Our Canal Population

By George Smith, first edition published.

Bridgewater Canal

Sir Edward Leader Williams

Having rejected a trial of a steam tug hauled on a chain or cable on the bottom of the canal that was set up by Fowler of Leeds, he now ordered 6 narrow-beam tugs. Eventually he had 28 of these.

Glamorganshire Canal

Richard Hassard

Did a survey for a new dock in Cardiff which would be connected to the Great Western Railway.

Romford Canal

Authorised by an Act, work started on a lock and a tunnel under the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway line.

Trent and Mersey Canal

Anderton Lift opened. Connecting the Trent & Mersey Canal with the River Weaver this boat lift raised boats 50 feet from the river.

River Thames

River Weaver

Sir Edward Leader Williams

As engineer for the Bridgewater Navigation Company he suggested using the Delamere dock entrance as a means of connecting traffic from the Bridgewater Canal at Runcorn directly to the Weaver but the Weaver trustees rejected the idea.

Sir John Coode

Wrote a report proposing a new lock at Naburn to be 140 foot by 32 foot and the purchase of a dredger at a cost of 40,000.

Was made General Manager, in addition to his post as engineer, and was paid 1,500 per annum.

The last boats came to Horncastle.

Abandoned by an Act.

River Mersey

Sleaford Navigation

Act of abandonment passed.

River Thames

A New Map of the River Thames, From Thames Head to London (on scale of two inches to a mile) from entirely new surveys finished during the summer of 1878,and corrected to the Present Time by H Taunt, Published by Taunt & Co.

He attended a Trent shareholders meeting to explain his system of hauling boats by a wire rope on the bed of the river.

Edwin Muir

He engineered major construction works following major subsidence problems. This work was to continue until 1888.

Closed, but much of it navigable until the 1940s.

Estimated a cost of 45,000 for the Winterburn reservior which was to hold 284 million gallons of water.
