Shared locks with "Forever Cut" up to Hungerford Bridge where we moored for shopping after filling up with water. Shopped in Gateway and haad lunch on the boat. "Forever Cut" and the Booth's had left before we returned for lunch.

Passed "Forever Cut" moored above Foxfield Bottom Lock and "Lady Godiva" moored above the Middle Lock. Mooring was difficult with very shallow banks and we went on but still had to moor well out from the bank. Another very hot day.

Thursday 5th May 1995

From Little Bedwyn Field Lock No 66 to Crofton Top Lock No 55 arriving at 1:30 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 3.50 miles and 11 locks, averaging 4.14 lock/miles per hour. After breakfast I walked up t Burnt Mill Lock to take some pictures and saw "Duorf II" and "Rajah Brooke" coming up through the lock and then "Forever Cut". Moored at Wolfhall bridge and had lunch in the cratch using our table for the first time. After a sleep we set off for Wilton village (shown in the wrong place in Nichollson's) and windmill, both well worth the walk. A pond, thatched cottages, well kept gardens and comparatively quiet. A very hot and sunny day again.

Friday 6th May 1995

From Crofton Top Lock No 55 to Wilcot Bridge arriving at 2:35 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 35 minutes. 7.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 2.56 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 156 hours 49 minutes total cruising time, 288.00 miles and 254 locks, averaging 3.46 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

At Wootton Rivers Bottom Lock we found that a BW man had held "Forever Cut" to wait for another boat dueto water and paddle problems. Mr Booth had repainted both sides of the boat while he was waiting. Filled with water at Pewsey Wharf and bought some ice creams but could not find anywhere to moor after the wharf so carried on and moored at Ladies bridge, just past Wide Water. Another very hot and sunny day but clouding over towards the evening.

Moored opposite the wharf. Many boats here have flags for VE day. A hot sunny day but with a welcome cooling breeze. Saw some white buds in the May bushes and some cygnets, both the first I have seen this year.

Monday 9th May 1995

From Devizes Top Lock No 50 to Devizes Bottom Lock No 22 arriving at 2:10 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 10 minutes. 2.00 miles and 28 locks, averaging 7.20 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 165 hours 9 minutes total cruising time, 300.50 miles and 283 locks, averaging 3.53 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Following a day at the wharf which was the scence of much VE day activity, including a Lions Club fair, we set off at 9 o'clock but there was "Duorf II" and "Rajah Brooke" and a pair of Hotel boats "Dawn" and "Dusk" in front of us so we had to wait for them to go through the flight before we set off with "Forever Cut". A very good trip down with mild but cloudy weather and the lock keeper helping us much of the way. Passed two boats coming up and "Duorf II" and "Rajah Brooke" got stuck in one of the locks, causing a bit of a hold up.

From Devizes Bottom Lock No 22 to Seend Bottom Lock No 17 arriving at 5:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 3.00 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.56 lock/miles per hour. After filling up with water and having lunch we set off proceeded by the hotel boats, their crew giving us help with the locks as we followed them down the flight, they stopped at the "Barge" just after lock 19. We moored a little way after the bottom lock. A wamer sunnier afternoon.

Totals for this voyage are 170 hours 49 minutes total cruising time, 308.00 miles and 290 locks, averaging 3.50 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

At Newton Swing Bridge this morning we saw the hotel boats "Dawn" and "Dusk" coming behind us so we waited for them and closed the bridge behind them, letting them go through the locks first. They raised the paddles for us before they left. We also saw three other hotel boat operators today including "Rose" and "Castle" and the wide boat "Harlequin". Stopped at Hilperton Marina for water and a pump out (£5) then past Ladydown bridge for lunch.

From Hilperton Bridge (B3105) to Holcombe Swing Bridge arriving at 6:20 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 9.50 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.07 lock/miles per hour. Magnificent secnery all the way to our moorings just before the bridge. Saw the first baby moorhens I had seen this year. Lots of wild flowers; buttercups, daisies, wild garlic, red campion, and many others. A warm sunny day.

Wednesday 11th May 1995

Came down the Widcombe flight meeting several boats coming up. Moored on the river just below Pulteney weir (£3.50 for 24hours) and went into bath for lunch, at the "Crystal Palace", and shopping, Beryl bought three cotton shirts and I got some socks. We then returned to the boat and then went off again to make two trips to Sainsbury's. A dull day with some light rain in the afternoon.

Cruised all day, having lunch as we did the tidal section below Hanham Lock, then through the open gates of Netham Lock and into the harbour. We moored by the Lloyds Bank building opposite Prince's Wharf. Filled up with water at one of the many water points on the visitor's moorings, although their "standard" tap fitting does not appear to be the same as a BW one. It was a long walk to the Harbour Master's office to pay the 48 hour Navigation and Mooring fee (£17.65). A cool and cloudy start to the day gave way to increasing sunny periods.

