 1st September 1996

From Napton Bottom Lock No 8 to Napton Lock No 15 arriving at 2:20 pm. The time taken was 5 hours. 1.63 miles and 7 locks, averaging 1.73 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 675 hours 25 minutes total cruising time, 1,502.50 miles and 938 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Filled up with watter att the bottom lock and spoke to the people on Catflap, they seem very nice but went up the locks in front of us very slowly. The boat immediately in front of us, a Napton Narrowboat crew by a nice young couple, got stuck in a lock for about an hour while the lock keeper tried to get an obtruction (a large waterlogged trunk) from the bottom gate. Moored at the ttop for lunch.

From Napton Lock No 15 to Fenny Compton Wharf arriving at 5:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 7.63 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.45 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 677 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 1,510.13 miles and 939 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored just before the pub. A lot of boats on the summit level. Saw a mink swimming across the cut. A warm sunny day with some cloud.

Sunday 2nd September 1996

From Fenny Compton Wharf to Claydon Bottom Lock No 21 arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 4.00 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.60 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 680 hours 25 minutes total cruising time, 1,514.13 miles and 944 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Walked into Wormleighton before setting off this morning. Saw the hoteloats Tzarina and her butty coming up the locks. Moored at the bottom for lunch.

From Claydon Bottom Lock No 21 to Cropredy Lock No 25 arriving at 3:10 pm. The time taken was 1 hours 5 minutes. 2.25 miles and 4 locks, averaging 5.77 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 681 hours 30 minutes total cruising time, 1,516.38 miles and 948 locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moorred just before the lock. Had dinner at the Red Lion (Chicken Malibu £6.95, Jumbo Cod £4.95). A warm day of cloud and sunny interrvals, some light rain early in the morning.

Monday 3rd September 1996

From Cropredy Lock No 25 to Banbury Lock No 29 arriving at 11:50 am. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 4.50 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.19 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 684 hours 10 minutes total cruising time, 1,520.88 miles and 952 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Filled with water at Cropredy Wharf. The pound below Slat Mill Lock was down about a foot. Moored beyond Albion Bridge and went to collect the post, buy a new PC mouse and had lunch at the Exchange (Ham bagettes £1.95 each). Did some more shopping in the afternoon, including at M&S and Somerfield's.

From Banbury Lock No 29 to Twyford Bridge No 177 arriving at 4:55 pm. The time taken was 1 hours. 2.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 685 hours 10 minutes total cruising time, 1,523.63 miles and 953 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moved on to moor just before the bridge. A cloudy day with some sunny intervals.

Tuesday 4th September 1996

From Twyford Bridge No 177 to Aynho Bridge No 190 arriving at 11:55 am. The time taken was 1 hours 50 minutes. 4.13 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 687 hours total cruising time, 1,527.75 miles and 956 locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped at Aynho Wharf and saw Jack and Ian, got rid of the old engine oil and bought four tins of paint (£40). Went to the Great Western for lunch (Chicken Chassier £5.95 each), very good.

From Aynho Bridge No 190 to Heyford Wharf Bridge No 206 arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 6.00 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.09 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 689 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 1,533.75 miles and 959 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored just before the boatyard. A day of cloud with some sunny intervals but a chilly breeze att times.

Wednesday 5th September 1996

From Heyford Wharf Bridge No 206 to Enslow Bridge No 216 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 3 hours. 5.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 2.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 692 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 1,539.00 miles and 962 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Filled with water at Heyford and spoke to Doug from Greyhound, a 58' 3" semi-trad which he said it largely based on the design for Lorna Ann. Saw Dolly ****, which we had seen on the Calder & Hebble. Had lunch at the Rock of Gibraltar (Egg, Sausage & Chips £3.50, Jacket Potato, Cheese & Bacon £4.20).

From Enslow Bridge No 216 to Thrupp Bend arriving at 3:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hours 10 minutes. 2.50 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.86 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 694 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 1,541.50 miles and 964 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored n the visitor moorings just after the lift bridge. Another day of sunshine and cloud, much like yesterday.

Thursday 6th September 1996

From Thrupp Bend to Isis Lock No 46 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 6.50 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.00 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 697 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 1,548.00 miles and 969 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Followed a College Cruiser down through the locks, they stopped after Wolvercote lock and we went on to moor just before Isis Lock. Had lunch at the Piza Hut and went shopping for films, mop, suction hooks and stain remover. A warm sunny day.

