The Canyon de Chelly National Monument

The Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Arizona, is in the Navajo Tribal land as was established in 1931 with the approval of the Navajo Tribal Council. As well as the Canyon de Chelly itself the monument also encompasses the Canyon Del Muerto. Although visitors are free to explore the rims of the canyons most other areas are closed to them except when accompanied by a Navajo guide or Park Ranger. This is because of the religious and historic importance of the area.
