Norfolk and Suffolk Broads

1924

Leeds and Liverpool Canal

A W Stansfeld

He retired as general manager and engineer but was retained as consultant.

Lower Avon Navigation

Was in the hands of the Perrotts of Craycombe, Fladbury until 1924 when William Fisher took over and formed the Lower Avon Navigation Company.

Louth Navigation

Closed by a warrant of the Minister of Transport on 8 August 1924.

1925

River Thames

London River by H M Tomlinson, Published by Cassell - Docklands as they were with an account of a voyage from Limehouse to Gravesend.

1926

Leeds and Liverpool Canal

Robert Davidson

He was appointed Engineer and General Manager.

River Thames

River Thames by F V Morley, Published by Methuen London Ltd.

Wisbech Canal

Abandoned.

1927

River Avon (Bristol)

The Bristol Avon by Ernest Walls, Published by Arrowsmith - Rivers of England series. Includes drawings.

Thames and Severn Canal

Abandoned by orders of 1927 and 1933.

River Thames

Sunbury Lock - new lock was completed.

Severn Tankers

These all-steel barges started to operate, mainly at Stourport, Worcester and Gloucester.

Aylsham Navigation

Abandoned.

Hackney Canal

Traffic ceased.

Swansea Canal

Abandoned by a series of Acts from 1928 to 1962.

River Trent

Frank Rayner

He resigned as engineer due to ill-health and was given a seat on the board and was appointed consulting engineer.

Grand Junction Canal

Became part of the Grand Union on 1 January 1929.

River Gipping

The Ipswich & Stowmarket Navigation Co. was wound up.

Grosvenor Canal

Subject to major reconstruction.

Grand Union Canal

Formed in the years 1929 and 1932 by the amalgamation of many old canals.

Tamar Manure Navigation

Ceased to be navigable.

There was traffic on the river until 1929.

Norfolk and Suffolk Broads

The Norfolk Broads by W A Dutt, (4th edition 407 pages) Published by Methuen London Ltd - The book is in two parts the first, being on the broads and rivers, is written by Dutt but the second part, on various broadland topics, is by local writers.

River Tyne

The River Tyne, Its Trade & Facilities. An Official Handbook... by R W Johnson & R Aughton, Published by Andrew Reid - This illustrated handbook was issued by the Tyne Improvement Commission.

River Nene

H W Clark

Was responsible for rebuilding locks and sluices on the river and building a new lock and weir at Dog-in-a-Doublet.

Royalty Class Boats

Boats of the GUCC fleet of the 1930s, launched to coincide with a programme of widening, dredging and modernisation on the line of the canal, between London and Birmingham. They were named after kings and queens and only six were constructed.

River Cam

Photographs taken between the 1930s and 50s published by Cambridgeshire Libraries Publications in 1996 in the book Along the Cam and the Great Ouse with Briscoe Snelson.

River Great Ouse

The locks from Brownshill to Eaton Scocon were rebuilt in the 1930s when this part of the river was restored by the newly formed Great Ouse Catchment Board.

The Grand Union Canal Company embarked on a major modernisation scheme.