Saturday 8th September 1996

From Isis Lock No 46 to Eynsham Lock arriving at 11:40 am. The time taken was 1 hours 55 minutes. 5.88 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.11 lock/miles per hour. Moored below the lock for water and pumpout (£5).

River Thames

From Eynsham Lock to Osney Bridge arriving at 2:10 pm. The time taken was 1 hours 55 minutes. 6.00 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.17 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 701 hours 45 minutes total cruising time, 1,559.88 miles and 973 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Returned to Oxford aand winded just before the lock, turned back onto the visitor moorings faacing upstream ready for Rosemary's arrival tomorrow. Had a late lunch and touched up the paintwork that I scratched getting away from Eynsham Lock moorings. A cloudy, dry day with sunny periods.

Sunday 9th September 1996

From Osney Bridge to Newbridge arriving at 5:00 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 10 minutes. 13.50 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.44 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 705 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 1,573.38 miles and 978 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Met Rosemary at the station and started cruising after lunch. Saw a Great Creasted Grebe eating a fish. Moored at the Rose Revived Inn behind the cruiser Wynburn. Had dinner in the Rose Revived (Cauliflower Bake £5.25, Salmon Steak £6.25, Minted Lamb £6.55) Had drinks after dinner and got chatting to the couple from Wynburn. A cool and cloudy day with some sun in the evening.

Monday 10th September 1996

From Newbridge to Radcot Bridge arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 10.13 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 709 hours 30 minutes total cruising time, 1,583.50 miles and 981 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped for water at Shifford Lock and for lunch about a quarter of a mile past the bridge. Saw Wynburn again.

From Radcot Bridge to Ha'penny Bridge, Lechlade arriving at 4:15 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 6.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.27 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 711 hours 40 minutes total cruising time, 1,589.75 miles and 984 locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored just before the bridge, in front of Wynburn. Had a look round the town and did some shopping. Saw 3 kingfishers and a dabchick today. A mostly cool and cloudy day.

Tuesday 11th September 1996

From Ha'penny Bridge, Lechlade to Grafton Lock arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 1 hours 35 minutes. 4.25 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.95 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 713 hours 15 minutes total cruising time, 1,594.00 miles and 986 locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went into Lechlade and walked back via the lock. Repaired the canvas that the cow had damaged. Stopped at Kelmscot and went to the Plough for lunch (Trout £7.25 each, Spiced Vegetable Buck Wheat Pancake £5.95), very good.

From Grafton Lock to Newbridge arriving at 5:40 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 12.13 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.40 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 716 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 1,606.13 miles and 990 locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored by the Rose Revived. Saw three kingfishers today. A warm and mainly sunny day.

Wednesday 12th September 1996

From Newbridge to Osney Bridge arriving at 1:30 pm. The time taken was 4 hours. 13.50 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.63 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 720 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 1,619.63 miles and 995 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.
Came through some of the locks with Beulah. Moored on the visitor moorings and went to the Piza Hut for lunch and round the shops in the afternoon. A cool day with sunny periods.

From Osney Bridge to Abingdon Lock arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 8.88 miles and 4 locks, averaging 5.15 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 723 hours 25 minutes total cruising time, 1,628.50 miles and 999 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went through the locks with Cadia, a cruiser style narrowboat from the Thames. Stopped for water and lunch above the lock.

From Abingdon Lock to Wallingford Bridge arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 13.50 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.77 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 727 hours 5 minutes total cruising time, 1,642.00 miles and 1003 locks, averaging 3.64 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Rosemary steered from just after Culham Lock until just before Days lock, taking the boat through Clifton Lock. Moored a little way before the bridge and Rosemary and I waalked into the town before dinner. A warmer and mostly sunny day.

Friday 14th September 1996

From Wallingford Bridge to Gatehampton Railway Bridge arriving at 5:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 7.25 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 729 hours 30 minutes total cruising time, 1,649.25 miles and 1005 locks, averaging 3.64 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went for a walk in the morning and took Rosemary to lunch at a pub in Wallingford before catching the bus to Didcot to see her off on the 14.57 train. We had hoped to moor at Goring but there were n moorings below the lock. Moored next to Beulah near the Child Beale Wildlife Park. A warm sunny day.

Saturday 15th September 1996

From Gatehampton Railway Bridge to River Kennet Junction arriving at 11:55 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 10.13 miles and 3 locks, averaging 5.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 731 hours 45 minutes total cruising time, 1,659.38 miles and 1008 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped for shopping in Tesco's. Went back to tthe boat for lunch, . I walked up by the Kennet and took some pictures. Saw Wynburn again and they stopped to say goodbye

Moored just before the lock cut. Another day that started cool and misty and developed into warm sunshine.