Sunday 15th May 1995

From Cumberland Basin Entrance Lock No 2 to Netham Lock No 1 arriving at 10:05 am. The time taken was 1 hours. 3.00 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.00 lock/miles per hour. After an eventful two days in the Floating Harbour we left to make our way back towards Bath. Just before the lock the engine started to labour and we quickly made for a nearby mooring, where I discovered a quilted dressing gown round the propeller. At the lock we met Duorf II and Rajah Brookes coming in the opposite direction. The lock was still not at a level so we decided to wait until the lock was open both ends (which I helped the lock keeper do just over an hour later) so that we would not have to fight against the flow.

Moored by Pulteney weir (£7 for two days) and had lunch. After lunch went up to John Rennie Cruises to see if my oil filters had arrived from Kuboto - they hadn't. Rang Beta Marina who assured me they had been sent. The day continued cloudy with showers. The evening before we left (19th) there was a big firework display.

Set off with Mum and Dad up through the Bath locks, Dad helped Beryl work the locks. The water was a bit low this morning, at Avoncliffe we saw a hire boat "Norton Star" leaning over at quite an angle due to the drop in water level. At Bradford on Avon we filled up with water and passed "Forever Cut". Had lunch on the move due to a lack of moorings past Hillperton. Walked round the village, bought some milk in the post office stores, and went in the small 400 year old church. A cloudy day with sunny periods.

Sunday 22nd May 1995

From Semington Top Lock No 16 to Sells Green Bridge arriving at 11:50 am. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 3.88 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.95 lock/miles per hour. Got out the bike for Beryl to ride up the Seend locks and for me to do the three swing bridges. Moored and had lunch at the Three Magpies, Dad paid. I went into Devizes on the bike for shopping but the pedal broke off near the to of the locks. Luckily I soon found a cycle repair shop where a new pedal was fixed (£4) while I went shopping. Saw the lock keeper (Bob) at the bottom lock as I came back and he told me that Dawn and Dusk were booked through the locks tomorrow, they passed us later. A mostly sunny and warm day.

From Devizes Bottom Lock No 22 to Devizes Top Lock No 50 arriving at 2:15 pm. The time taken was 5 hours. 2.00 miles and 28 locks, averaging 6.00 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 208 hours 42 minutes total cruising time, 377.50 miles and 355 locks, averaging 3.51 lock/miles per hour over the whole voyage.

Went up the locks with "Lamia", brested up most of the way. There was a young couple with a baby on the boat and they were most impressed with Dad's performance in helping with all the locks. Progress up the locks was delayed by one of the pipes for the back pumping scheme having been dropped (or pushed) into a lock. We also got stuck in the top lock but were not mch delayed by this. Had a late lunch then Beryl and I went shopping while Dad and Mum visited the canal museum. A day that started cloudy but soon gave way to a misty and increasingly hot sun.

Stopped for lunch moored to two barges above lock 62 as we could not find any moorings above the lock. A morning of sunshine and showers, some of them heavy. Could not get any water at Wootton Rivers Bottom Lock as the tap had been moved and ha not yet been reconnected. The Lock Keeper said that we could get water at Crofton Lock 60 but we did not see any there.

A morning of more sunshine than clouds as we followed down the locks. Passed two wide boats, "Hanna" and "Rachel", from the Bruce Trust carrying disabled people. At Hungerford Church swing bridge we nearly lost a windlass when Beryl threw it ashore and it slipped down into the water, luckily I was able to reach down and fish it out. Moored by the town bridge for lunch and went shopping in town. The afternoon was more cloudy than the morning.

Saturday 28th May 1995

At Newbury Lock No 85

Moved down from our moorings above the swing bridge and lock to moorings opposite Newbury wharf. Looked round the town and had lunch before filling with water at the boat yard. Mayflys still around this morning, we saw a lot yesterday evening.

Went down the locks with a Kennet Cruises Boat "Rosina Emma" the steerer of which was the most morose man I have ever met on a narrowboat, although his family seemed quite nice. Followed "Dawn" and "Dusk" again. Stopped for an early lunch just below the swing bridge, hoping to shake off our cheerless companion.

From Ufton Swing Bridge to High Bridge, Reading arriving at 6:00 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 30 minutes. 8.75 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.72 lock/miles per hour. Filled up with water at Tyle Mill where "Dawn" and "Dusk" had stopped for lunch, the owner (Mike) took the rope and was quite chatty as we filled up. At the next lock we caught up with "Rosina Emma" again the man in no better humour after his lunch. We managed to lose them after Garston Lock, which we went through with another boat. On leaving County Lock we colided with a tree that was in the river just by the traffic light button, the boat tipped and we tore the cratch canvas and scratch a bit more of the side. Moored by the prison. A day of cloud, sunny periods and a couple of short showers.

The moorings outside Tesco's were either too shallow or already occupied so I turned the boat before the lock, unexpectedly finding myself in front of a very large barge. We moored by the junction and had lunch before going shopping in Tesco's. A mostly rainy day with some sunny intervals mostly in the morning.
