Venice

Venice (Venezia) is a city built on 118 small islands with around 100 canals, the principal one being the wide Grand Canal. The present site of the city was established in 452 AD when local people moved from the mainland to the islands for defensive purposes. Today, under the constant threat of rising water levels, it remains a unique and beautiful city.

Above: The 324 foot-high Bell Tower, or Campanile of St. Marks, was built in its present form in the 16th Century but collapsed in 1902 and was rebuilt again by 1912.

The British canals are very different to those in Venice and are far longer in length. If you have an interest in seeing what the UK navigable rivers and canals have to offer there are hundreds of pages of information on my Waterways Information web site at www.jim-shead.co.uk.