Sunday 16th September 1996

Set off at 10.10 aand stopped at Shiplake Lock for water and pump outt (£5). Moored for lunch on the Municipal Moorings (£5.50 for 24 hours). After lunch I went out to take photo's. A warm sunny day again.
River Thames: Between Sonning Bridge and Marsh Lock Cruiser - September 1996

Monday 17th September 1996

From Henley Bridge to Marlow Lock arriving at 11:40 am. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 8.25 miles and 4 locks, averaging 5.07 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 736 hours 25 minutes total cruising time, 1,676.00 miles and 1015 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored on the visitor's moorings above the bridge (£5.25 but not collected). Had lunch at a restaruant in the High Street (Onion Consume, Lamb Chops £4.95 +10% service charge each). Walked down to the lock and took more pictures. A bright sunny day with a stiff breeze.

Tuesday 18th September 1996

From Marlow Lock to Cookham Lock arriving at 10:45 am. The time taken was 1 hours 30 minutes. 4.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.50 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 737 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 1,680.25 miles and 1016 locks, averaging 3.65 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

As we past Bourne End Dad rang to say that Mum had a stroke yesterday and was in Hospital. When we got to the lock there was a delay due to work being done on the gate. The lock keeper said we could moor in the lock cut and get a train from Cookham. Got back to the boat at about 8.15 pm. A mostly cool and cloudy day.

Wednesday 19th September 1996

From Cookham Lock to Windsor Bridge arriving at 12:00 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 9.38 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.50 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 740 hours 40 minutes total cruising time, 1,689.63 miles and 1019 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Filled with water above Cookham Lock before setting off. Stopped on the Eton side of the river just before the bridge (£4 mooring fee not collected). Had lunch in the Pizza Hut and went shopping in Superdrug and Waitrose.

From Windsor Bridge to Staines Bridge arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 7.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.10 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 743 hours 10 minutes total cruising time, 1,696.88 miles and 1022 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Shared locks with two boats of young germans, one boys boat and one girls, although there was a certain amount of swapping about at locks. Moored on the towpath visitor moorings just below the bridge. A mostly wet day with one long dry period after lunch.

Thursday 20th September 1996

From Staines Bridge to Walton Bridge arriving at 11:25 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 7.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.56 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 745 hours 25 minutes total cruising time, 1,704.13 miles and 1025 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped in Shepperton Marina for diesel (165 litres at 19.6p = £32.35). I also left my battery charger for repair.

From Walton Bridge to Sunbury Lock arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 25 minutes. 1.63 miles and No locks, averaging 3.90 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 745 hours 50 minutes total cruising time, 1,705.75 miles and 1025 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

The lock had an "Unmanned" notice on it so we stopped for lunch. The lock keeper came back shortlyafterwards but we finished our lunch before going through, accompanied by a massive steel cruiser.

From Sunbury Lock to Teddington Lock arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours. 7.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 747 hours 50 minutes total cruising time, 1,713.50 miles and 1027 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped for water at Molesey Lock. Moored above the lock ready for an 8.30 start tomorrow. A dull, dry cool day.

Friday 21st September 1996

From Teddington Lock to Bulls Bridge Junction arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 45 minutes. 11.13 miles and 13 locks, averaging 5.08 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 752 hours 35 minutes total cruising time, 1,724.63 miles and 1040 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Set off through Teddington Lock at 8.35, a grey heron standing on the lock side to watch us go. A lot of scullers on the river. As we arrived at Brentford lock the lady lock keeper told us that there was another boat in front waiting to go up the locks. This proved to be Pippin, a 60 foot springer,and we shared all the following locks with them. Saw a kingfisher above Thames Lock and several golden eye ducks further up the canal. Had lunch on the move and stopped at Tesco's for shopping. Mostly cloudy with some sunny periods.

Saturday 22nd September 1996

From Bulls Bridge Junction to Widewater Lock No 86 arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 8.38 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.17 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 756 hours 10 minutes total cruising time, 1,733.00 miles and 1043 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Picked up a sweater on the prop. Saw Felius Catus II coming down the canal. Shared some locks with a lone Irishman in a red and cream narrowboat. Moored or lunch, . a little way before the lock. A cool cloudy day

Sunday 23rd September 1996

From Widewater Lock No 86 to Batchworth Lock No 81 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 4.38 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.41 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 758 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 1,737.38 miles and 1048 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went through a couple of locks with Merganser, from Dunstable Boat Club, then a few more with a mother and daughter and their two lurchers. Stopped below the lock for 25 minutes for water and moored above the lock for lunch, which we had at the White Bear (New York Chicken £3.75 each).

