Assisi

Assisi is an ancient city of Umbria where St Francis was born in 1182 and where he founded the Franciscan order of monks. His disciple, St Clare, founded the Poor Clares and died in 1253 but her mummified body can still be seen below the church of Santa Chiara in the town.

Left: Assisi, like many Italian towns, stands on the top of a hill surrounded by olive trees.

Above: The Basilica of St Francis, a two-story church, seen here from the upper level.

Left: The Basilica di San Francesco, or Basilica of St Francis, seen from the lower level.

Right: The ancient Temple of Minerva, perhaps as early as 1st century, is now the church of Santa Maria della Minerva.
