Las Vegas

Las Vegas, the name is Spanish for "The Meadows", had no population at all when Nevada became a state in 1864. By 1931, when Nevada legalised gambling, there was only a small town with about 5,000 people engaged in ranching and working on the railroad. Since then this huge city based on gambling has grown up in the desert.

Right: The Mirage has attractive gardens and waterfalls outside but being Las Vegas they become a volcanic eruption each hour.

Above: The Oasis like the Mirage is situated on the Strip, a road into the desert in the 1940's but now surrounded by the city.
