Pompeii and Herculaneum

When Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD Pompeii and Herculaneum were covered with a layer of ashes and pumice-stone 20 feet deep. In the 18th century excavation of the ruins was begun but it was only from the early twentieth century that efforts were made to preserve the buildings.
