Aire and Calder Navigation and River Aire

Proposed the Leeds Extension Canal from Leeds to Armley mills.

Gloucester & Sharpness Ship Canal

He commissioned a survey which found it was practicable to build a railway bridge across the Severn to the company's docks at Sharpness.

The Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal and the Monmouthshire Canal amalgamated.

He said that Runcorn Docks were crowded and that the London & North Western Railway were building a high level branch to within 13 miles of Winsford at great expense. This would allow salt to be transported at less cost than on the Weaver. He also pointed out that some of the largest Winsford works already had railway connections and that others were getting them.

Wimbledon & Wandsworth Canal project

He estimated the cost of the scheme at 53,000 for a 2 mile and 3 furlongs canal with 2 locks from Wandsworth Basin running paralell to the River Wandle to near Plough Lane , Wimbledon. The scheme also included a new road for part of the route.

He produced a plan for making the river navigable to seagoing vessels with a minimum river depth of 12 feet and 15 feet over the lock sills, the enlargement of the Weston Canal and a new lock at Sutton. The new locks were to be 200 feet long and 40 feet wide with three pairs of hydraulic powered gates. He estimated the cost as 195,800 for the river up to Northwich.

Consulted by the trustees of the river and recommended the extension of Naburn Lock to 136 feet at the cost of 5,250.

The Thames to Solent by Canal and Sea,

Voyage by J B Dashwood through the Wey & Arun Junction canal to the sea at Littlehampton shortly before the canal was closed. Published as a book the following year.

Bradford Canal

Coombe Hill Canal

He was asked to report on the canal and concluded that it could not be made to cover its expenses and would be better turned in to an osier bed.

The Waterway to London, as explored in the "Wanderer"

By H A Schofield Published by Simpkin, Marshall. The title continues "with Sail, Paddle & Oar, in a voyage on the Mersey, Perry, Severn, & Thames, & Several Canals" includes travelling the Berkely, Bridgewater, Ellesmere, Stroudwater and Thames & Severn.

Gloucester & Sharpness Ship Canal

He reported on the overcrowding of Sharpness Docks and on the inadequacies of a canal and docks built for sailing ships now the age of steam had arrived. He suggested a new entrance, tidal basin and docks below Sharpness at a cost of 150,000.

An Act was passed, based on proposals he made together with Leader Williams, to build a weir in the western channel to divert more water to the eastern or Glocester channel of the river..

An Act was passed based on his and W B Clegram's proposals for a weir in the western channel to improve flows in the eastern channel to Gloucester and for a lock at Llanthony.

Oxford Canal (Southern Section)

Fenny Compton Tunnel was opened out. The name remains and its site can be recognised by the straight stretch of narrow canal in a cutting crossed by several bridges.

He designed the Anderton Boat Lift about this time.

He told a sub-connittee how a hyrdraulic boat lift at Anderton, costing no more than 12,000, would work.

1871

He was paid 1,000 plus 220 for the cost of models in exchange for the right to use his compartment boat patents.

Reported to the Ouse trustees that regular dredging was required below Naburn Lock.

He was appointed to the Board of the tramway company building a line down the Ceiriog valley to join the canal at near Chirk.

1872

Huddersfield Broad Canal

Arranged with Sir John Ramsden for enlarged carrying trade premises at the Huddersfield wharf.

River Severn

He joined the Board of the Severn Bridge Company that was to build a railway bridge across the river above Sharpness.

River Weaver

He bcame engineer to the Weaver trustees. He started a programme of lock and river improvements.

Bridgewater Canal

Having left the Weaver Navigation he became engineer and general manager of the new Bridgewater Navigation Company.

Lancaster Canal

He died still with the company after 60 years service.

1873

Shropshire Union - Llangollen Canal

He suggested the canal from Llangollen and the Weston Branch could be converted into a narrow-gauge railway and extended to Wem.

Trewyddfa Canal

Bought by the Great Western Railway in 1873 at the same time as they acquired the Swansea Canal.

Tavistock Canal

Closed.

Upper Avon

The last barge is said to have navigated this part of the river in 1873.