From Batchworth Lock No 81 to Hunton Bridge Top Lock No 72 arriving at 6:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 5.13 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.68 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 762 hours 45 minutes total cruising time, 1,742.50 miles and 1057 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Moored near the Kings Head, although it took a little while to find a mooring due to the shallow water. A cloudy day with some bright spells but no real sun.

Monday 24th September 1996

From Hunton Bridge Top Lock No 72 to Boxmoor Bottom Lock No 64 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 4.38 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.34 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 765 hours 50 minutes total cruising time, 1,746.88 miles and 1066 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went through most of the locks with Merganser then stopped above the lock and went to the Heath Park for lunch (Tuna Jacket Potato and Ham Salad Sandwich £5.25 the two).

From Boxmoor Bottom Lock No 64 to Berkhamsted Top Lock No 53 arriving at 5:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 4.25 miles and 11 locks, averaging 4.26 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 769 hours 25 minutes total cruising time, 1,751.13 miles and 1077 locks, averaging 3.68 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Stopped at Winkwell for a pumpout (£10) then moored above Lock 54 for the night. A warm sunny day following a chilly start.

Collected the post and went shoppingg in Tesco's in Berkhamsted. Had lunch on the boat before setting off. Filled with water and moored above the lock. A mild bright day with some sunshine.

From Cowroast Lock No 46 (Summit Lock) to Marsworth Junction arriving at 3:35 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 3.88 miles and 8 locks, averaging 5.48 lock/miles per hour. Went for a walk into Aldbury and posted a cheque for the PARIS 20th anniversary tickets. At lunch time Kelper arrived and moored next to us. We set off after lunch. Moored on the junction. Had dinner at the White Lion (Cornish Pie £4.55, Lamb Cutlets £7.95, Banoffi Pie £2.50 each). A cloudy day, bright in the morning but windy with light showers in the afternoon.

Thursday 27th September 1996

From Marsworth Junction to Church Lock No 29 arriving at 1:05 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 6.13 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.95 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 777 hours 55 minutes total cruising time, 1,763.75 miles and 1101 locks, averaging 3.68 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went through the first few locks with a youg couple on Speedwell, which they had just finished fitting out. Stopped for lunch just beloe the lock.

From Church Lock No 29 to Leighton Buzzard Bridge No 114 arriving at 2:30 pm. The time taken was 50 minutes. 2.00 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.80 lock/miles per hour. Stopped and did our shopping in Tesco's.

Due to there being only 2 hour moorings available near Tesco's and only long term moorings beyond we had to move to opposite tthe Wyvern Shipping base to moor for the night. A mostly sunny day with some periods of cloud and a couple of very light showers. On Saturday we went shopping for an outfit for Beryl. Had lunch at the Golden Bell (Ham, Egg & Chips, £3.50 each). Went back to the boat for drinks, . A mostly cloudy day

Went through the locks with Admiral, from Willowbridge. Stopped for water at Willowbridge Marina and had lunch while filling up.

From Orchard Mill Bridge No 102 to Bowler's Bridge No 91 arriving at 3:15 pm. The time taken was 1 hours 35 minutes. 3.50 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.84 lock/miles per hour. Moored by the Peartree Bridge Inn next to Milton Keynes Marina. Saw the hotel boats Duke and Duchess at their base at Simpson, and Monkey Business. Went through Fenny Stratford lock with Benbow. A wet and windy night has been followed by a mild and breezy day.

Sunday 30th September 1996

Moored just past bridge 82a and walked into Milton Keynes shopping centre. Bought Beryl a new outfit for the PARIS do (Blazer £45, Blouse £30, Trousers £21, Shoes £42), some engine oil and a few things at Sainsbury's. Had lunch at the worst Pizza Hut we have ever been to.

From Little Woolstone Bridge No 83 to Galleon Bridge No 68 arriving at 5:45 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 7.00 miles and No locks, averaging 3.11 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 786 hours 10 minutes total cruising time, 1,784.00 miles and 1109 locks, averaging 3.68 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Had stones thrown at us by kids near New Bradwell. Moored just past the bridge. A dull but mostly dry day.
