Lower Avon Navigation

Fladbury Lock deepened by three feet.

Stratford upon Avon Canal

Warwickshire County Council decide to apply for the abandonment of the southern section of the canal.

River Class Boats

These British Waterways Authority narrowboats date from 1959 and were also known as blue tops.

Ashton Canal

Excluded from British Waterways cruising licence.

Stourbridge Canal

IWA Midlands Branch attempt a "canal busting" cruise through the neglected canal.

Stratford upon Avon Canal

Over six-thousand formal objections were lodged concerning Warwickshire County Councils plans to close the canal.

Lower Avon Navigation

From Evesham to Tewksbury formally reopened on 10 June.

The main line of the waterway was closed by Acts of 1954 and 1962.

Stourbridge Canal

IWA National Rally held at Stourbridge to draw attention to the poor state of the canal.

Stratford upon Avon Canal

1963

Caldon Branch - Trent and Mersey Canal

A public meeting at Leek, on the 18 February, was followed by the setting up of the Caldon Canal Committtee.

River Great Ouse

Legislation enabled the River Authority to licence boats and charge fees, at last providing money for navigation to a body mainly concerned with drainage.

Grand Union Paddington Branch

IWA National Rally at Little Venice.

Norfolk and Suffolk Broads

Promoted by Acts.

Sankey Brook Navigation

Abandoned.

Upper Avon

An Inland Waterways Association member offers 80,000 to help restore navigation.

1964

Dudley Canal Line No 1

Dudley Canal Tunnel Preservation Society formed on 1 January, and provided boat trips through the tunnel.

Derby Canal

Abandoned.

Stourbridge Canal

In July an agreement was reached between the British Waterways Board and the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal Society to restore the sixteen locks using voluntary labour.

Stratford upon Avon Canal

Official reopening of the southern section on 11 July.

Upper Avon

IWA National Rally at Stratford-upon-Avon.

1965

Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal

Abandoned.

Leeds and Liverpool Canal

IWA National Rally at Blackburn.

Norfolk and Suffolk Broads

The Broads by E A Ellis , Published by Collins.

Shrewsbury Canal

First moves made to re-open the canal and the Newport Branch.

Upper Avon

The Upper Avon Navigation Trust was incorporated on 26 August.

1966

Manchester Ship Canal

The original access to the Bridgewater canal, via Bridgewater Locks, was closed.

Peak Forest Canal

IWA National Rally at Marple.

River Thames

Small Boat on the Thames by Roger Pilkington, Published by Macmillan Publishers (UK) Ltd.

1967

Avon Tar Barge

The Avon tar barges worked over the Avon section of the Kennet and Avon, under sail until the First World War. Traffic began during the late 1860s and ended in 1967.

Grand Union Leicester Section
