Verona and Pisa

Verona was our first stop on this trip but unfortunately the weather was mostly overcast for our visit. In the afternoon we went on to Pisa, which we explored the next day.

Right: The Piazza delle Erbe one of the most picturesque squares in Italy containing many historic buildings.

Left: Walking in the centre of Verona near the Town Hall and Amphitheatre.

Right: Verona's Amphitheatre or Arena built in the reign of Diocletion, about 290 AD, is still used for performances, including operas.

Pisa

Left: The Cathedral - Duomo - can be seen best from the Leaning Tower.

Above: The Piazza del Duomo or square of miracles seen here from the Leaning Tower.

Right: The bell on the Leaning Tower, a campanile built between 1173 and 1350.

Above: At the other end of the Piazza del Duomo is the Baptistery with the Campo Santo behind.

Right: The Leaning Tower pictured here before it was closed for several years to stabilise its foundations. The structure started to lean while it was being built and the builders tried to correct this when building the subsequent floors - from the 3rd floor up. This did not solve the problem and the lean became worse before remaining fairly stable for about 500 years. By the time we visited it was accepted that major engineering would be necessary to prevent its collapse.
